Then Coach Jin explained the essentials of Taekwondo and personally demonstrated the kicking techniques. After a while, Coach Jin looked at Haoshuai and said, "Haoshuai, come out and demonstrate a high kick and break a wooden board for everyone." Haoshuai stood up, bowed to Coach Jin, then bowed to the other students before stepping forward. He took a deep breath and shouted as he executed a high kick. "Good! Do another one!" I couldn't help but shout and clap, but I inadvertently noticed that the apprentices around me were looking at me with strange expressions. I suddenly felt like I wanted to find a hole to hide in, feeling particularly embarrassed as I lowered my raised hand and shrank to the side. "Alright, did everyone see the key points of Haoshuai's kick? You need to snap your leg out instead of kicking stiffly," Coach Jin continued while picking up a square wooden board from the side. I immediately fixed my eyes on the board in Coach Jin's hand, not even daring to blink, eagerly anticipating this moment of witnessing a miracle.
"Crack!" A crisp sound echoed as the board was broken by Haoshuai's kick. Then Haoshuai bowed to Coach Jin and deeply bowed to the apprentices before sitting back down next to me. I really didn't expect that practicing Taekwondo also required such politeness, along with repeated bowing practice. "Haoshuai, does your foot hurt?" I asked him softly. After hearing this, Haoshuai smiled and shook his head, "It doesn't hurt. It might hurt at first, but after practicing it won't hurt anymore." I instantly felt the charm of Taekwondo; I had made up my mind! I definitely wanted to learn Taekwondo! This class passed quickly and ended before I knew it. After coming out of the Taekwondo hall, Haoshuai told me that Coach Jin is Korean but has great respect for and loves our Chinese culture and customs. That's why he has settled in China, married a Chinese wife, and plans to have his son join Chinese nationality when he grows up so that he can be a true Chinese person.
After returning home, I told my parents about this. They exchanged glances before my dad shrugged and said to me, "Looks like we need to hold a family meeting." Soon after, the three of us sat down at the table. However, our table was rectangular; my parents sat at one end while I sat at the other end, which reminded me of how Police Uncle interrogated suspects on TV. "What’s going on here? You're not a basketball player; why do you want to learn Taekwondo? Are you planning a rebellion because we nagged you?" My dad bombarded me with questions. I quickly raised my hand to refute him and said, "N-no, father! First of all, I have no intention of rebelling; I just want to learn more during summer vacation, that's all." I responded to him. "Jie, you finally have a summer vacation, but after nearly a month of playing Street Basketball, you still want to learn Taekwondo?" My mom chimed in too; it seemed like they had conspired together against me. "Hey! Dad and Mom, practicing Taekwondo can strengthen your body! It can also help defend against wolves...I mean prevent thugs from causing trouble or harassing you."
"Really? You never thought about fighting or becoming a bully at school?" My dad asked with a strange smile. I scratched my head and muttered softly, "Well... that does sound appealing..." "What!" My dad immediately scolded me. I laughed and said, "Hey hey! I'm just joking! Oh come on! Dad and Mom, I'll only practice for one month; is that okay?" I quickly switched tactics and started acting cute towards them. My mom said to me, "Sit properly; be serious for a moment. How much is the tuition for one month?" Finally reaching the crucial point; it seemed they were still concerned about the tuition amount. I cleared my throat twice and said, "Well... it only costs a little bit." My parents leaned forward as much as they could: "So... how much is 'a little bit'?" With fearful eyes looking at them, I whispered, "Six hundred..." "What! Six hundred!" My parents exclaimed in unison; I really didn't expect their reaction to be this big.
"Actually six hundred isn't too much..." I mumbled with my head down. My dad slammed the table: "So it's cheap! I thought it would cost thousands or eight hundred; who knew it only costs six hundred? That's not bad." After hearing this, I almost fell off my chair; so that's what Dad meant! "Hehe! So you agree then?" I smiled as I stood up and walked over to them. However, Dad raised his hand in front of me signaling me to stand at attention: "Stop! Who agreed? Think about it overnight; I'll give you an answer tomorrow morning. During this time you must behave." After finishing his words, Dad stood up and walked away with his hands behind his back. My mom came over to me: "Son, why did you suddenly want to learn Taekwondo?" I scratched my head honestly: "I ran into a classmate on the road today who practices Taekwondo. I watched one of their classes and thought it was really cool and charming; that's why I'm interested..." My mom looked down at me: "So how much do you think you can learn in one month?" After considering her question for a moment, I suddenly raised my head: "Yellow belt!"
The next morning after getting out of bed and brushing my teeth and washing my face, I went to the dining table where soy milk and fried dough sticks were waiting for me. Underneath the bowl of soy milk were several bills pressed down; when opened up there were exactly six hundred yuan. Mom and Dad are truly wonderful; they even prepared my tuition for me! After finishing breakfast with those six bills in hand, I left home heading straight for the Taekwondo hall. Once inside, I rushed over handing over cash: "Coach Jin! I'm here to sign up!" Coach Jin was instructing the apprentices on their movements when he saw me; he raised his hand signaling me to wait a moment while he finished up. After class ended, Coach Jin walked over beside me: "Xiang Jie, let's handle your registration."
"Okay!" Excitedly running over there filled with anticipation about becoming part of martial artists made me particularly thrilled; soon I'd be able to be like Haoshuai—a chivalrous youth standing up for justice at school! If I learned Taekwondo well this time around when encountering those three local bullies again I'd be able to show them what I'm capable of!
