During the summer vacation, Mrs. Wu often felt a bit downcast because the handsome landlord, Wang Xin, had gone home. Her husband, Mr. Wu, had been working late frequently, leaving her alone at home every evening to entertain the children, which only added to her boredom and low spirits.
As the summer vacation was coming to an end, this weekend Mr. Wu's company organized an outing for employees and their families. Mrs. Wu and their two children were also invited, which lifted her mood considerably.
On Saturday morning, Mr. Wu's colleagues gathered at their home, turning the Wu family household into a lively hub of activity as they noisily organized personnel, vehicles, and equipment. Once everything was arranged, they filed downstairs to board the cars and prepare for departure.
Mr. Wu and Mrs. Wu stayed behind to lock the door when suddenly they heard a familiar voice call out, "Mr. Wu, heading out?"
Before Mrs. Wu even turned around to look, her heart raced and her stomach felt both soft and tight; her cheeks flushed with warmth. It turned out that Wang Xin had returned early.
"Yes, we're going to Jiufeng Mountain for a barbecue," Mr. Wu replied politely. "Would you like to join us?"
"No, thank you," Wang Xin said, lifting two large bags in his hands. "I have a lot of things to sort out."
Mr. Wu waved goodbye and went downstairs with Mrs. Wu.
Wang Xin stood at the top of the stairs watching them descend when he heard footsteps approaching again. Mrs. Wu must have made some excuse to her husband because she hurried back up.
Wang Xin smiled as he watched her rush up; she dashed over and showered him with kisses like a rainstorm. Wang Xin seemed unfazed by it all, while she was left breathless and flustered.
"You naughty boy, you actually came back..." She buried her face in Wang Xin's embrace before looking up at him and saying, "Don't run off; wait for me tonight."
Wang Xin set down his bags and playfully touched her all over before teasingly saying, "Why wait until tonight? Come now."
"Oh..." Mrs. Wu felt tingly from his touches. "Um... I can't... Everyone is waiting for me downstairs... Tonight... Hmm..."
Knowing it wasn't the right time, Wang Xin let her go after giving her another kiss. Reluctantly, Mrs. Wu turned and went back downstairs while Wang Xin headed up to his room.
When Mrs. Wu reached the front door and got into her husband's car, everyone cheered loudly as they set off in a grand procession.
They chose the coastal highway for their route; along the way, the weather was beautiful with birds singing and flowers blooming under a blue sky dotted with white clouds. The road was bustling with traffic; it was crowded and difficult to move forward until they finally arrived at the Jiufeng Mountain Youth Activity Center just before noon.
Everyone got out of the cars to stretch their limbs before splitting into groups to collect ingredients like vegetables, meat, sauces, pots, pans, charcoal grills, and nets. They then made their way into the windbreak forest to start cooking.
The Wu family was grouped with the general manager's family. The general manager's wife had started to show signs of middle-aged weight gain but remained beautiful with a strong feminine charm. She brought along her twin sons who were seventeen or eighteen years old and had just finished their college entrance exams; they looked vibrant and full of energy.
Also in their group were two unmarried female employees—one an accountant and the other the general manager's secretary—who had brought her boyfriend along as well, making their group quite lively.
As soon as the general manager arrived, he busied himself greeting everyone in different groups while Mr. Wu took charge of starting the fire. The twin brothers helped by adding charcoal and meat while the secretary and her boyfriend entertained the Wu family's children. The other ladies sat around the grill chatting away but weren't much help in cooking.
