The forward with the ball, A Fei, first took two steps back and then quickly broke through. A Fei closely defended him, following his movements. Suddenly, he dribbled the ball between his legs to his left hand and then stepped back to take a mid-range jump shot. Under A Fei's interference, he missed, and the ball bounced off the rim. The rebound was grabbed by Lu Yinghao, who passed it to Ouyang. Ouyang quickly turned around and initiated a fast break, running straight toward the backcourt. A Fei and I followed suit. Ouyang started his drive from a 45-degree angle toward the basket, smoothly bypassing the opposing shooting guard and forward before taking three steps for a layup. The opposing Power Forward stood in front, reaching out to interfere but hit Ouyang's arm instead. With his arm shaking violently, Ouyang lost control of the ball. The referee blew the whistle, calling a blocking foul on the opposing Power Forward. Ouyang would go to the free-throw line for two shots. It seems that fouling has always been a drawback for big men in the paint, along with their poor long-range shooting percentage. No wonder there is a "Hack-a-Shaq" strategy specifically targeting Shaquille O'Neal in the NBA.
Ouyang stepped up to the free-throw line and calmly sank both shots. We led by one point. After the opposing team inbounded the ball, their forward sprinted to the frontcourt while dribbling between his legs to maintain control. Suddenly, he stepped back and jumped to shoot. A Fei leaped high and slapped at the ball, but the opposing forward reacted quickly, spinning his arm around to pass behind his back to the shooting guard. The shooting guard jumped directly for a three-pointer from the 45-degree angle but missed. The opposing Center grabbed the rebound and passed it back outside. I dashed over and intercepted the ball just before their point guard could catch it. "RK, watch your defense!" shouted that forward at their point guard. Oh? So that guy's name is RK; is that a nickname or an English name? He quickly positioned himself in front of me, disrupting my intended fast break strategy. His somewhat diminutive and slender frame had its advantages: speed and agility—just like when we faced the Horsemen Team on the Street Basketball court; we relied on our agility to win.
In the first quarter of the game, we felt a sense of crisis for the first time this semester; the pressure was intense, especially from their high-IQ forward and point guard RK. Their cooperation caused us significant trouble, along with their twin towers in the paint and outside shooting... We were struggling but not falling behind; we remained neck-and-neck. At the end of the first quarter, we were tied at 55 points each. After leaving the court, Teacher Qiu calmly said, "Team members, don't rush; take your time. Yuce's players are all very talented professionals with a clear playing style—soft on the outside but tough on the inside. We need to gradually penetrate their defense and strengthen our defensive end to wear them down. I've noticed that their interior defense is too aggressive, so we can draw fouls from their Center..." Teacher Qiu immediately arranged a new strategy for us. I took a sip of water and shook my head vigorously to wake myself up.
"Xiang Jie, you are a national champion Point Guard in Street Basketball; how can you let this little opponent pressure you so much? You can't! Absolutely not!" The more I thought about it, the more excited I became, so I gulped down two more sips of water. Unintentionally looking up, I saw their point guard also watching me; our eyes met for an instant before we both awkwardly looked away at the same time. I noticed A Fei smiling at me. "Why are you looking at me so flirtatiously? Haven't you seen such a handsome guy before?" I joked with him. A Fei laughed: "Yeah, I've never seen someone as ugly as you! Jie, Yuce's point guard is quite skilled; you need to be careful." "And what about their forward? Isn't he just as tough? You should worry about yourself first," I patted his shoulder and stood up. That Slim and Tall player was also an undiscovered expert; thinking back to how they showed us admiration when we arrived was almost ironic for our trio.
After stepping onto the court again, we began our journey in the second quarter. After their inbound pass, their point guard charged into our three-point line area. I shadowed him closely until he reached the free-throw line position where he passed behind him to their forward. Slim and Tall received the ball and quickly jumped for a layup after faking out A Fei and Li Kanglin successfully putting it in the basket. After quickly inbounding again, I ran to the top of the arc outside of three-point range and took a shot—swish! After they inbounded again for a fast break, their point guard drove straight into our paint area while I raised my arms to defend him; unexpectedly, he spun like a mouse under my arm and jumped for a layup with agility like that of a fish! I quickly turned around and leaped up to swat at his shot from behind—smack! I blocked his shot right off his fingertips! The ball bounced into Ouyang's hands as we launched another counterattack; while running, Ouyang passed it to me perfectly as I faced Slim and Tall using my Lingbo Microstep move to spin past him for another layup.
A block followed by a fast break—a seamless transition! Excitedly, I ran over to celebrate with A Fei and Ouyang with chest bumps after scoring one three-pointer and one layup! It had been ages since we played so freely! The point guard and Slim and Tall stood together watching us; their height difference made them look particularly comical side by side. I smiled knowingly at them—if these two warriors could join my Yulin High School team, how great would that be? A Fei and I could play more easily while maintaining better stamina and condition during games! In this second quarter, we gradually regained our former dominance as Li Kanglin and Lu Yinghao also found their rhythm; by halftime we had drawn three fouls from their Center (four total), taking back our lead advantage as well! At halftime we led 54-49; during this time our classmates quieted down significantly—the gym was no longer so noisy—but it cannot be denied that Yuce's strength is far superior to Leap High School's; we needed to focus on our game now.
