Yue Hui was a person who excelled at conversation, possessing high emotional intelligence and a graceful manner of speaking. With her around, there was never a dull moment, while Jiang Chen mostly listened quietly.
Forty minutes later, lunch was ready, and everyone gathered to eat. Jiang Chen's Grandpa Gan claimed he wasn't feeling well and couldn't eat, choosing to stay hidden in his study.
"How about we bring some food to Dad?" Zhou Baojia asked softly.
"Forget it. That's just how he is. He still won't lower his pride. I want to see how long he can hold out. Let's not worry about him; we’ll enjoy our meal," Jiang Chen's Guan Waipo sighed and waved her hand dismissively.
Zhou Rongli remained silent, her feelings complicated. However, she had her own stubborn side; her dignity could be slightly trampled once, twice, or even three times, but not a fourth or fifth time.
In truth, family ties were strong; Zhou Rongli was soft-hearted. If only her brothers would soften their stance a little, she wouldn't hold grudges anymore. Unfortunately, they remained obstinate.
After lunch, according to tradition, Jiang Chen's family was supposed to leave for home. However, this year was different because Jiang Chen was present, so they naturally stayed longer. Under Guan Waipo's strong insistence, Zhou Rongli had no choice but to agree to spend the night in Hangcheng.
Zhou Rongli understood that the old lady wanted to create an opportunity for family relationships to improve. As the saying goes in Huaxia, "A harmonious family brings prosperity." Although the old lady didn’t express it openly, she was clear about her intentions.
"Tonight, stay at home; don’t go to a hotel," the old lady said firmly.
"Alright... if it makes you happy, Mom," Zhou Rongli replied helplessly.
"Grandma, I want to stay outside. The hotel we stayed at two years ago was nice and not far from here, right by West Lake," Jiang Lu said quietly.
"Xiao Lu, there are plenty of rooms at home; why would you want to stay outside?" Guan Waipo replied with dissatisfaction.
"I'm afraid someone will make me sleep on the floor," Jiang Lu said, recalling how her cousin had treated her coldly during her first visit to the Zhou family and even suggested that Jiang Lu sleep on the floor in her room because she thought Jiang Lu was unclean.
"What are you talking about? You’re at Guan Waipo’s house; how could anyone make you sleep on the floor? Tonight Zhou Duanmei and the Lianhua family aren’t staying here; there are enough rooms," Guan Waipo reassured her.
Jiang Lu frowned, feeling reluctant but unable to argue against it.
Seeing her daughter's gloomy expression, Zhou Rongli smiled and said, "Mom, since my brothers are coming back tonight and there won’t be enough space at home, how about this? I’ll stay with you tonight for company while Xiao Chen and Xiao Lu can go stay at a nearby hotel since it’s close."
"Alright then," the old lady agreed after some thought.
"But tonight we all need to have dinner together. There are some matters we need to resolve; we can't keep this stalemate going," she added.
"Mom, we’ll do as you say," Zhou Rongli replied with a smile.
"Mr. Jiang, I’ll book that hotel for you; you can go directly there tonight," Yue Hui offered.
Jiang Chen nodded in acknowledgment.
"By the way, Mr. Jiang, since you're staying tonight and tomorrow is the third day of the new year, there's an auction in Hangcheng. Would you like to check it out? There might be some artifacts that interest you," Yue Hui continued.
"Then let’s go take a look," Jiang Chen agreed without hesitation. After all, he was staying in Hangcheng to accompany his godmother's family; taking them to the auction would be just fine.
