I didn't linger on the high-rise; their screams abruptly ceased as I ended the call. There was no need to witness that bloody scene to understand their grim fate. Following my planned route, I hurried towards the modified SUV parked two blocks away.
Once inside the driver's seat, I retrieved a semi-automatic pistol and placed it on the passenger seat, then took out a military knife and secured it at my waist. This time, I was no longer the lamb waiting to be slaughtered.
I started the engine and drove away from this city on the brink of hell. My first safe point was an abandoned observation station in the suburbs. This place had been largely ignored in my previous life; its elevated terrain made it easy to defend and hard to attack, making it an ideal temporary refuge.
Suddenly, a shadow slammed against my windshield, thick blood streaming down the glass. It was a newly infected zombie, its eyes still reflecting fear and despair. With a blank expression, I activated the windshield wipers to clear away the blood.
The road conditions were worse than expected. Frayed power lines lay scattered across the road, overturned cars blocked the main thoroughfare, and panicked pedestrians were everywhere. I was forced to veer into a narrow alley.
"Help! Please give me a ride!" A blood-soaked middle-aged man suddenly lunged at my window, leaving bloody fingerprints on the glass. I slowed down, meeting his desperate gaze.
In my past life, I might have felt sympathy, but now I understood that in the early days of the apocalypse, the greatest danger wasn't the zombies but humanity itself.
"I'm sorry," I said softly before slamming on the gas.
In my rearview mirror, I saw him collapse to his knees as three zombies lunged at him from the alleyway. I gritted my teeth and noticed five or six zombies moving toward me from up ahead.
After navigating through several side streets, I finally returned to my planned route. In the distance, an overpass had collapsed, black smoke rising from the city center as explosions echoed in succession far away. The city was crumbling, and this was just day one of the apocalypse.
The vehicle bumped along the mountain road, and the number of zombies had noticeably decreased. The metal fence of the observation station was rusted but structurally intact. I used the prepared key to unlock the gate, drove the car into the yard, and quickly got out to lock the gate behind me.
The interior of the observation station was even more dilapidated than I had imagined. Almost all the windows on the first floor were broken, but the observation room on the second floor was surprisingly well-preserved. I took out wooden boards and tools from my storage space and began reinforcing the doors and windows on the first floor. As dusk fell, distant explosions and screams echoed from the direction of the city; the real challenge lay ahead.
At dawn, I got up, had a quick bite to eat, and decided to venture out to gather supplies. Although the observation station was safe, resources were limited, especially medicine and fuel, which needed to be replenished as soon as possible. I tucked a dagger at my waist, concealed my handgun inside my coat, and slung what appeared to be an ordinary backpack over my shoulder before quietly leaving the observation station.
The small town at the foot of the mountain should have what I needed. As I reached halfway up the slope, I heard intermittent shouting in the distance. I immediately crouched down and hid behind a large rock to observe. Five people were stumbling up the mountain, pursued by seven or eight zombies. Upon closer inspection, I recognized that the leader was Li Hu.
They were clearly exhausted; one young girl fell to the ground while a middle-aged woman screamed in terror. I didn't want to get involved at first, but seeing that zombies were closing in, I cursed under my breath and leaped out from behind the rock, quickly aiming at the three zombies in front and firing three shots.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" The silencer muffled the gunfire, and the zombies fell to the ground in response.
"Come here!" I shouted at them in a low voice, "Don't make a sound!" The remaining zombies were attracted by the gunshots and charged toward me. I calmly shot them one by one until the last one collapsed just three meters away from me.
"Miss Su!" Li Hu's eyes widened in disbelief. "It's really you!"
I nodded coldly.
"Thank you for saving my life!" Li Hu stepped forward excitedly. "You saved me in the city last time, and today..."
"Keep your voice down," I interrupted him, glancing around warily. "Making too much noise will attract more zombies."
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
Li Hu immediately lowered his voice, his eyes filled with pleading. "Miss Su, we haven't found a safe place for three days, and we're running out of water and food. I see you're well-equipped; could you take us in for a while? We're just ordinary people without any special skills, but we can help with chores, stand guard—anything you need!"
I didn't respond right away but carefully examined each of them: two middle-aged women, a young girl, and an elderly man who looked to be in his fifties. Their eyes were weary but still honest, and there were no obvious injuries on them.
Experience from my past life told me that one person's strength is ultimately limited. Even with spatial abilities, moving further in this apocalyptic world still requires the power of a team.
"I can take you to a safe place," I finally said, my tone cold, "but you must follow my orders."
Li Hu quickly nodded. "We'll listen to Sister Su!"
The others echoed their agreement, their eyes filled with the hope of survival.
"Follow me."
I led them toward the observation station, carefully avoiding areas that might harbor zombies along the way. Upon reaching the station, I opened the door for them and then, in front of everyone, retrieved several weapons and some food from my spatial ring.
"This... this is..." Li Hu stammered.
"Spatial ability," I replied briefly, then demonstrated a few combat techniques, dispatching a suddenly appearing zombie in just a few moves. "I have the ability to protect everyone, but you must obey my commands."
"Absolutely!" Li Hu said immediately, and the others nodded in agreement, their eyes filled with awe.
I assigned them simple tasks: reinforcing defenses, organizing supplies, and clearing the surrounding area. Watching them busy at work eased my mind slightly. With these extra hands, my plans could progress more quickly.
As I observed their respectful and grateful gazes, an odd feeling surged within me. In my past life, I had also formed a team but was ultimately betrayed under the instigation of Zhang Hao and Lin Mengyi.
In this life, I would not make the same mistake again.
"Remember," I said to everyone, "there is no eternal kindness in this apocalypse—only eternal survival. If you follow me, you must learn to grow strong."
