Exams always seem to come slower than expected for students, yet faster than they actually do. So when the associate professor of auditing announced before class ended that there would be a midterm next week, everyone let out a collective "Wow," feigning surprise.
The professor, accustomed to such reactions, showed no sign of concern and simply packed his bag and left.
"What are we going to do?" Meng Zhu asked the girl next to her. "This subject is so difficult. Do you have any notes?"
"My notes are a mess," the girl replied. "I'm afraid I won't even understand them myself."
"What should we do...?" Meng Zhu turned to the front row and asked, "Yao Yao, you must have taken notes!"
"Yes!" Yao Yao said. "But I don't know if they'll be helpful."
"Let me copy them," Meng Zhu rushed over. "I'll read them first."
"Can't you just take your own notes?" Bai Lan from the front row said coldly. "Why borrow from everywhere? Cough cough..."
Meng Zhu and Yao Yao exchanged glances; Yao Yao smiled shyly, and once Bai Lan had left her seat, Meng Zhu made a face at her back and whispered, "Pretentious! Coughing monster!"
Bai Lan had caught a cold recently and couldn't stop coughing.
The girl who had been sitting next to Meng Zhu came over and said, "Don't mind her; she's a good student... Oh, by the way, I heard from some classmates in other courses that our professor has been in a bad mood lately. I wonder if he'll intentionally make the questions harder..."
"Ah! Don't scare me!" Yao Yao said anxiously.
"Really!" the girl insisted. "They say he and his wife are immigrating, but after she got to America, she said she wanted a divorce..."
"No, they say they've already divorced..." another person chimed in.
Such gossip piqued the girls' interest, and they quickly forgot about the exam, animatedly exchanging information, inevitably embellishing stories and creating drama.
"Alright! Alright!" Bao Qiang finally interjected after listening for a while. "It's time for lunch; eat quickly so we can get back to studying."
"Are you treating us?" the girl asked.
"Uh," Bao Qiang hesitated for a moment, then changed the subject. "The weather is really nice today."
"You have no sincerity at all," the girl replied. "Stop sticking to your girlfriend; we're good classmates too! You should hang out with us sometimes..."
Bao Qiang glanced awkwardly at Meng Zhu and Yao Yao before hastily packing his bag. Quick-witted Meng Zhu suggested, "Alright, let's all eat together! We can copy the notes for everyone while we're at it."
She directed this last sentence at Yao Yao, who nodded in agreement.
Everyone grabbed their bags and headed to the cafeteria near the school for a hasty meal. Not usually one to make an effort, Meng Zhu took the initiative to photocopy her notes and distributed them to everyone before they scattered off to study frantically.
Meng Zhu caught hold of Yao Yao's arm. "Yao Yao, I have an idea..."
She shared her thoughts with Yao Yao, who listened, occasionally shaking her head and then nodding. When Meng Zhu finished speaking, she asked, "Is that okay?"
"Is it really alright?" Yao Yao hesitated; Meng Zhu had suggested visiting the associate professor.
"Come on! Come on!" Meng Zhu replied, "I promise it will be fine."
"But... but..." Yao Yao said, "Why do I have to go with you?"
"Oh dear!" Meng Zhu linked arms with her. "You took notes, and you can ask questions more effectively..."
"But... but..." Yao Yao still felt uneasy.
"It's fine," Meng Zhu urged, pulling her along. "Let's go! It's getting dark, and it looks like it's going to rain. We should hurry."
