The sky was dark, heavy clouds looming overhead, and the air felt stifling. Yao Yao, who had always been indecisive, was being dragged along by Meng Zhu, who coaxed and persuaded her to the staff dormitory next to the school.
"I think it's this one," Meng Zhu said as she jumped up the steps and pressed the doorbell.
"Maybe we shouldn't..." Yao Yao hesitated, wanting to back out.
"Come on!" Meng Zhu pressed the button again.
"If we do this... the teacher might get upset..." Yao Yao frowned.
"She won't," Meng Zhu pressed it a third time.
"It looks like it's going to rain... maybe we should..." Yao Yao searched for an excuse.
"Who is it?" But it was too late; the door swung open. "Oh, you two..."
"Teacher!" Meng Zhu beamed with a charming and radiant smile.
"Are you looking for me?" The associate professor was dressed in a tank top, chewing on something.
"Teacher," Meng Zhu said, pulling Yao Yao's hand. "Sorry to interrupt your meal. We were just discussing a couple of things from class that we didn't understand, and we couldn't come to a conclusion. Could we ask you a few questions?"
Meng Zhu spoke as if it were entirely genuine, making it hard for the professor to refuse. After scratching his ear, he said, "Alright... please come in!"
Meng Zhu's first tactic had succeeded. She exchanged a knowing glance with Yao Yao, and together they followed the professor into the room, hand in hand.
"Sorry," the professor said as they walked in. "It’s a bit messy in here..."
Kiki... Meng Zhu and Yao Yao couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Messy? It was an absolute disaster. The dormitory was already old, but upon entering, there was an unmistakable odor unique to single men. By the door lay a chaotic pile of shoes and socks; in the living room, clothes and miscellaneous items were strewn everywhere. The television and computer screens were both on, while the sofa was cluttered with books, bottles, and dishes. The table was covered in papers and stationery, with only a small space left for a bowl of instant noodles that was steaming hot.
"You’re having this for lunch? Teacher," Meng Zhu asked while she and Yao Yao looked around in disbelief at the state of the place.
"Hehe..." The professor could only chuckle awkwardly, unsure of what to do.
"Oh," Meng Zhu said, "you should continue eating; we'll ask our questions later."
"Um... this..." The professor seemed dazed, completely different from his authoritative self in class.
"Go ahead and eat," Meng Zhu urged as she held Yao Yao's hand. "Yao Yao, come on..."
They headed towards the kitchen. The professor sat down again to continue his noodles but kept glancing nervously towards the kitchen. From there came faint sounds of water running and clattering noises. Soon after, Yao Yao emerged carrying a plastic basket to gather up the scattered dishes.
"Um... well..." The associate professor felt quite embarrassed and was about to say something.
"Just eat your noodles, teacher." Meng Zhu also came out, carrying a larger basket.
The associate professor, like a child in kindergarten, obediently picked up his noodles and silently slurped them as if he had done something wrong.
Yao Yao took the basket back to the kitchen, while Meng Zhu squatted down beside the sofa, tossing her sweat-soaked clothes into the basket one by one.
As the associate professor ate his noodles, he watched Meng Zhu. She was focused on tidying up and didn't even glance at him. He blinked, feeling a pang of sadness in his heart.
Meng Zhu squatted there, her slender waist and cute little hips forming a beautiful curve. The associate professor stared at this vibrant student, somewhat dazed.
"Eat your noodles, silly," Meng Zhu said.
