Bai Lan couldn't help but cough a couple of times. Gritting her teeth, she pulled her shirt to cover her body. Meng Zhu stopped laughing at her and knelt down to help her take off her shoes and socks. She then picked up a hairdryer, found an outlet, and squatted behind Bai Lan to dry her hair.
The warm air blew over Bai Lan's cold strands, and the two fell silent until Meng Zhu had completely dried her hair. Suddenly, Bai Lan coughed again, and this time it wouldn't stop. Meng Zhu gently patted her back, but Bai Lan waved her hand to indicate she was fine.
Meng Zhu got off the bed, casually buttoned up two buttons, grabbed the pile of wet clothes from the floor, and quietly left the room. After a while, she returned with a cup of warm water in hand.
"The teacher just happened to have some Kant. Do you want to take it?" Meng Zhu opened her palm to reveal a capsule.
Bai Lan nodded, took it, and swallowed it down with a sip of water. Meng Zhu sat down next to Bai Lan and kept looking at her face.
"Where's Yao Yao?" Bai Lan asked.
"Still tidying up the kitchen," Meng Zhu replied. "Honestly, Bai Lan, you're very beautiful."
Bai Lan blushed again and turned her eyes toward the window.
"The rain has stopped..." Meng Zhu said as she also looked outside. "Come on!"
Meng Zhu pulled Bai Lan up and opened the window. They knelt side by side on the bed, resting their elbows on the windowsill. Outside was a tiny garden surrounded by dense bougainvillea, still quite messy.
"Mm... the air is so nice," Meng Zhu said.
"Bai Lan," she continued, "I'm sorry..."
"What for?" Meng Zhu asked.
Bai Lan shook her head and didn't say anything more. Meng Zhu rolled her eyes at her and playfully slapped her on the backside.
Bai Lan gasped as she remembered she was only wearing nearly transparent underwear while Meng Zhu wasn't even wearing pants. They were both perched there looking out the window, their backsides in the air as they laughed together.
"We rarely talk, huh..." Meng Zhu said.
"Mm."
"Uh, do you have a boyfriend?" Meng Zhu suddenly asked.
"..." Bai Lan thought of Bao Qiang and felt her face heat up. "Why are you asking that?"
"Do you have one or not?"
Bai Lan found herself momentarily speechless. Did she have a boyfriend? Bao Qiang didn't seem like one in the traditional sense, but saying no felt a bit embarrassing too.
"Not really!" Bai Lan looked back into the distance.
"Not really?" Meng Zhu pondered, "How strange..."
"What’s strange?"
"This beautiful girl, are you hesitating or is the other party hesitating?"
"You’re talking nonsense..."
"I'm not talking nonsense..." Meng Zhu leaned her head on Bai Lan's shoulder.
"..." Bai Lan said, "Hey, don’t do that..."
"What’s wrong with that?" Meng Zhu replied, "Is it wrong to lean a little?"
"That’s not it... I didn’t mean that... I meant..." Bai Lan said, "Please stop!"
"I haven’t done anything!"
"Don’t touch me!"
"I’m not touching you!" Meng Zhu shook her hands, "My hands are right here!"
Bai Lan suspiciously turned her head and noticed a fuzzy black shadow moving around behind the curve of her hips, aside from the apple green color of her underwear.
"Ah..." Bai Lan suddenly gasped.
"Ah..." Meng Zhu also saw the thing. She reached for the hairdryer by the bed and deftly aimed it at the shadow. The black figure was thrown out of bed and landed on the floor; it turned out to be a large spider, about the size of half a palm. Meng Zhu leaned over the edge of the bed, picked up a shoe, and with a loud "smack," she crushed the spider into a bloody mess.
"Uh... uh..." Bai Lan trembled in fear, "It... it... it bit me..."
