"Junior greets Senior Quan!" As he bowed, he also comforted Xiao Hei.
"It’s been many years! I haven’t spoken in ages, and today finally someone who can talk has come to keep this old man company for a drink," Quan said, waving his hand. A table made of water appeared before them, with two cups on it filled with a blood-red liquid that emitted a fragrant aroma. Ignoring Mo Wen, Quan sat down at the table, lifted his cup, and drank the liquid in one gulp.
"Then Junior shall not be rude," Mo Wen thought. Since this water being wanted him to drink with him, it seemed there was no escaping it. He steeled himself and walked to the table, lifting his cup and downing the liquid in one go before placing the cup back on the table with a bow.
"Haha! An interesting young man, let’s have another!" Quan waved his sleeve, and two cups filled with a light green liquid appeared. He raised his cup and drank it down first. Mo Wen stepped forward again and also drank from his cup. Since he had already committed, whether it was one cup or two didn’t matter. He had initially planned to isolate the liquid in his stomach, but once ingested, it permeated and vanished without a trace. However, he felt no unusual effects. Thinking about how Quan could effortlessly eliminate a Demon Beast stronger than himself, he reasoned that if Quan wanted to harm him, there was no need for such elaborate measures. With that thought, his anxiety eased.
"You seem to have many questions for this old man," Quan said as he leaned on the table with one hand propping up his chin, watching Mo Wen finish his second cup.
"Junior indeed has some doubts to ask Senior…" Mo Wen began, but was interrupted by Quan waving his hand.
"This old man won’t tell you," Quan replied bluntly.
"May I ask why?" Mo Wen was taken aback by Quan's response.
"Because this old man doesn’t know," Quan straightened up and shrugged. "However, I can tell you a story about myself."
"Then Junior will listen attentively." Since he had been brought here against his will, and seeing Quan's demeanor, it was clear that whether he wanted to or not, the story would be told. He might as well go along with it.
"This old man does not feed on humans; you can sit down. Standing so far away is clearly disrespectful," Quan said while playing with his cup and glancing at Mo Wen. Two pillows appeared in front of the table along with a basin that seemed prepared for Xiao Hei. Realizing that not sitting down would be disrespectful to Quan, Mo Wen took a seat.
"This story begins with this old man following an unreliable master..." Once Mo Wen and Xiao Hei were seated, Quan waved his sleeve again, filling the cups and basin with purple liquid. He drank from his cup and began telling his tale.
Perhaps it had truly been a long time since anyone had spoken to him; as he drank and spoke, two days passed in an instant before Quan prepared to conclude his story. While listening, Mo Wen organized the valuable information he gathered: the water source on the island was a magical artifact; Quan was a spirit of that artifact placed here by his master to provide water for the Demon Beasts. He felt like the basin before Xiao Hei—he had been surrounded by these Demon Beasts since awakening but had no idea how long he had been there. Because of uncertainty about how much longer he would remain in this place, he took great care of what he considered home; any Demon Beasts fighting nearby would be dealt with by him.
"Senior mentioned earlier that Junior possesses something you need; may I ask what it is?" Finally finishing his story, Quan revealed that he had never left this island—strictly speaking, he hadn’t left this inlet—and knew nothing of the outside world. His tale was solely about him and the Demon Beasts; however, Mo Wen was most curious about Quan's master, which only received a brief mention from Quan.
