The marble floor gleamed like a mirror, and the perfect combination of wood and copper accents silently showcased immense wealth. The atmosphere was surprisingly quiet, devoid of the usual hustle and bustle found in ordinary hospitals. The people coming and going were either impeccably dressed medical staff or patients and family members who exuded an air of affluence.
Su Yao approached the front desk, where a meticulously made-up nurse stood.
"Excuse me, which room is Miss Lin Yue in?" Su Yao asked politely.
Upon hearing her question, the nurse's expression instantly brightened. "You must be Miss Su Yao!"
Su Yao was taken aback; she hadn't expected to be recognized.
"Miss Lin is in the VIP ward on the top floor." The nurse handed Su Yao a gold-edged card. "This is your pass; the elevator goes directly there."
Su Yao accepted the card with a light smile, realizing that Jiang Rou must have informed them in advance.
Inside the elevator, the gilded decor complemented the wooden panels beautifully, while soft Bach violin music flowed gently from hidden speakers. Su Yao's heartbeat quickened as the elevator ascended.
Twenty-eighth floor, twenty-ninth floor, thirtieth floor...
She was about to see Lin Yue, the one who had captivated her thoughts and prompted her to travel such a long distance to meet.
The elevator doors slid open silently, and Su Yao took a deep breath before stepping out. The luxurious corridor was spacious and empty, with carpets so thick it felt like stepping into a cloud.
Valuable oil paintings adorned the walls, each a masterpiece by renowned artists.
Su Yao unconsciously quickened her pace. She hurried toward Lin Yue's room at the end of the corridor. Through the semi-transparent glass door, she caught sight of Lin Yue immediately.
Dressed in a custom-made milky white silk hospital gown, Lin Yue lay with her eyes closed, resembling an exquisite and fragile ice sculpture on the wide medical bed. Despite her illness, she maintained an elegance befitting a lady from a prestigious family.
Lu Chen sat on a nearby sofa, speaking softly, but Lin Yue kept her eyes shut, seemingly lost in her own world, indifferent to her surroundings.
The luxurious room was larger than a presidential suite in a five-star hotel. Besides the medical bed, it featured a lounge area, a meeting space, and even a small dining area. Not far from the floor-to-ceiling windows was a private terrace surrounded by greenery, offering an excellent view.
Su Yao gently pushed open the door and stepped inside slowly. Lu Chen seemed to notice the movement and looked up immediately.
When he saw Su Yao at the door, surprise flickered in his eyes before joy and relief washed over his face.
Su Yao quickly raised her finger to her lips in a "shh" gesture. Lu Chen understood instantly and smiled while nodding.
Su Yao tiptoed to the bedside and leaned down carefully to tuck Lin Yue’s blanket snugly around her. The room was filled with a subtle fragrance of incense that couldn't quite mask Su Yao's unique gardenia scent.
As if sensing this familiar aroma, Lin Yue's brow twitched slightly before she suddenly opened her eyes wide. Upon seeing Su Yao standing by her bedside, her dark eyes widened in disbelief as if she could hardly believe what she was seeing.
"Su Yao?" The voice was barely a whisper, as if she were confirming whether she was dreaming.
Su Yao said nothing, simply bending down to gently embrace Lin Yue. Her arms carefully wrapped around Lin Yue's shoulders, afraid of hurting this person who seemed even more fragile than she remembered.
At that moment, all words felt inadequate; only this embrace could convey the tumult of emotions within her—longing, worry, heartache, and the determination to see her despite the miles that lay between them.
Lin Yue was initially stunned but then reached out her arms, tightly returning Su Yao's embrace, holding her as if trying to merge their bodies together.
"Why did you come...?" Her voice was so soft it was almost inaudible.
Seeing this, Lu Chen discreetly stood up and left the hospital room, gently closing the door behind him to stand guard outside. The luxurious room had excellent soundproofing. He glanced at his phone, thinking that Jiang Rou likely wouldn't arrive for a while, giving them some time alone.
The embrace lingered for a long time, neither willing to let go first.
"I'm sorry I couldn't come sooner..." Su Yao whispered in Lin Yue's ear. "I was so worried about you."
Her fingers gently brushed through Lin Yue's hair.
Reluctantly, they parted. Su Yao sat sideways on the edge of the bed, cradling Lin Yue's face in her hands and carefully examining her haggard features.
Lin Yue's cheeks had thinned out, her eyes were sunken, and her lips had lost their color. Yet to Su Yao, it was still the most beautiful face in the world.
Su Yao's gaze fell on Lin Yue's hand wrapped in bandages, and her heart tightened.
"What happened to your hand?" She lightly brushed over the pristine white bandage, her eyes filled with concern.
Lin Yue moved her fingers slightly and gently clenched her fist.
"It's nothing; I just broke a wine glass." Her tone was unnaturally calm.
At that moment, Su Yao inadvertently caught sight of the scars on Lin Yue's wrist.
Several marks of varying depths were clearly visible on her fair wrist—jagged and shocking. Usually concealed by a watch or jewelry, now in a hospital gown, Lin Yue had no such cover; those scars lay bare for all to see.
Realizing Su Yao's gaze was fixed on them, Lin Yue hurriedly tried to hide her arm under the blanket.
But Su Yao grasped her hand firmly and leaned down to place gentle kisses on each scar.
Lin Yue trembled all over, feeling somewhat at a loss. The scars on her wrist had only ever been seen by family, Jiang Rou, and Lu Chen. They were like marks of past pain—each one a testament to her despair.
Now, Su Yao's kisses seemed to say: These pains are acknowledged; these scars are accepted.
For so long, she had grown accustomed to hiding her vulnerable side, playing the role of the indomitable Lin heir in front of others. But now, facing Su Yao, she could shed all pretense and reveal her true self without fear of judgment or pity.
Lin Yue stared blankly at Su Yao; her eyes felt warm with unshed tears while the corners of her lips lifted slightly.
"I've been trying to call you; I couldn't get through," Lin Yue grasped Su Yao's hand tightly as if afraid she would suddenly vanish. "I thought something happened to you..."
"Fool, that's because I was on the plane," Su Yao said with a gentle smile, her thumb lightly brushing against the dark circles under Lin Yue's eyes.
Lin Yue suddenly remembered something and frowned. "Did Lu Chen tell you I was here?"
Su Yao shook her head, her gaze drifting for a moment before she finally spoke the truth. "It wasn't Lu Chen... it was Jiang Rou who told me."
"Jiang Rou?" Lin Yue couldn't believe her ears. "How is that possible?"
How could the very person who was determined to obstruct them, Jiang Rou, voluntarily inform Su Yao of her whereabouts?
Su Yao gathered her hair. "Jiang Rou arranged for me to take Zhang Zihao's private plane here."
Lin Yue's expression changed abruptly, a name escaping her lips. "Zhang Zihao?"
Her voice dropped to almost a whisper. "So you came with Zhang Zihao?"
The unease and suspicion hidden in the question were clear to Su Yao. She nodded, not intending to hide it. "Yes, I came with him." Seeing Lin Yue's face grow even darker, she quickly added, "After I arrived at the hospital, he went back to the hotel."
Lin Yue's gaze dimmed further, her expression shifting from shock to confusion, and finally to vigilance.
"So not only did you fly together, but you're also staying at the same hotel?" She asked knowingly, her tone laced with jealousy.
"Lin Yue..." Su Yao couldn't help but laugh softly, pinching Lin Yue's slightly puffed cheek. "What are you thinking?"
Lin Yue turned her face away, pouting slightly. "Where are you staying?"
"The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills."
Upon hearing this, Lin Yue realized that it was her family's hotel. She became even more convinced that everything was arranged by Jiang Rou.
Worriedly, she asked, "Why did Jiang Rou arrange for you to come to America?"
"She wanted to talk to me in person; she came to find me right after I got off the plane," Su Yao said softly, gently tucking a stray hair behind Lin Yue's ear.
"What did you talk about? Did she threaten you?" Concern filled Lin Yue's eyes.
Su Yao gazed at Lin Yue with warmth in her eyes. "She didn't threaten me; she just told me about your situation and shared some of your stories."
Leaning closer to Lin Yue until their foreheads touched, she whispered, "What she said doesn't matter to me; what matters is that you're here in front of me—alive and real, someone I can touch and kiss."
As she spoke, Su Yao cupped Lin Yue's face and gently kissed her lips.
The kiss was both a comfort and an expression of longing.
Lin Yue closed her eyes, lost in the kiss, yet the doubts in her heart lingered like dark clouds that wouldn't disperse. The photo Jiang Rou had shown her—of Su Yao and Zhang Zihao standing together in front of an apartment door looking intimate—kept flashing through her mind.
When Su Yao pulled away from the kiss, Lin Yue lowered her head, unable to hide the bitterness in her voice. "What... what is your relationship with Zhang Zihao?"
Su Yao paused for a moment before lifting Lin Yue's face, forcing her to meet her gaze.
"Fool, you don't think I've gotten together with Zhang Zihao, do you?"
Lin Yue gazed steadily into Su Yao's clear eyes, which reflected her own image and unreserved affection.
"If I were with him, why would I come all the way to America to see you?"
"What about you two..."
"We have nothing between us," Su Yao interrupted her. "We're not even friends."
"He pursued me, but I don't like him at all. It's that simple."
"My coming to America with him was purely because it was the condition for seeing you... I would do anything just to be with you."
Lin Yue stared blankly at Su Yao, her unease and suspicion completely dispelled. She opened her arms and pulled Su Yao into an embrace, whispering in her ear, "I miss you so much, every day, every moment, I'm thinking of you..."
Su Yao hugged Lin Yue back, feeling the warmth of her embrace. "I feel the same way; I'm thinking of you every minute, every second..."
Just as they were immersed in the joy of their reunion, a gentle knock came from outside the door.
Lu Chen poked his head in, looking apologetic. "Sorry to interrupt... The nurse needs to take Lin Yue for an examination."
After they separated, Lin Yue pouted and looked at the nurse outside the door. "Do we have to go now? Can we delay it a bit?"
"Sorry, Miss Lin, this is the doctor's order," the nurse explained with a smile. "The examination will be quick; you'll be back soon."
"Afterward, the kitchen will prepare lunch for both of you," she added. "Today's chef is from a Michelin three-star restaurant."
Su Yao gave Lin Yue a reassuring smile and gently patted her hand. "Go ahead; I'll wait for you to come back."
Lu Chen pushed the wheelchair over and was about to help Lin Yue when she stubbornly sat up by herself and awkwardly moved into the chair.
Lin Yue didn't want Su Yao to see her vulnerable side, but that action only made her weakness more apparent.
Once seated in the wheelchair, Lin Yue immediately reached out and held Su Yao's hand tightly. "Come with me."
It wasn't a request but a playful command.
"Okay, I'll go with you." Su Yao immediately clasped her hand back.
On their way to the examination room, Lin Yue held onto Su Yao's hand tightly, completely unconcerned about the gazes of others.
Occasionally, medical staff passed by in the corridor and respectfully nodded at Lin Yue, clearly aware of this special patient's identity. However, when they saw Lin Yue holding another beautiful woman's hand so tightly, their eyes couldn't help but flash with surprise and curiosity. They knew that Lin Yue had a close relationship with Jiang Rou, the daughter of the hospital owner—a well-known "secret." But now, Lin Yue was holding hands with someone who was clearly not Jiang Rou in plain sight. This scene was bound to become the number one gossip in the hospital for weeks to come.
