I thought about it and decided that pretending to have sprained my ankle was the safer option.
I leaned against the wall, waiting for him to come closer, limping as I moved forward.
Just as he was about to catch up with me, my stomach let out an embarrassing growl.
Oh no!
Ma Tao stopped in his tracks and looked at me coldly. "You..."
I forced a smile. "I haven't eaten."
After a moment of silence, he walked past me and pressed the button for the elevator to go downstairs.
I hurried after him. "Um, I've been waiting for you for several hours."
He didn't stop.
The elevator doors closed.
I stood there watching his car drive out of the underground parking lot.
Ran Ran called me. "How did it go?"
"He looked at me with so much hatred."
"It's okay, we still have a chance," Ran Ran reassured me. "We can play hard to get."
"How do we play hard to get?"
"You need to interact with him a few times, then disappear for a few days. After that, find an excuse to get close to him again.
Basically, you need to mess with his mind."
"Oh." I understood.
The next day, I entered the company under the identity of Secretary Ma Tao.
First, I reported to the HR department and was then taken to the secretary's office.
Ma Tao was not there.
I sat at my desk and waited for a while until he returned.
As he walked past me, he glanced over and recognized me.
However, he did not stop and went straight into his office.
After sitting for a while, I picked up some documents and went in. "Mr. Ma, here’s today’s schedule."
He took the folder and placed it on the desk. "Got it."
"Um..."
He looked up at me. "Is there anything else?"
"Nothing." I turned and left.
After sitting at my desk and thinking for a moment, I got up to pour myself a cup of coffee and went back in.
This time, I played it smart and deliberately spilled coffee on my hand.
"Ouch!" I exclaimed, "That burned!"
Ma Tao looked up and saw me frantically wiping the table.
He got up and walked over to me, pulling me out of the office.
“Mr. Ma?” I looked at him in confusion.
He led me to the restroom in the lounge and turned on the faucet to wash my hands.
His hands were beautiful—long and strong.
The skin was very fair, with veins clearly visible.
My heart raced.
He was so handsome!
What if I held such lovely hands...
No, no!
I couldn’t think like that!
I took a deep breath to suppress the fluttering in my chest. “Alright, alright, it’s fine now.”
He released my hand and leisurely took a paper towel to dry off the water.
Then he tossed me a towel. “You don’t need to handle this kind of thing; let the secretary take care of it.”
I wiped my hands. “I’m perfectly fine being your secretary.”
He glanced at me, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips. “You’re not trained for this; let professionals do professional work.
I think you have a decent image; you could work in the public relations department.”
“Really?”
I was transferred to the public relations department.
I felt demoted, a heavy weight settling in my heart.
I called Ran Ran to vent, and she said, "It's okay, we still have opportunities. As the saying goes, the ones closest to the water tower get the moon first."
"Let's hold our ground for now and see how things unfold."
I was utterly dejected.
Life in the Public Relations Department was tough.
Perhaps it was because I lacked work experience; my colleagues treated me like a gopher.
Running errands like buying meals, fetching coffee, cleaning the restroom, delivering documents... I did it all.
And so, six days passed.
On the seventh day, I received some dreadful news.
Ma Tao was rumored to be involved with a popular young actress.
As a member of the Public Relations Department and also the ex-girlfriend of the person involved, there was no way for me to avoid this situation.
Working alongside the PR manager to handle this matter left me feeling completely numb.
