"But things are different now."
"You are already a publicly listed company, and I am about to become a pauper."
"If you marry me, will that improve our situation?"
I opened my mouth, unsure of what to say.
So he knew everything?
I hugged him tightly. "I'm sorry."
He patted my shoulder. "It's okay."
I sniffled. "From now on, I will take good care of you."
He smiled. "Sounds good."
Then we went to get our marriage certificate.
After leaving the civil affairs bureau, Ma Tao took my hand. "Yu Lixuan, you are now my legal wife."
"Mm." I nodded.
He grinned and said, "Then I will be your bandit husband from now on."
I paused for a moment. "What do you mean?"
He pointed to the distant office building. "Look, your scrap recycling company is just like a bandit stronghold, isn't it?"
"And I am the husband you captured!"
Ma Tao is such a scoundrel!
That dog of a man!
That bastard!
I angrily cursed at him.
Yet he laughed happily, "Yu Lixuan, I’m very glad you’re willing to marry me."
"I'm glad too," I replied.
Ma Tao took my hand and led me home.
Once we got home, a thought suddenly struck me.
Wasn't the reason I broke up with Ma Tao in the first place because his family was wealthy?
Now his family has gone bankrupt.
Thinking of this, I felt a surge of joy and pulled out my phone to post on social media: "Congratulations to me! I'm getting married!"
As soon as I posted it, I received a comment from Ran Ran: "Who are you marrying?"
"Ma Tao," I replied to her.
Ran Ran was shocked: "Didn’t you say his family was wealthy?"
"They went bankrupt," I replied.
Ran Ran was even more astonished: "How is that possible?"
"It’s true," I responded. "He has nothing now."
After a moment of silence, Ran Ran asked, "Does that mean I can pursue him now?"
I remained silent.
Seeing my lack of response, she assumed I was feeling guilty: "Are you feeling guilty?"
"No," I replied. "I just think we’re not suitable for each other anymore."
Ran Ran disagreed: "What’s unsuitable about it?"
The truth was, I knew Ma Tao hadn’t changed his feelings.
He just thought I had.
That’s why he kept rejecting me.
But now, things were different.
He had lost everything.
Two months later, Ma Tao's company encountered financial problems.
They needed over thirty million to resolve the issue.
At that moment, Madam Ma approached him.
"Son, are you really willing to give up everything for her?" Madam Ma asked.
Ma Tao clenched his fists. "Mom! I've made my decision!"
Madam Ma snorted coldly. "Do you even know what you're doing?"
Ma Tao nodded. "I know!"
Madam Ma sighed. "Alright, I understand."
Then she turned and walked away.
Ma Tao watched her retreating figure. "Mom."
Madam Ma turned back to him. "Son, remember! This is your own choice!"
With that, she got into her car and drove off.
I stood at a distance, watching this scene unfold, feeling a pang of heartache.
After all, it was because of me that Ma Tao had become this way.
He walked over and took my hand. "Let's go."
"Okay." I followed him into the company.
Inside the office, Ma Tao was sitting on the sofa, looking at me. "Yu Lixuan, my mom just came to see me."
"I know," I nodded.
Ma Tao clenched his fists. "Do you think I'm useless?"
"No," I shook my head.
Ma Tao let out a bitter laugh. "Actually, my mom is right."
"I have nothing left now."
"If it weren't for you being willing to marry me, I would have been done for a long time ago."
I hugged him tightly. "Ma Tao, don't say that."
He pushed me away. "Yu Lixuan, tell me the truth! Do you think I'm useless?"
"No," I shook my head again.
