I looked at the note left by Xie Yutong in my hand, which contained only a few short words: "Precious resources, abandoned factory."
This woman was truly mysterious, like she was meeting with an underground party. Couldn't she be a bit clearer?
Precious resources?
What kind of precious resources? Gold? Diamonds? Or maybe a dozen bottles of soda? In this world, even toilet paper might be considered a precious resource!
An abandoned factory?
Which abandoned factory? There are at least eighty abandoned factories in this city; does she think I'm some kind of treasure hunter?
I felt like I was playing a large-scale escape room game, and not just any game, but one with an outrageous difficulty level, where the clues were scarce and the NPCs went offline at critical moments.
"Wei Na," Zhong Dali asked in a deep voice, like a bear that hadn't eaten for three days, "what... should we do now?"
To go or not to go?
That was a question worth a bag of spicy snacks.
As for Xie Yutong, who knows what tricks she had up her sleeve? What if it was a trap? Wouldn't we become sitting ducks?
But then again, if we didn't go and missed out on some treasure, like a warehouse full of instant noodles, I would regret it so much that I'd be pounding my chest and unable to sleep at night!
Sigh, this is really making me lose my hair!
Forget it, let's take the plunge!
Fortune favors the bold. If I really find the treasure Xie Yutong mentioned, maybe I could live a life of luxury in this apocalypse!
"Let's go to the abandoned factory." I gritted my teeth and said decisively, as if preparing to blow up a bunker.
Death is inevitable, so I might as well take a gamble. What if it works out?
"Alright!" Zhong Dali exclaimed, rubbing his hands together excitedly, as if he could already see a warehouse full of treasures beckoning to him.
This kid truly fears nothing; I bet he could munch on a chicken leg without flinching even if Mount Tai were to collapse before him.
"However," I quickly added, worried that he might stir up some trouble, "we... need to... be careful."
Xie Yutong is no pushover. If she has any malicious intentions up her sleeve, we could be in serious trouble.
I must tread carefully and proceed step by step to survive in this perilous post-apocalyptic world!
"Mm-hmm!" Zhong Dali nodded repeatedly, though I couldn't tell if he was really paying attention.
I glanced around the environment and decided to split up. After all, there’s strength in numbers, and we could look out for each other.
"Zhong Dali," I pointed to a rickety pile of iron frames on the west side of the factory and said, "you... go... over there... and scout around to see if anything seems off."
"Got it!" Zhong Dali agreed without hesitation, turning and sprinting toward the west like a wild dog unleashed, disappearing from my sight in an instant.
Watching Zhong Dali's retreating figure, I silently prayed that he wouldn’t get us into trouble!
Taking a deep breath, I headed toward the abandoned factory.
Along the way, I encountered quite a few zombies. These shambling corpses lunged at me, emitting a nauseating stench of decay.
However, they were easily dealt with, thanks to my "Soul-Eating Immunity Evolution," which granted me the means to survive in this apocalypse.
I sliced through them like cutting watermelons; with swift movements, zombies fell one after another until I cleared a path to the factory entrance.
Before long, I stood before the gates of the abandoned factory.
The factory looked like it had been abandoned for a long time. The main gate was rusted and the paint had long since peeled away, revealing patches of corroded iron beneath.
Everywhere I looked, there were crumbling walls and overgrown weeds, creating a scene of desolation that could easily be mistaken for a horror movie set.
I cautiously pushed open the factory door, which creaked loudly in protest as if it resented my intrusion.
Inside, it was eerily quiet; not a sound could be heard. The silence was so profound that it sent chills down my spine, making me feel as though something was lurking in the shadows, watching me.
It was... too quiet!
The stillness was unsettling, and I could even hear my own heartbeat echoing in my ears.
Just then, a deafening crash broke the silence.
"Boom!"
The sound came from deep within the factory, resembling an explosion.
What had happened?
Could it be that troublemaker, Zhong Dali?
My heart raced as I hurried toward the source of the noise, fearing that he had stirred up another mess.
As I ventured deeper into the factory, I found Zhong Dali engaged in a fierce battle with a horde of zombies. The scene was chaotic.
This guy really knew how to attract trouble!
He swung a rusty steel pipe wildly, darting left and right like a madman, occasionally letting out a roar—whether to rally himself or intimidate the zombies, I couldn't tell.
There were indeed quite a few zombies surrounding him, closing in like a pack of hungry wolves eyeing their prey.
I quickly joined the battle, wielding my weapon as I dodged left and right, finally carving a bloody path to reach Zhong Dali's side.
“Zhong Dali,” I shouted, evading the attacks of the zombies while questioning him loudly, “Are you… okay? What on earth is going on? Why are there so many zombies?”
“I’m fine!” Zhong Dali exclaimed excitedly, seemingly oblivious to the danger surrounding him. “Wei Na, look how amazing I am! I took down dozens of zombies all by myself!”
This guy really had no sense of danger; even in such a dire situation, he was still showing off.
“Impressive my ass!” I cursed, kicking away a zombie that lunged at him. “You… almost… got me killed! How did you attract so many zombies?”
“Hehe!” Zhong Dali scratched his head and chuckled sheepishly. “I… I accidentally knocked over an oil drum. It made quite a noise…”
Hearing this nearly made me spit blood; this guy was truly more trouble than he was worth!
Just then, I noticed a mysterious girl huddled in a corner, trembling and looking pitiful.
She appeared to be around seventeen or eighteen years old, with a rather innocent look. Her long black hair fell over her shoulders, and her big eyes were filled with fear.
What was going on here?
Could it be… she was also being chased by zombies?
I hurried over to her, wanting to ask about her situation.
“Are you… okay?” I asked with concern, trying to make my tone sound as gentle as possible.
The girl looked up at me timidly, her eyes brimming with tears.
“I… I’m scared…” Her voice trembled as if she might burst into tears at any moment.
This girl was indeed very timid, but it was understandable; in this apocalyptic world, it was normal for a young girl to be terrified when facing so many zombies alone.
"Don't... be afraid," I comforted, patting her shoulder. "I... am... here!"
I looked at the girl, feeling a surge of pity in my heart. This apocalyptic world is truly cruel, even such a small child...
Just then, I suddenly heard footsteps approaching, growing clearer and closer.
Someone is coming!
I quickly became alert, gripping my weapon tightly and preparing for battle.
Who... is it?
Could it... be... an enemy?
I held my weapon firmly, ready for whatever might come.
The footsteps drew nearer.
What... should I do?
