"The esteemed guest is too kind. Our shop has its own methods for identifying guests' Realm. It seems this is your first visit to our Extreme Goods Pavilion. If you come often, you'll find that this is merely a small trick, not worth mentioning," the attendant explained as he led Mo Wen further inside. In truth, Mo Wen was already aware of this; he had researched the matter during his time here and discovered that there were indeed many ways to discern another's Realm without them noticing. However, these methods often came at a considerable cost, which suggested that the Extreme Goods Pavilion had some real power.
Mo Wen had only attended two auctions before this one, the previous one held in a square by Huo Lou. Following the attendant into the auction hall, he found that it did not have the rumored private booths. Instead, tables were arranged on three sides of the auction stage. Mo Wen chose a corner to sit down, paid some money to send the attendant away, as he was merely there to observe and gain experience, not needing anyone to attend to him.
People gradually arrived in the hall, filling up the seats behind the tables. With less than half an hour until the auction began, Mo Wen scanned the room. There were about two hundred people present, and there was no sound of conversation; even acquaintances merely nodded and smiled before taking their seats, quietly waiting for the auction to start.
"Welcome everyone to this auction. I won't take up your time with pleasantries; let's begin," announced a plump woman on stage, who promptly introduced the first item for bidding. From the expressions of two people seated nearby, Mo Wen could tell they regarded the woman with some trepidation.
One item after another was auctioned off, confirming what he had heard in the teahouse: all transactions were conducted using Ling Crystals. Mo Wen had no shortage of Ling Crystals, but while the items on stage were novel, they were not what he needed.
"This next item is the final piece of this auction. I believe many of you are here specifically for it. This blade is named Cangyue. I won’t say much more; it comes from the Mo Family and starts at ten Ling Crystals. Bids can be placed now," said the woman as she mentioned the Mo Family. Mo Wen felt a jolt of surprise and nearly stood up. Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he looked at the blade in her hand—a curved sword with a blade as black as ink, exuding an aura of lethal intent.
"Is it truly from the Mo Family?" someone inquired from below.
"If you don't believe it, you need not bid," replied the woman without further explanation. This sparked murmurs among the audience, and soon someone called out a bid.
"I bid fifteen."
"I bid twenty."
After several rounds of bidding, the Cangyue Blade reached a high price of fifty Ling Crystals in Mo Wen's eyes; it was worth no more than thirty Ling Crystals at most. However, for him, the value of the Mo Family far exceeded that of this blade. Perhaps Extreme Goods Pavilion knew about the Mo Family and spending some money to acquire this lead would be worthwhile.
"I bid eighty."
Eighty Ling Crystals for a blade—this was already more than double its intrinsic value. Everyone looked at Mo Wen, this young outsider who seemed like a wealthy heir throwing money around without hesitation. Little did they know that calling out eighty made Mo Wen's heart ache; if not for what he had heard about the Mo Family from the plump woman, he wouldn't have cared for this Cangyue Blade at all.
As participants gradually left after securing their items and settling their payments with attendants for their Ling Crystals, only Mo Wen remained seated in silence.
