My name is Li Wan, and I am 23 years old, a young and accomplished executive. I grew up with Cheng Wu; we attended elementary school, middle school, and high school together, and later joined the same company.
I have always been calm and easygoing, but Cheng Wu is different. He has a quick temper and often gets into fights. Fortunately, he is reasonable and never starts trouble; he only occasionally gets into verbal disputes over trivial matters. After he fights someone, no one usually pursues the issue, so I don't bother to lecture him.
One day after work, I waited for a long time but didn’t see Cheng Wu come out. Just as I was about to call him, I saw You Li Li rushing towards me. She looked anxious and almost in tears when she reached me. “Sister Wan, you have to help Cheng Wu!” she exclaimed.
I was startled and quickly asked where he was. She led me to a nearby bar. The place was dimly lit and the music was deafening. It took me a while to navigate through the dance floor before following her to a booth.
As soon as we got close, I saw Cheng Wu battered and bruised. One guy with dyed hair was holding him down while another was forcing a bottle into his mouth. Nearby, a crew-cut man was directing them, shouting, “Beat him! Kill him!”
Fury surged within me as I shouted, “Stop it!”
They paused and turned to look at me. The guy with dyed hair picked up the bottle and squinted at me. “Who are you?” he sneered.
I was taken aback. Throughout my life, I had always excelled academically; even my teachers had never spoken to me like that, let alone these punks.
Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I calmly pointed outside and said, “The police are coming.”
Just then, two men in suits entered the bar, looking like company executives. The crew-cut guys visibly tensed up; they released Cheng Wu and shot me a vicious glare before turning to flee.
I sighed in relief and helped You Li Li support Cheng Wu as we left the bar. He was in pain all over from the beating, and combined with the effects of alcohol, he groaned incoherently along the way without clearly explaining what had happened.
I felt a bit angry and couldn’t help but scold him, “Can’t you make things easier for everyone? You’re not a kid anymore; why are you still getting into fights?”
He lifted his swollen eye to look at me and said weakly, “Li Wan, stay away from me.”
I was taken aback.
He reluctantly raised a hand and pushed me away. "Stay back, don't get too close."
I said nothing more and, along with You Li Li, helped him back home. After comforting him for a bit, I finally left.
In the following days, Cheng Wu didn’t show up again. I wanted to ask about his injuries, but thinking of his attitude that day made me suppress my worries.
Fortunately, it wasn’t long before he bounced back to his usual self. After work, he would invite me and You Li Li out to have fun.
Every Friday night, I would head home alone because Cheng Wu was meeting his girlfriend, Yu Chao. They had been dating for six years and together for three; their relationship was great, and I never wanted to be a third wheel.
One Friday night, as I walked out of the office and prepared to go home, I reached the entrance of a small alley when suddenly three men rushed out and blocked my path.
I was startled. Upon closer inspection, the leader was none other than the buzz-cut guy.
He looked at me with a cold smirk. "Well, well, if it isn't the little brat I've caught!"
I took a step back, feeling a bit flustered but maintaining a smile on my face. "Hello, is there something you need?"
He snorted dismissively. "Cut the crap! You made me run last time; now you owe me!"
I smiled slightly. "Big brother, that's not really fair. Fighting is something for men; I'm just a weak girl. Calling the police would scare you off easily—how embarrassing would that be?"
He paused for a moment before becoming furious. "You little brat! Still talking back!"
With a wave of his hand, the two men behind him lunged forward.
Startled, I turned to run, but they were faster and grabbed hold of me.
The buzz-cut guy sized me up with a sneer. "Not bad-looking at all. Come on, let's go have dinner."
As he said this, he pulled me forward. I struggled with all my might, but he was too strong for me to break free.
Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I said to him, "Let go of me; I'll go with you."
He scoffed and released me.
Rubbing my wrist as I walked beside him, I negotiated, "Dinner is fine, but I can only stay for an hour; I still need to get home."
The buzz-cut guy seemed to think I had resigned myself to my fate and nodded indifferently.
I pointed toward an upscale restaurant ahead. "Let's go there; it's on me."
He looked surprised but still nodded in agreement.
During dinner, the buzz-cut guy kept staring at me, making me feel uneasy. I could only focus on my food and pretend I didn't notice him.
After the meal, he surprisingly stopped bothering me and even offered to give me a ride home. I shook my head and pointed to a convenience store not far away. "I work over there. I can go back by myself. You guys head home," I said.
Without waiting for his reaction, I turned and ran.
I sprinted to the entrance of the convenience store, finally letting out a sigh of relief. Looking back, they hadn't followed me. I felt a wave of relief wash over me; thankfully, I had been clever enough to keep them at bay for now.
Once home, I couldn't shake off the incident from earlier. A sense of dread lingered in my heart. That buzz-cut guy was clearly not a good person; if he had taken me away, who knows what could have happened?
But now that I was safe, I realized that since he had found me once, he could find me again. I needed to come up with a plan to deal with this situation.
