The next day, I slept until noon and had a quick bite before receiving a call from Cheng Wu. He invited me to lunch, and I gladly accepted.
The restaurant we often visited was members-only, so it usually had a low turnout, and weekends were even quieter. As soon as we entered, we spotted Xu Qiang sitting by the window, leisurely sipping his coffee. My heart sank; just as I was about to pull Cheng Wu away, he shook off my hand and strode towards Xu Qiang.
I was taken aback and hurried to catch up with him. Cheng Wu stood in front of Xu Qiang, his eyes downcast as he quietly said, “Xu Ge, I won’t come here again. Please let me go.”
I was utterly shocked. In my memory, while Cheng Wu had a fiery temper, he was also fearless; I had never seen him so submissive before. Xu Qiang looked at him, took a slow sip of his coffee, then stood up and walked over to him. He towered over Cheng Wu, looking down with a calm demeanor and said, “Remember your words.”
Cheng Wu nodded repeatedly, “I’ll remember, I’ll remember.”
As Xu Qiang turned to leave, Cheng Wu called out to him again, “Xu Ge, last time it was my friend’s fault. She has already apologized to you; what more do you want?”
Xu Qiang paused and glanced back at him, a smirk curling at the corners of his mouth. “What I want depends on you.”
Cheng Wu’s face turned pale, speechless. Xu Qiang shot me another glance before walking away.
I let out a sigh of relief and quickly pulled Cheng Wu along. “Let’s go.”
He obediently followed me into the car and remained silent throughout the ride. It wasn’t until we were nearing the company that he finally asked me, “Li Wan, do you think I’m useless?”
I was taken aback for a moment and hurried to reassure him. “Of course not! You’re my best friend; I know you better than anyone.”
He shook his head. “You don’t understand. I’m a man but constantly take Xu Qiang’s abuse. I can’t even protect the girl I like…”
I fell silent. I knew who he meant by the girl he liked—her name was Yu Chao, Cheng Wu’s girlfriend and also Xu Qiang’s girl.
Yu Chao was beautiful and had a great personality. Cheng Wu liked her a lot, but because of Xu Qiang's presence, they had to keep their relationship a secret during their dates.
Cheng Wu had told me more than once that he wanted to be with Yu Chao openly, but I knew it was difficult for him. After all, Xu Qiang was not someone to be trifled with.
Though he wasn't a major thug, he was tough and had a group of loyal followers around him, making quite a name for himself in the area. There was a man who once offended Xu Qiang with his words and ended up with a broken leg for his trouble. When the man reported it to the police, they merely reprimanded Xu Qiang and let him go, which caused quite a stir locally and only enhanced Xu Qiang's reputation.
Since then, people kept their distance from Xu Qiang, wary of crossing him. I actually knew Xu Qiang from childhood; our families lived close together, and I had even eaten at his house. But after they moved away, we lost touch. The next time I saw him, he had grown into quite the little rogue.
I initially thought we would never cross paths again, but fate had other plans for us. I tried to comfort Cheng Wu, telling him not to take Xu Qiang's words to heart. He shook his head, insisting he wasn't afraid; he just didn't want to drag me into his troubles.
I smiled and said, "Even if you're not here, I'll still come." He sighed and didn't say anything more.
