A few days later, I made a big decision.
That day, while Cheng Wu was away, I sneaked into the restaurant alone and found Xu Qiang. He was sipping coffee and looked surprised when he saw me enter. "What are you doing here again?" he asked.
I placed the money in front of him. "This is for the meal you treated me to last time."
He raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
I looked him in the eye. "Why do you think you can keep Cheng Wu from coming to this restaurant?"
He narrowed his eyes. "Because I want to."
"You’ve already chased Cheng Wu away once; isn’t that enough?"
He chuckled. "Li Wan, are you standing up for him?"
I shook my head. "I just think you should know your limits. I'm not Cheng Wu; even if you try to kick me out, I won't listen to you."
He stared at me intently, then suddenly laughed. "Li Wan, you're becoming more and more interesting."
I took half a step back. "Please show some restraint."
His smile faded, and he looked at me coldly. "Li Wan, in this city, I am the authority. No one dares to defy me. Are you trying to provoke me?"
The atmosphere around us instantly grew tense.
I instinctively clenched my fists, forcing myself to remain calm as I replied, "I'm just stating the facts. If that's how you want to interpret it, there's nothing I can do."
He fixed his gaze on me, his expression shifting unpredictably.
My heart raced; I was truly scared, but I couldn’t back down.
After a moment, he suddenly smiled. "Interesting, really interesting."
He stood up and walked around me in a circle before leaning down close to my ear and whispering, "Li Wan, you're becoming more and more fun; I'm really starting to like you."
I pushed him away abruptly and glared at him warily. "Are you crazy?"
He shrugged. "I'm serious."
I looked at him in disbelief. "You must be out of your mind."
He let out a light laugh and turned to leave.
I let out a sigh of relief, grateful that he didn't take any action against me. Although the process was a bit thrilling, I achieved my goal; from now on, whenever Cheng Wu came here, no one would chase him away. I smiled with satisfaction.
The following days went smoothly for me, and Cheng Wu seemed quite happy as well, inviting me out for meals more often. When I asked him what was making him so cheerful, he mysteriously refused to tell me, only saying to wait and see.
I shrugged it off and continued with my work. One morning, as soon as I arrived at the office, I received a text from Cheng Wu inviting me to lunch. I chuckled and replied that I had plans for noon and told him to eat by himself. He sent back a pouty emoji: "Li Wan, you can't abandon me."
I laughed and set my phone down, ignoring him.
At noon, I had lunch scheduled with a client at a private room in a five-star hotel. After wrapping up the business discussion, I escorted the client out. Turning around, I was surprised to see Cheng Wu standing not far away, grinning at me. Beside him stood a girl—Yu Chao.
I was taken aback. "You two…"
Cheng Wu stepped forward and threw an arm around my shoulder. "Li Wan, I've successfully completed the task you assigned!"
I was momentarily stunned. Yu Chao approached me, took my hand, and said softly, "Li Wan, thank you."
I still didn't understand what was happening as I followed them out of the hotel and into Cheng Wu's car. It was then that it dawned on me: the task Cheng Wu referred to was officially starting a relationship with Yu Chao. He had invited me out to share this good news.
I asked him, "How did you manage that? Xu Qiang actually let go?"
Cheng Wu shot me a proud glance. "That's because I'm capable! Honestly, I've wanted to be with Yu Chao for a long time; it was just that Xu Qiang kept getting in the way. Whenever I invited her out for dinner, Xu Qiang would come looking for trouble; if I ignored her, I'd worry about her feelings. It was driving me crazy."
"After you said those things to me that day, I realized I couldn't go on like this anymore. I needed to step up like a man and fight for what I wanted."
"So you went to find Xu Qiang?"
He nodded. "I arranged to meet him in a secluded place and told him I wanted to be with Yu Chao, asking him not to cause us any more trouble."
I looked at him in surprise. "He actually agreed?"
He nodded again. "At first, he didn't agree, so I had to fight him until he did."
I realized, "No wonder you've been out so much lately; I thought you were working overtime."
He chuckled, "Fighting Xu Qiang takes a lot of energy, so I had to eat more to replenish myself."
I couldn't help but laugh.
Yu Chao, who was listening nearby, was also laughing uncontrollably.
I smiled at her and asked, "What about you? What do you think?"
She held Cheng Wu's hand tightly. "Of course, I want to be with him."
I felt a sense of relief and smiled.
Though the process was a bit complicated, the outcome was still good.
