The sun by the seaside was scorching, but the carefree feeling of being away from the hustle and bustle of work drove everyone into a frenzy of fun. Mrs. Gui, with her two little treasures, mingled among a group of young children, laughing and playing in the waves on the beach, their faces beaming with joy and flushed from the sun.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, Mr. Gui led a few strong men to tidy up the area while others packed their belongings and changed out of their swimsuits, signaling the end of a joyful day.
The staff responsible for driving had lined up various vehicles in front of the activity center. Instead of adhering to the morning arrangements, everyone shuffled around and sat wherever they pleased. The two children from the Gui family squeezed into a company van with a bunch of other kids, filling it to capacity. Each insisted on riding in that vehicle, refusing to get out, leaving the parents with no choice but to agree to return to the company together to pick them up.
Mr. Gui decided to drive the van himself and handed his car over to Mrs. Gui. Yue Wen, who was nearby, piped up, “Auntie, I just got my driver's license! Can I help you drive?”
“Can you handle it? Driving at night?” Mrs. Gui looked at him skeptically. He was the younger twin son of the general manager; his older brother also participated in the company event.
“I can do it! No problem!” Yue Wen replied confidently.
He brought along his brother Yue Wu and an accountant lady, filling up one vehicle just as everyone else was getting sorted out. The van led the way as they left the square, with Yue Wen cautiously trailing behind. Perhaps he was too careful; he gradually fell behind and lost sight of the others. It was fine on the street, but as they neared the outskirts of Maoshan Town, Yue Wen found himself unsure of where to go at a fork in the road.
“Auntie, which way did they go?” Yue Wen asked Mrs. Gui beside him.
“I didn’t notice either,” she admitted, equally uncertain.
“This way!” Yue Wu in the back seat pointed out a sign indicating “to Ningzhou” on the left.
Yue Wen turned the steering wheel left and drove onto Yangjin Highway, feeling lost but determined. The road began to climb into the mountains, and the scenery turned desolate. Fortunately, there were still signs along the way that helped reassure them; however, Yue Wen realized they were likely on a different route.
The mountain road was monotonous and boring; after a long day of fun in the sun, only Yue Wen remained alert enough to drive while the other three dozed off, heads bobbing like fishing rods. Yue Wen rolled down the window; not having to follow a convoy made him feel relaxed. The mountain roads were less crowded than regular ones—aside from frequent turns—and suited him perfectly as a cool breeze blew through; it was indeed a beautiful night.
As darkness fell, Yue Wen switched on his high beams and drove steadily with increasing confidence. Approaching Yapu City, Mrs. Gui seemed uncomfortable in her sleep and adjusted her seat back to lie flatter while curling her knees up against Yue Wen’s back like a cat seeking comfort.
After changing out of her swimsuit, Mrs. Gui wore a simple loose-fitting sundress that barely covered her behind when she bent her legs; much of her creamy skin was exposed. The Yangjin Highway had no streetlights except near villages; inside the car was dimly lit and visibility was poor. However, outlines were still vaguely discernible, causing Yue Wen to steal glances at those beautiful legs beside him. He checked his rearview mirror again; both Yue Wu and the accountant lady had shifted positions to rest their heads on each other’s shoulders and continued sleeping soundly.
