"Is that all?" The cashier glanced at the items and then at Lin Xiaofan's faded shirt cuffs and cracked leather shoes.
"Um." Lin Xiaofan awkwardly turned his face away and scanned to pay the last 50 yuan. His phone popped up a notification: insufficient balance. It was only then that he remembered his balance of 47.85 yuan from earlier.
"Uh... can I..." His voice grew softer.
The cashier rolled her eyes, "Short by two yuan? Forget it, just consider it a good deed."
Lin Xiaofan lowered his head as he took the receipt and found a corner to sit down. The convenience store's glass window reflected his haggard face: messy hair, sunken eyes, and stubble on his chin. He hardly looked like a 25-year-old young man.
He carefully placed the cake on the table and pulled out a crumpled candle from his pocket, sticking it in the center of the cake. The flame of the lighter flickered a few times before finally going out.
"Even you bully me..." Lin Xiaofan chuckled self-deprecatingly, ready to give up when suddenly his phone vibrated.
A message popped up on the screen with no number:
【Hundredfold Return System activated. Test transaction: Donate 1 yuan to any charity organization.】
"The scam messages these days are getting ridiculous." Lin Xiaofan shook his head, hovering his finger over the delete button. Just then, his gaze fell on a small card next to the cake—it was promoting a stray animal rescue fundraising event at the convenience store, with a photo showing several dirty puppies looking eagerly at the camera.
On a whim, he scanned the QR code on the card and entered an amount of 1 yuan. Just as the payment success notification chimed, his phone buzzed with a bank notification:
【Income of 100 yuan Note: Goodwill Return】
Lin Xiaofan jumped up suddenly, the chair screeching against the floor. He hurriedly opened the banking app, repeatedly confirming that this wasn’t an illusion—his account balance had indeed changed from 0 yuan to 100 yuan!
"How... how is this possible?"
His heart raced, and his temples throbbed. To verify, he tried donating another 1 yuan to a different charity project. Almost instantly, another bank notification arrived:
【Income of 100 yuan Note: Goodwill Return】
Lin Xiaofan's hands began to tremble, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He glanced around nervously, fearing someone might notice his unusual behavior. The cashier was dozing off, and aside from him, there was only a drunken middle-aged man selecting beer from the fridge.
For the third experiment, he gritted his teeth and donated 10 yuan.
【Income of 1000 yuan Note: Goodwill Return】
"Damn..." Lin Xiaofan covered his mouth, afraid he would exclaim out loud. He trembled as he tried to transfer this money to his mother but was stopped by a red warning:
【Warning! Refund funds are for charitable purposes only】
Not giving up, he attempted to use this money to order a takeaway worth 30 yuan online; the transaction succeeded; however, when he tried to withdraw it to his bank card, another warning popped up again.
Outside, the rain had unknowingly stopped. Lin Xiaofan stared at his phone screen and then at the cake on the table that had already melted away. The streetlight's glow filtered through the glass, casting a pale white light on the melting cream surface.
He slowly sat down and donated the remaining 99 yuan to the Cancer Foundation. As the notification sound of the transaction chimed repeatedly, the convenience store's broadcast played the evening news:
"... Recently, there have been multiple cases of new types of scams. The police remind citizens not to trust investments promising high returns..."
Lin Xiaofan turned off his phone and gazed out the glass window. A gaunt stray cat was watching him warily, its green eyes glimmering in the darkness. The cat's right ear was missing a chunk, a scar from what seemed like a fight.
A slight smile crept onto his lips, thoughtful in nature. His left hand unconsciously toyed with a coin in his pocket, the last of his possessions.
"A hundredfold return... for charitable purposes..." Lin Xiaofan murmured, "Interesting."
