"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The urgent knocking on the door jolted Lin Xiaofan awake. He struggled to rise from the sofa, his head pounding as if it might split open from the hangover. Outside, the morning light was just beginning to brighten the skyline, and the digital clock read 5:17.
"Who is it?" he croaked, reaching for his phone on the coffee table—thirteen unread messages, all from Su Yuqing.
"Open the door! It's an emergency!" Su Yuqing's voice came through the door, unusually tinged with panic.
Lin Xiaofan swung the door open, and Su Yuqing practically rushed in. Today, she had not tied her hair back; her disheveled black locks framed a pale face, and in her hand, she clutched a document stamped with a red seal.
"Zhao Tianming has taken action." She slammed the document onto the coffee table. "The charity association demands a review of all our accounts by ten this morning, citing 'suspected illegal fundraising.'"
Lin Xiaofan's drowsiness vanished in an instant. He grabbed the document; the dense legal jargon seemed to leap out at him, but the core message was clear—if they could not prove the legal source and use of every single penny, Weiguang Public Welfare would face suspension of all activities and even criminal charges.
"I'll go change clothes." He turned and dashed into the bedroom, grabbing a shirt and suit pants. "Have you reached Old Zhou?"
"The phone has been unanswered." Su Yuqing paced back and forth in the living room. "A Long went to his house, but..."
Suddenly, Lin Xiaofan's phone vibrated. He thought it was Old Zhou returning his call but saw a System Notification instead:
【Emergency Status】
【External Audit Alert】
【System Funds Temporarily Frozen】
【Suggestion: Use Personal Funds for Emergencies】
"Damn it!" he couldn't help but curse. "The system funds are unusable!"
"What system?" Su Yuqing looked up alertly.
Lin Xiaofan realized he had let something slip and quickly corrected himself: "I mean... it seems there's an issue with the bank system."
Su Yuqing narrowed her eyes but did not press further. "The estimated audit cost is around fifty thousand, including expert consultation fees and deposits." She flipped through the account book. "We only have thirty-two thousand in cash we can mobilize."
Lin Xiaofan glanced at his watch—it was 6:03. The bank wouldn’t open for another hour and a half, but the audit would start at nine. Gritting his teeth, he fished out his wallet from under the sofa cushion. "I have a backup card; there should be twenty thousand left on it."
"You..." Su Yuqing hesitated, her gaze falling on the worn savings card. "Isn't this your emergency money?"
"This is exactly when I need emergency funds." Lin Xiaofan forced a smile.
At seven o'clock, as the city began to awaken, Lin Xiaofan stood in front of an ATM machine, his fingers trembling slightly as he entered his password. This card was his last lifeline—the twenty thousand compensation from a mining accident that his father had secretly given him before passing away.
"Please wait..." The machine emitted a cold mechanical voice. Lin Xiaofan nervously glanced around, anxious about running into someone he knew. Just then, a familiar figure appeared at the street corner—Su Yuqing was approaching with two cups of coffee in hand.
"Damn it!" He fumbled to press the withdrawal button. The machine buzzed and spat out a stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills.
"What are you doing?" Su Yuqing's voice came from behind, cold as ice.
Lin Xiaofan turned around to see her staring at the money in his hands, her face pale. "I can explain..."
"Explain what?" Su Yuqing's voice was low, but each word cut like a knife. "Explain why you secretly took the project funds? Explain how you've been using us from the very beginning?"
The coffee cup in her hand crumpled under her grip, hot liquid dripping onto the asphalt like a pool of blood.
"This isn't project funding!" Lin Xiaofan hurriedly explained. "It's my own..."
