Wang Wu's confession exploded like a bomb in our small team.
Xie Hanshuang was the first to jump up, pointing an accusing finger at Wang Wu's nose and shouting, "You, Wang Wu, how dare you betray us! You... you... you are simply a... a... a..."
Her face turned as red as a ripe tomato, but she struggled to find a harsher word.
I patted her shoulder and comforted her, "Calm down, calm down. When it comes to cursing, there's an art to it. You can't just vent your emotions; you need to be articulate and logical so that people can accept it. Look at you, your face is as red as a monkey's backside."
Xie Hanshuang took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. She pointed at Wang Wu and gritted her teeth, saying, "Wang Wu, you... you... ungrateful traitor, heartless scoundrel, utterly despicable, worse than a pig or dog, with the face of a human but the heart of a beast..."
She stumbled again.
I sighed; it seemed impossible to expect Xie Hanshuang to come up with anything more creative. This girl usually seemed clever but fell apart at critical moments.
I turned to Wang Wu and asked, "Wang Wu, do you have anything else to say?"
Wang Wu kept his head down in silence, looking like a student who had done something wrong. He occasionally stole glances at me before quickly looking away again, his expression resembling that of a little hamster caught sneaking food.
I pressed on, "What exactly is the Dark Council?"
Wang Wu hesitated for a moment before saying, "The Dark Council... is a... mysterious organization... they... they want to... control the entire world..."
"Control the entire world?" I couldn't help but laugh. "That goal is just too... grand! Why don't they aim to conquer the universe instead? Aren't they afraid of straining themselves?"
Wang Wu ignored my sarcasm and continued, "The Dark Council... possesses... powerful technology... and... viral weapons..."
"Viral weapons?" My interest piqued. "Could it be that the Soul Devouring Virus was created by them?"
Wang Wu nodded, as if he had finally lifted a heavy burden off his shoulders and felt much lighter.
"So it’s true..." I murmured to myself. "I knew this virus wasn't simple. These guys spend all their time on these crooked paths; can't they do something legitimate for once?"
At that moment, the voice of Zhong Dali came through the team channel: "Boss... we have a situation..."
"What situation?" I asked.
"I... I found... someone... approaching..." Zhong Dali said, his tone laced with a hint of panic.
"What kind of people?" My heart tightened. "Is it the Dark Council? Those guys are quick to act."
"I... I don't know..." Zhong Dali replied. "There are... a lot of them... and... and..."
"And what? Can you just spit it out? You're making me anxious!" I pressed.
"And they... they're all wearing... strange outfits..." Zhong Dali said, his voice growing even more peculiar.
Strange outfits?
I was puzzled. What was this about? Could it be a special unit from the Dark Council? Their sense of aesthetics is truly... unique.
I hurried to the window and looked outside.
Sure enough, I saw a group of people walking toward us.
They were dressed in all sorts of bizarre costumes. Some wore ancient armor, wielding rusty swords, as if they had just crawled out of a tomb. Others donned modern military uniforms but wore ridiculous clown masks—who knew if they were on a mission or attending a masquerade ball? There were also those in odd cosplay outfits, with one waving a plastic wand as a Magical Girl, another carrying a cardboard rocket launcher as a futuristic warrior, and even one dressed in a bikini, draped in a beach towel, holding a surfboard—a Sexy Lady!
What… is going on?
Could it be… an apocalypse cosplay contest? These folks have some nerve; the world is ending, and they still have time for this.
As I was pondering this, suddenly, the system's voice echoed in my mind: "Ding! Congratulations, host, you have triggered a hidden quest: New Allies Arrive."
"Are these people... here to join us? System, are you sure you're not joking with me?"
A surge of joy filled my heart; this was truly... a timely blessing! Although their appearance was a bit... peculiar, as long as they could fight, who cared what they wore, right?
I quickly opened the team channel and said, "Zhong Dali, get ready to welcome our guests!"
"Guests?" Zhong Dali replied with confusion. "Boss... are you sure... they're guests and not... enemies? They look like they came to attend a carnival..."
"Of course I'm sure!" I asserted confidently. "They... are here to join us! The system said so; it can't be wrong!"
"But... they don't really look like..." Zhong Dali said, his tone filled with skepticism.
"Trust me!" I insisted. "I have a feeling! My instincts are usually spot on, except for last time..."
I quickly cut myself off; that last premonition was too painful to recall.
As the group in their strange outfits drew closer, I finally got a good look at them.
Leading the pack was a tall woman clad in a tight black suit, wearing dark sunglasses. Her fiery red hair flowed in the wind, giving her an air of confidence. This outfit was particularly... out of place in this apocalyptic world.
"Hello," she said, removing her sunglasses to reveal bright eyes. "My name is... Thunder."
Thunder?
That name was indeed... quite imposing! Though it didn't quite match her attire.
"Hello," I replied quickly. "I'm Wei Na, the captain of this team."
"I know," Thunder said. "I've heard of your great reputation. It's said that you have led your team to repeatedly defeat the Dark Council; truly impressive."
"You're too kind," I responded. "It's just been good luck so far. May I ask... what brings you here?"
"We're here to join you," said Thunder. "We heard... you need help... and the benefits are good."
"That's right," I replied. "We warmly welcome your joining! As for the benefits... we provide food and lodging, and occasionally you can enjoy fresh vegetables. How does that sound? Not bad, right?"
"That's great," Thunder said. "We... will join you right away."
As soon as Thunder finished speaking, the oddly dressed individuals behind her began to approach.
"Hello, my name is... Iron Man," said a person clad in Iron Man armor, his voice deep and echoing, as if it were coming from a can.
"Hello, my name is... Captain America," said another in a Captain America uniform, holding a battered trash can lid as a shield.
"Hello, my name is... Spider-Man," introduced a figure in a Spider-Man costume, mimicking the action of shooting webs but without actually producing any.
"Hello, my name is... Superman," said another individual dressed as Superman, his outfit emblazoned with a large "S," albeit somewhat faded.
"Hello, my name is... Batman," said yet another in a Batman costume, his cape stitched together from two tattered pieces of cloth.
As I looked at these bizarre characters, I felt my worldview... beginning to crumble.
What on earth are these people?
