The biting cold wind wrapped around the dampness of the mountains, awakening Meng Hao's consciousness from chaos. He suddenly opened his eyes, and what met his gaze was a strange yet ancient ceiling, with a faint scent of herbs lingering in the air. The intense pain throughout his body reminded him of everything that had happened before he lost consciousness—the pursuit by Youmingfu and that life-saving white figure at the last moment. He struggled to sit up but found his limbs weak and unresponsive.
"You're awake?" A clear voice rang out beside him.
Meng Hao turned his head to see a young woman in a blue robe standing by the bed, her delicate brows slightly furrowed, her eyes filled with curiosity and scrutiny. She had a well-proportioned figure, her graceful curves subtly hinted at beneath the robe. Her long black hair was casually pinned up with a wooden hairpin, yet it could not conceal her natural charm. It was Sun Ruoshui, the disciple of Kongtong Sect who had helped him that day.
"How do you feel?" Sun Ruoshui stepped closer, extending her slender fingers to check his pulse, her movements skilled and gentle.
Meng Hao felt somewhat uncomfortable avoiding her touch; he could sense that her fingers were cold but carried an inexplicable warmth. His throat was dry, and he managed to squeeze out a few words, "Where... where am I?"
"Kongtong Sect," Sun Ruoshui replied, withdrawing her hand. Her tone was flat yet carried a hint of amusement. "When your senior brother brought you back, you were barely alive. Now, word has spread outside that you’re just a woodcutter who managed to kill a top expert from Youmingfu with a single axe strike. Quite remarkable, isn't it?" She looked him up and down, her gaze filled with inquiry.
Meng Hao furrowed his brow tightly; he could feel the scrutiny and disdain in Sun Ruoshui's words, as if he were some shameful anomaly. He struggled to recall everything that had happened before he fainted—the power of the Heavenly Axe, the assassins who fell beneath its blade, and Li Yunyan...
"What about Li Yunyan?" he suddenly asked, urgency creeping into his voice.
Sun Ruoshui scoffed lightly, her tone laced with disdain. "That woman? She left long ago. When your senior brother brought you back, she took advantage of the chaos to escape. What? You still care about her?" There was a barely perceptible sneer in her eyes.
Hearing this, Meng Hao's heart sank. Li Yunyan had left... Yes, she was always a mysterious woman; perhaps it was for survival or some other purpose that she chose to leave. Yet for some reason, an indescribable sense of loss welled up within him.
"A woodcutter—what status could he possibly have? Just someone who stumbled upon a Divine Weapon," came a hostile voice from the doorway.
Meng Hao turned to see Li Muqing striding in confidently, a mocking smile on his face and jealousy evident in his eyes. Behind him followed several disciples of Kongtong Sect, all regarding Meng Hao with curious yet doubtful expressions.
"You’re that woodcutter?" Li Muqing approached the bed and looked down at Meng Hao with contempt in his voice. "I heard you possess a Divine Weapon capable of slaying Youmingfu experts? What a ridiculous joke!"
"You..." Meng Hao clenched his fists tightly as anger surged within him. He disliked being looked down upon even more than being insulted.
"What’s wrong? Did I hit a nerve and make you angry?" Li Muqing sneered, waving his hand at the disciples behind him. "Look at this pathetic woodcutter; he dares to act wildly on my Kongtong Sect’s territory!"
The disciples laughed mockingly, their eyes gleaming with schadenfreude.
"Enough!" Sun Ruoshui frowned and scolded him. "Li Muqing, don’t go too far! After all, he is a guest invited back by the sect leader!"
"A guest?" Li Muqing scoffed again, filled with disdain. "A wild brat of unknown origins is worthy of being our Kongtong Sect’s guest? Sun Shimei, I think you’ve been fooled by his pitiful appearance!"
At that moment, a voice, ancient and imposing, came from outside the door: “Mu Qing, do not be disrespectful!”
Everyone turned to see Bai Yunzi walking in slowly. His white beard flowed gracefully, and his gaze was resolute. Despite his advanced age, he emanated an aura that commanded respect.
“Master!” Li Muqing's expression changed, and he quickly suppressed the mockery on his face, bowing respectfully. The other disciples also lowered their heads, not daring to speak further.
Bai Yunzi approached Meng Hao's bedside, his piercing gaze scrutinizing him. Ignoring Li Muqing, he directly addressed Meng Hao: “Young friend, I am Bai Yunzi, the Sect Master of Kongtong Sect. Do you know what that axe you possess is?”
Meng Hao's heart tightened; he understood that Bai Yunzi was testing him. After a moment of hesitation, he decided to speak the truth since the axe was merely a chance acquisition for him: “Replying to the Sect Master, this axe is called the Heavenly Axe, which I obtained by chance.”
“Obtained by chance?” Li Muqing couldn't help but scoff, skepticism evident in his eyes.
Bai Yunzi paid no heed to Li Muqing; he continued to fixate on Meng Hao, his eyes glinting with an inscrutable light. After pondering for a moment, he suddenly asked, “Would you allow me to see the power of this axe?”
Meng Hao felt a stir within; he recognized this as an opportunity from Bai Yunzi. Slowly sitting up, though still somewhat weak, his gaze grew resolute. He glanced at Li Muqing and smirked coldly: “Since the Sect Master wishes to see, I shall demonstrate.”
Struggling to get out of bed, he walked into the courtyard. The Heavenly Axe in his hand emitted a faint bronze glow; though not as dazzling as before, it still radiated a heavy pressure.
Li Muqing's eyes flashed with disdain; he was eager to see what tricks a mere woodcutter could conjure.
Taking a deep breath, Meng Hao felt the surge of internal energy within him. Though limited, it was enough to support a swing of the axe. He tightened his grip on the Heavenly Axe, crouched slightly, and then swung upward with all his might!
“Boom!”
A tremendous sound erupted as the Heavenly Axe sliced through the air like lightning towards a massive rock in the courtyard. The rock was as large as a grinding stone and incredibly hard. However, beneath the Heavenly Axe's might, it crumbled like tofu.
“Crack!”
The rock split apart with a resounding crack, a massive fissure spreading from its center as debris flew everywhere. The bronze glow did not dissipate after cleaving the rock but transformed into an invisible ripple that spread outward.
All the disciples in the courtyard were stunned; they gaped at the scene before them with expressions of shock and disbelief. They never expected that an ordinary-looking woodcutter could unleash such terrifying power!
Li Muqing's face turned pale in an instant; terror and jealousy filled his eyes. His prideful Seven Injuries Fist could not easily cleave through a rock like that!
A glimmer of brilliance flashed in Bai Yunzi's eyes as he gazed at the Heavenly Axe in Meng Hao's hands, filled with admiration. He knew that this axe was no ordinary weapon, and Meng Hao was no ordinary woodcutter.
"This... how is this possible!" a disciple exclaimed involuntarily.
Meng Hao retracted the Heavenly Axe. Though his body was weak, a hint of pride adorned his face. He turned to Li Muqing, a mocking smile curling at the corners of his mouth. "Brother Li, what do you think of my woodcutter's axe technique?"
Li Muqing's face turned ashen. He clenched his fists, his nails digging deep into his palms, yet he couldn't utter a word. He felt the strange gazes of the surrounding disciples—shock, curiosity, and even a touch of reverence. This sensation clawed at his heart like a cat's scratch.
Sun Ruoshui watched Meng Hao, her eyes sparkling with intrigue. She hadn't expected this seemingly dull woodcutter to unleash such astonishing power. Suddenly, she felt that Meng Hao was not as simple as she had imagined.
Bai Yunzi approached Meng Hao and patted him on the shoulder, speaking earnestly. "Young friend, your strength exceeds my expectations. The axe in your hand is certainly no trivial item. Would you be willing to join my Kongtong Sect and undergo trials?"
At these words, Meng Hao's heart trembled. He knew this was an opportunity to change his fate. He looked into Bai Yunzi's kind eyes and then at the varied expressions of the surrounding disciples; he understood that this path was one he had to take.
"I am willing to join Kongtong Sect and undergo trials!" Meng Hao knelt on one knee, his voice firm and powerful.
Bai Yunzi nodded in satisfaction, helping Meng Hao up with eyes full of expectation. "Good! Very good! From today onward, you shall be a registered disciple of Kongtong Sect. As for your identity, it will naturally be revealed once you pass the trials!"
He cast a meaningful glance at Li Muqing before addressing all the disciples. "You may disperse! Meng Hao needs to rest."
Upon hearing this, although many questions lingered in their minds, the disciples dared not defy their master's orders and began to leave. Li Muqing shot Meng Hao a resentful glare before following the crowd out.
