The morning sunlight filtered through the green mountains, cascading onto the Chongdong Sect's arena like scattered gold. The ambiguous events of yesterday felt like a dream to Meng Hao, yet the faint scent of medicine from Sun Ruoshui and the subtle pressure at his waist reminded him that everything had indeed happened. He looked at the bustling crowd in front of him, and the fighting spirit that had filled his heart was now replaced by an indescribable restlessness.
"Meng Hao, how are you feeling?" Sun Ruoshui had somehow appeared by his side, her voice laced with concern, though her gaze unconsciously drifted to his waist, a barely perceptible smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
Meng Hao jolted awake, feeling the curious stares of disciples from various sects around him. His face flushed with embarrassment as he straightened up and lowered his voice, "Much better, thanks to your timely assistance."
He instinctively glanced around and spotted Li Muqing standing not far away, his eyes fixed on Meng Hao with a sinister glare, as if he wanted to devour him whole. A warning bell rang in Meng Hao's mind; he knew today’s competition would not be peaceful.
"Be careful of Li Muqing; he's quite treacherous," Sun Ruoshui noticed Li Muqing's gaze as well. She leaned closer to Meng Hao and whispered, her warm breath brushing against his ear, causing his heart to race.
Meng Hao nodded and tightened his grip on the Heavenly Axe. The runes on the axe seemed to sense his emotions, flickering with light as a surge of resilient power flowed from it, instantly calming him.
The martial arts competition officially began.
With a command from Bai Yunzi, the sect leader, disciples surged into the arena like a tide, eager to showcase their skills. Standing amidst the crowd, Meng Hao felt like a small boat suddenly caught in a torrent, at risk of being swallowed by monstrous waves. Yet there was no trace of fear in his eyes; instead, a fierce fighting spirit ignited within him.
In the first round of matches, Meng Hao faced a young disciple from a minor sect. The disciple was slender but boasted of exceptional skills. He launched into an elaborate sword technique right away, trying to trap Meng Hao with a flurry of sword shadows.
"Child's play!" Meng Hao scoffed as he deftly spun the Heavenly Axe in his hands. The axe sliced through the air in graceful arcs like a dragon twisting in flight, instantly tearing apart the disciple's sword shadows. With one powerful swing, he unleashed a sharp sound that sent the disciple staggering back several steps, causing his sword to clatter to the ground.
"Damn! This woodcutter... such strength!"
"This axe... it's practically a Divine Weapon!"
Gasps of astonishment erupted from the onlookers as they watched in shock. They had initially thought Meng Hao was just a brute but were taken aback by his exquisite axe techniques. Standing in the center of the arena, he exuded an imposing aura, his gaze sharp as it swept across the crowd.
He reveled in this attention, feeling as if he had returned to the depths of the mountains where he could cleave through thorns and obstacles.
In subsequent matches, Meng Hao continued to dominate effortlessly. No matter what techniques his opponents employed, they were all cleaved apart by his axe strikes, showcasing overwhelming strength. Each swing sent howling winds through the air; every hit resonated with deep thuds that made it seem as if the entire arena trembled beneath his might.
Amongst the crowd, Li Muqing's expression grew increasingly grim. Watching Meng Hao shine on stage ignited a burning jealousy within him. He had believed his plans were foolproof but never anticipated that this woodcutter would be so deeply concealed.
"Hmph! The competition isn't over yet!" A glint of malice flashed in Li Muqing's eyes as he quietly retreated to the back of the crowd. He pulled out a small vial from his robe and poured out several fragrant pills into his mouth without drawing attention.
He licked his lips and curled them into an eerie smile.
As the crucial rounds of the competition approached, Meng Hao's opponents grew increasingly formidable. One of the inner disciples from the Kongtong Sect had reached the peak of the Meridian Opening stage. With a powerful palm strike, he unleashed a howling gust of wind that surged straight toward Meng Hao's face.
Instead of retreating, Meng Hao advanced, positioning the Heavenly Axe before him. The axe emitted a resonant hum as a bronze light instantly enveloped his arms.
"Qingtong Arm!"
The disciple's palm struck heavily against Meng Hao's arms with a resounding thud. However, the anticipated scene of Meng Hao being sent flying did not occur; he merely swayed slightly, and the bronze light on his arms remained steadfast.
"What... what kind of defense is this?" The disciple's expression changed drastically as he felt a counterforce surge back at him, numbing his arm and forcing him to stumble backward a few steps.
A glimmer of brilliance flashed in Meng Hao's eyes. He sensed the power emanating from the axe and couldn't help but feel delighted. The shield ability of the Heavenly Axe was indeed more powerful than he had imagined.
Not giving his opponent a moment to breathe, Meng Hao swung the Heavenly Axe like a fierce tiger descending from the mountain, striking down toward the disciple with tremendous force. With no way to evade, the disciple could only raise his arms to block, but was still sent flying by Meng Hao's blow, crashing heavily to the ground.
A hush fell over the crowd as everyone was stunned by Meng Hao's strength. A mere woodcutter possessed such astonishing power and defense, far beyond their comprehension.
Just as Meng Hao prepared to conclude the battle and turn away, a sharp shadow suddenly darted from the crowd, aiming directly at his back.
"Meng Hao, be careful!" Sun Ruoshui cried out urgently, her voice laced with panic, but it was already too late.
The shadow moved with incredible speed, carrying a chilling wind that aimed for Meng Hao's back. It was a poisoned dagger that glinted ominously in the sunlight.
A chill ran down Meng Hao's spine as he instinctively sensed the murderous intent behind him through his connection with the Heavenly Axe. He spun around sharply; the Heavenly Axe swept out like lightning, cutting through the air with a thunderous roar.
"Clang!"
The dagger collided with the axe in a sharp metallic clash. The dagger was sent flying while the shadow revealed itself to be Li Muqing!
"Li Muqing, how dare you plot against me!" Bai Yunzi, the sect leader, shouted furiously, his face pale and eyes blazing with anger.
Li Muqing ignored their furious shouts; madness flickered in his eyes as he lunged at Meng Hao once more. His hands transformed into claws, fingertips glimmering with dark light—clearly coated in deadly poison.
"Die! You worthless woodcutter!" Li Muqing screamed, intensifying his assault.
Cold light flashed in Meng Hao's eyes; he knew Li Muqing had completely lost his sanity. No longer holding back, he wielded the Heavenly Axe with renewed vigor, and the radiance of Qingtong Arm shone even brighter.
"Those who threaten must be punished, and those who defy must be dealt with!" Meng Hao shouted angrily, as the Heavenly Axe descended with the force of thunder, striking fiercely at Li Muqing.
The axe carried unmatched power, and the air seemed to tear apart. Li Muqing's face changed dramatically; he attempted to dodge but found himself locked in place by an invisible force, unable to move.
"No!" he let out a desperate scream.
"Boom!"
With a tremendous sound, the axe crashed heavily into Li Muqing's chest. He let out a cry of agony, his body flying back like a kite with its string cut, crashing hard to the ground.
"Poof!" Li Muqing spat out a mouthful of blood, convulsing a few times before becoming completely motionless.
The arena fell into dead silence, everyone stunned by the scene before them. A mere woodcutter had subdued the proud disciple of Kongtong Sect, Li Muqing, with a single strike in front of all.
Bai Yunzi and several elders were also dumbfounded. They looked at the fallen Li Muqing and then at Meng Hao, who stood proudly with the Heavenly Axe in hand, their eyes filled with shock and disbelief.
"What... what kind of power is this?" one elder murmured to himself, as if he had seen a ghost.
Bai Yunzi took a deep breath, gazing at Meng Hao with complex emotions flickering in his eyes. He understood that from this day forward, Kongtong Sect and even the entire martial world would change because of this woodcutter.
Meng Hao retracted the Heavenly Axe, feeling that its power seemed to have increased even further. He looked down at the fallen Li Muqing, his eyes devoid of any pity.
