Mo Wen frowned, feeling uneasy about the strange pit before him. The treasure he had imagined did not appear, and he considered another possibility: perhaps there was no treasure at all, but rather a Great Terror. The earlier commotion might have been caused by this Great Terror, and if he ventured too close now, he could very well meet his end at its hands.
Cold Ice City was near Yun Cang Mountain, the most mysterious place in the area, rumored to be home to the Great Terror. No one had ever seen what the Great Terror looked like; they only knew that when it appeared, the earth shook and dark clouds gathered. The aura it left behind instilled a deep sense of fear. At that moment, Wang Chi felt a striking resemblance to the legendary Great Terror, his face displaying terror as he began to run up the mountain. He needed to leave this place immediately to avoid being discovered by the Great Terror.
Reaching the mountaintop, he reluctantly glanced back at the pit below. Not only had he lost track of He Er Gou, but he had also encountered the Great Terror. His brow furrowed again. "Could it be that the Great Terror didn't notice me?" If it were still around, it should have sensed his presence by now. Yet, only when he looked at that pit did his heart race with unease. Could it be that the Great Terror was in the pit? Curiosity about the legendary creature surged within Wang Chi. He decided to assess the situation; perhaps there would be unexpected gains. With that thought in mind, he found a large rock and hid behind it, waiting for any movement from below. Leaning against the stone, a wave of intense drowsiness washed over him.
"Wang Chi! Wang Chi! Wake up!" He opened his eyes to see Long Xiao Wu's face, who was still panting heavily.
"Ah! How did I fall asleep?" Wang Chi jumped up and looked down at the pit. The unsettling aura that had gripped him earlier had vanished. "Ugh!" He slapped his forehead hard and sighed deeply, feeling utterly dejected.
"Wang Chi, what happened?" Seeing Wang Chi's expression, Long Xiao Wu stepped closer. He had followed Wang Chi's footprints to this spot and found him sleeping behind the rock. Initially thinking Wang Chi was resting for him, it seemed now that he had overthought things. Wang Chi stood there dazed and pointed downwards. Following his gesture, Long Xiao Wu saw the scene below: under the moonlight lay a large pit in the desolate ground, surrounded by charred trees. The pit itself resembled a dark bowl with burn marks along its walls from extreme heat.
"Wang Chi! There seems to be something at the bottom of the pit!" Long Xiao Wu exclaimed excitedly. Startled by his shout, Wang Chi quickly rushed down towards the pit.
"What is that? It looks like a living thing!" Standing at the edge of the pit, they gazed into its depths where a dark object lay on the ground, seemingly still breathing. Even without Long Xiao Wu's words, Wang Chi noticed it too; however, he was still immersed in regret—if only he hadn't fallen asleep, they wouldn't be in this situation.
"Let's go! We need to check it out." Resolute now, Wang Chi decided they had to see what lay below despite their failed pursuit. He figured it would be safer for Long Xiao Wu to go down first; if there was danger, he would still have a chance to escape. The smooth black walls of the pit formed a curve with no protrusions for climbing. After circling around its edge, he drove a wooden stake into the ground and tied it with Beast Muscle Rope.
"Wang Chi! It's a person!" Long Xiao Wu finally recognized what lay on the ground—a man's body—though it was completely blackened and unrecognizable.
