Should I go to the appointment?
This is a society filled with danger. Anyone with a sense of self-preservation, especially girls, would never easily go to a stranger's home alone.
Yet, after an entire day, my mind was in chaos. The narrative from Huo Xingjing on the phone kept echoing in my head, the scene of the murder replayed vividly—the image of X swinging an axe at A Man's head—and all the trivial matters that had happened before intertwined without any order, suffocating me.
By evening, I finally made up my mind: I would visit V's home; I needed to meet V. If I didn't express the experiences of these past days, if I didn't vent my inner fears and anxieties, I would eventually go insane.
V was a stranger, someone with no intersection in my life; it would be perfect to confide in him.
So I arrived at V's place and met him.
Before this, I had imagined what V would look like, but the reality of V was completely different from my expectations.
V was a young man around twenty years old, about 1.75 meters tall, with messy hair and vacant eyes. Although his features were quite handsome, his wooden expression, strange movements, and disheveled appearance made him seem incredibly odd.
In V's room, we sat facing each other.
We sat there in silence, neither of us speaking; the atmosphere was extremely awkward.
Suddenly, V scratched his head and pulled out a transparent plastic bag from his pocket filled with various soft candies. He casually grabbed a few and exaggeratedly chewed them.
I glanced at him. He asked, "Do you want to eat?"
I waved my hand, "Thank you, but I’m not hungry."
He responded with an "Oh," and then said flatly, "Tell me about the murder case you experienced that night. Don’t leave out any details."
I nodded, took a deep breath, and began to recount, "My name is Zhang Minyin, and I am a department head at a cosmetics company. A few nights ago, after I had just finished dinner, I received a text message from our company's Executive Director—let's refer to him as A Man for now..." Half an hour later, I had shared everything that happened before the police arrived that night with V.
After listening, he seemed unresponsive, staring blankly at the floor.
So I continued, "When the police arrived, they unlocked the company’s front door and opened it. Since A Man’s body was lying nearby, they were cautious while opening the door, afraid of disturbing the crime scene.
"B Man, C Girl, and I informed the police that the suspect X had entered the Executive Director's office and had not come out since. All three of us could confirm that X was still in the office at that moment. Because of our statements, the officers became alert, holding their guns as they cautiously approached the office.
"However, the gunfight we imagined never occurred. Although X was indeed in that office, there was no resistance. In fact, X could not resist because he was already dead—he had hanged himself.
"Yes, when the police kicked open the door to the Executive Director's office, they found X hanging inside, dressed in a raincoat and wearing a mask. It turned out that after killing A Man, X had entered the office to commit suicide.
"When they removed X's mask, it revealed a man in his early thirties! Later investigations revealed that our Executive Director A Man had taken X's girlfriend away from him. Heartbroken over losing his girlfriend and filled with extreme hatred towards A Man—this was likely X's motive for murder.
"Additionally, there was a trail of bloody footprints from the glass front door of the company to the Executive Director's office and beneath X's feet. The police deduced that after killing A Man and spilling his blood everywhere, when X discarded the axe and walked toward the office, his shoes picked up A Man’s blood, leaving behind those bloody footprints. Forensic analysis confirmed that the footprints matched X's shoes and that the blood belonged to A Man.
"At this point in the investigation, this brutal murder case was essentially solved. After killing A Man to relieve his own resentment, X likely realized his girlfriend had moved on and felt there was no way to escape legal consequences for his actions. In despair, he ended his own life, thus closing the chapter on this murder case."
I sighed deeply after I finished speaking and turned to V, asking, "What are your thoughts?"
