Wei Fan sneered, "Then keep your daughter away from me in the future and mind your own business!"
"You!" Old Jin's chest heaved with anger. "My daughter married into your family; she is one of yours now. How can you treat her like this? Don't you have a shred of conscience?"
"Conscience?" Wei Fan laughed heartily. "I’m barely hanging on to my life; what do I need conscience for?"
Old Jin was not one to back down easily. "Regardless, pushing my daughter into the water is wrong, and you need to give me an explanation!"
"An explanation?" Wei Fan narrowed his eyes. "What kind of explanation do you want?"
"You need to apologize to my daughter and promise not to bully her again!" Old Jin demanded.
"You old fool, you want an apology?" Wei Fan seemed to hear the biggest joke in the world. "Go die somewhere else! If you don’t leave, I’ll deal with you too."
As he spoke, he stepped forward and reached out to push Old Jin.
Though Old Jin was older, her stubbornness showed as she grabbed Wei Fan's arm. "Do you really think I'm easy to bully?"
"Let go of me, old hag!" Wei Fan forcefully shook his arm.
The two began to struggle. Old Jin, being older, couldn't match Wei Fan's strength. She was thrown off balance and stumbled before falling to the ground.
"Ouch!" Old Jin fell hard, scraping her arm and bruising her knee.
"You... you hit an old person; this is against all reason!"
"Reason?" Wei Fan laughed loudly. "Where is the reason? I’m sick and broke; has reason ever cared about me?"
At that moment, neighbors heard the commotion and gathered around.
Seeing Old Jin’s bruised face, they couldn’t help but point and whisper among themselves.
"Wei Fan, how can you hit an old person?" someone muttered quietly.
"What does it have to do with you?" Wei Fan glared at the crowd. "Anyone who talks too much will get dealt with too!"
The villagers were intimidated by his ferocity and dared not speak further.
Old Jin looked at the people around her. "You all saw it; this man hit an old person! You need to testify for me!"
But the villagers all lowered their heads, afraid to respond. They feared retaliation from Wei Fan.
Old Jin said angrily, "Fine! You all don't care, right? I'm going to call the police!"
"Go ahead!" Wei Fan replied nonchalantly, "Let's see what the police can do to me!"
Old Jin limped out of Wei Fan's house, unable to comprehend that there could be such unreasonable people in the world.
In the afternoon, officers from the Aoxi Police Station arrived. Upon seeing Old Jin's injuries, they immediately took her to the hospital for examination, which cost over a thousand yuan.
The police found Wei Fan and sternly stated, "You injured the old lady; this is a criminal offense."
"I didn't hit her; she fell by herself," Wei Fan stubbornly denied.
"There are witnesses at the scene. Do you still want to deny it?" The officer frowned. "According to mediation procedures, you need to compensate the old lady 650 yuan for medical expenses."
"650 yuan?" Wei Fan jumped up, "Why should I pay her anything?"
"Because you injured her!" The officer patiently explained, "This is the minimum compensation standard."
"I have no money!" Wei Fan plopped down onto a chair, "I'm sick myself; how can I afford to pay her?"
The officer looked at the man with a face full of flesh and felt helpless. After mediating for a long time, Wei Fan refused to budge and was unwilling to pay even a single cent.
