The villagers soon spotted Wei Fan not far away. He was sitting on a stone by the roadside, holding a bloodied machete in his hands.
“Wei Fan! What have you done?” Old Wang asked, trembling.
Wei Fan looked up at the villagers, and no one dared to approach him.
“I did what I had to do,” Wei Fan said calmly.
“You're insane! You’ve really lost it!” a villager shouted.
“Yes, I’m insane,” Wei Fan stood up. “But I’m not the only one who’s lost it; this world has gone mad!”
“Call the police! Call the police!” someone yelled.
“Will that help?” Wei Fan laughed. “What will the police do? Can they cure my illness? Can they bring the dead back to life?”
The villagers were terrified by his madness and no one dared to come closer.
“Brother… why…” Mu Fan finally spoke, his voice hoarse like a broken wind instrument.
“Because I can’t go on living,” he said calmly. “Since I can’t live, then no one else should expect to live well either.”
With that, he turned and walked back, and no one dared to stop him.
Wei Fan slowly made his way back to Mu Fan’s house along the path he had come from.
After the madness, reason began to return. Looking at the bloody scene before him, a complex mix of emotions surged within Wei Fan.
Was there regret? A little.
Was there relief? Also a little.
But more than anything, there was a deep despair.
He walked into the house and sat down on a chair stained with blood.
These people were all his family. Juhua was his sister-in-law, and Xiaoming and Xiao Lan were his niece and nephew. They had never truly harmed him; at most, they had only said a few things he didn’t want to hear.
Yet he had killed them.
“I’ve really gone mad…” he said with a bitter smile. “Completely mad…”
The pain had tormented him for two years, twisting his character beyond recognition.
He felt as if the whole world was against him. Tonight, Old Jin's anger had completely ignited the hatred burning within him. But now, everything was over. He had killed someone, and there was no turning back.
In the distance, the sounds of cars and voices could be heard; someone must have called the police. Soon, the officers would arrive to arrest him. And then what? A death sentence? His liver disease and stomach issues had already tortured him to the brink of despair; even if he wasn't sentenced to death, he wouldn't live for many more years.
"Since that's the case, why make them go through the trouble?" He stood up and walked toward the kitchen. In the corner of the kitchen was a bottle of pesticide.
"This will do." He opened the cap.
"This... will end it all..." He tossed aside the empty bottle and staggered back to the living room.
The poison took effect quickly. He felt intense abdominal pain, ten times worse than his usual stomach troubles. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead, and breathing became difficult. He collapsed onto the floor, curling up into a ball.
"Mom..." In his final moments, he thought of his deceased mother. "Mom, I'm coming to find you..."
Ten minutes later, Wei Fan's breath completely ceased.
An hour later, a call to emergency services was made. The Le'an County Public Security Bureau received a report of a murder in Shangling Village.
At 1:30 AM, the police arrived at the scene. They found five bodies: Juhua, Xiaoming, Xiao Lan, Old Jin, and the murderer Wei Fan.
The bloody night finally came to an end, but the scars left behind would never heal.
Mu Fan knelt on the ground, weeping over his wife's corpse. He had lost the most important person in his life, and the murderer was his own brother. The overwhelming grief and guilt drove Mu Fan into madness.
