I huddled with my old partner in the stairwell, trying to warm ourselves by a broken gas stove. We had put on every piece of clothing we could find, yet we still shivered uncontrollably.
"Old man, I feel like I can't hold on much longer," my partner said, their lips turning purple.
"Just hang in there a little longer. Tomorrow I'll go find Xiao Qiang and see if he can think of something," I replied.
At that moment, voices drifted up from the floor above. I recognized my son Hou Zuo Qing's voice immediately.
"Old Wang, you should come over tomorrow to look at the house; we've already agreed on the price."
Old Wang? Who was this Old Wang? I listened closely and realized it was Manager Wang from the real estate agency! My heart leaped into my throat.
"Xiao Hou, are you really going to sell it? This place has a good location; it will appreciate in value," Manager Wang said.
"Appreciate? I need the money urgently. Two hundred thousand, not a penny less; the transfer will happen tomorrow," Hou Zuo Qing replied.
"But this is a relocation house. What about your parents...?"
"My parents?" Hou Zuo Qing scoffed. "What do they matter? The property deed is in my name; I can sell it if I want!"
"I heard they're living in the stairwell below..."
"Why should I care if they live in a stairwell? I didn't force them to stay there."
"And if you sell the house, where will you move?"
"I've already found a place; there's a cheap apartment in the south of the city."
My heart shattered as I listened. It turned out my son planned to sell the house! My house—the one I had bought with a lifetime of savings—he wanted to sell to someone else!
I quietly crawled up to hear better.
"Xiao Hou, can you really do this? How can you live with yourself? That's your own father!" Manager Wang seemed unable to hold back his disapproval.
"Biological father? He can't just live in my house for free! Besides, they can live wherever they want; it has nothing to do with me."
"Aren't you afraid people will say you're unfilial?"
"Let them say it; it won't put food on my table. I'm short on cash right now, and selling the house will solve my problems."
"When will the contract be signed?"
"Tomorrow! Bring the buyer, and we'll transfer ownership and get paid on the spot."
"Alright, it's settled then."
Footsteps echoed as Manager Wang prepared to leave.
I quickly retreated into the stairwell, my mind in turmoil.
"What's wrong, old man? You look terrible," my partner asked with concern.
I told her everything I had just heard.
After listening, tears streamed down her face. "That scoundrel! He's trying to drive us to our doom!"
"I can't let him succeed!" I gritted my teeth.
I knew that if the house was sold, I would never have a chance to reclaim what belonged to me.
"But what can we do? The property deed is in his hands; legally, the house is his."
"Legally it's his, but morally it's mine! I refuse to believe there isn't a place in this world where reason prevails!"
I pondered all night and finally came up with a plan.
The next morning, I went to find Director Liu at the community office.
"Director Liu, I want to report that my son is trying to cheat me out of my house!"
"Master Hou, what's going on?"
I explained everything that had happened to Director Liu.
After listening, he frowned. "So you're saying your son wants to sell the house?"
"Yes! The transfer is supposed to happen this afternoon!"
"If this house was allocated to you during relocation, then your son's private sale could be considered fraud."
"What do you mean?"
"Please wait a moment, I'll contact the relocation office right away to check the records from that year."
