"Li Xuemei!" I chased after her, but she didn't look back as she hurried down the stairs.
I stood in the hallway, watching her drag her suitcase away into the night. In that moment, my world completely shattered. My wife had left, for money, for a so-called dignified life, to prevent our daughter from "suffering" alongside me. After more than a decade of marriage, it had all come to an end.
I returned to the empty house and sat on the sofa in a daze. The wall still displayed a family photo of the three of us; how happy we had been then. Now, everything was gone.
I picked up my phone, wanting to call Li Xuemei, but her number had already been blocked.
Three days after Li Xuemei left, I mustered the courage to call her family. The phone rang for a long time before it connected; it was my mother-in-law's voice.
"How dare you call?" my mother-in-law's voice was sharp and piercing. "My daughter must have really hit rock bottom to be with you!"
"Mom, I want to see our daughter..."
"See what? With your current state, how embarrassing would it be for her to see you?"
My mother-in-law was relentless. "You deliver takeout; what face do you have to meet your child?"
"I am her father!"
"Do you even deserve to be called a father?" my mother-in-law's voice grew louder. "A man who can't even support his family has no right to be a dad! Let me tell you, don't bother us again!"
The call ended abruptly. I held my phone, my hands trembling. Even seeing my daughter had become an unattainable wish.
Two days later, Zhi Qiang surprisingly came to my house. He parked his Benz downstairs and walked up in a casual suit.
"Bro, I heard that your wife went back to her family?" Zhi Qiang sat on my worn-out sofa, looking around with an indescribable expression in his eyes.
"Yeah." I didn't want to say much.
"Don't be too upset, man. Everyone goes through tough times," Zhi Qiang said as he patted my shoulder. "I'm here to help you."
"What are you busy with?"
"I'm in need of an accountant at my construction site. Brother, you have a good education, so you'll definitely be capable."
Zhi Qiang smiled and added, "Although the pay isn't high, it's eight thousand a month, but it's much better than delivering takeout."
Eight thousand, and I would still have to watch his face. I felt a mix of emotions inside.
"How about it? Brother, just consider it as a temporary measure." Zhi Qiang continued to persuade me. "Once you're stable, you can think about other options."
I looked at him—this cousin who used to quietly eat in the corner was now speaking to me from a position of superiority.
"I'll think about it," I replied reluctantly.
"Alright then, just give me a call when you've made up your mind."
Zhi Qiang stood up. "By the way, if you have any difficulties, feel free to let me know. We're brothers after all."
I forced a smile as he left.
After Zhi Qiang walked away, the more I thought about it, the angrier I became. Why did he feel entitled to look down on me? Why did everyone else regard me with disdain?
I opened the family group chat and saw that everyone was still discussing investment matters.
I couldn't hold back any longer and began typing:
"Dear uncles and aunts, I want to say a few words. I know everyone thinks I'm not doing well and that studying is useless. But I want to say that I, Lin Zhiyuan, have never harmed anyone, nor have I ever stolen or robbed; I earn my living with my own hands! What's wrong with delivering takeout? At least I'm not begging anyone! At least I have a clear conscience!"
After sending the message, there was silence in the group for a few minutes.
Then Zhi Qiang replied: "Brother, what you're saying isn't right. Who said you've harmed anyone? Everyone cares about you."
