"You what?" Lin Xiaofan didn't give her a chance to speak. "Do you think that putting on makeup can hide your black heart? A green tea bitch like you wouldn't even be acknowledged by a dog in our place! You act all superior while being someone else's lapdog? If your parents knew they raised something like you, they'd probably pack up and run with the ancestral grave overnight!"
Liu Rushuang trembled with rage at the barrage of insults, her meticulously manicured nails digging into her palm. "Lin Xiaofan! You're asking for death—"
Suddenly, she pulled out a poisoned hairpin from her updo and lunged at him. Huo Qubing reacted swiftly, using his spear to knock the hairpin away. With a thud, the poisoned pin embedded itself deep into a pillar.
"There's an assassin!" Huo Qubing leaped out of the window, chasing after a shadow that darted into the darkness.
Taking advantage of the moment, Lin Xiaofan pressed Liu Rushuang down onto the table. "Stop struggling. Your master has sent someone to silence you, and you're still here pledging loyalty?"
Liu Rushuang fought back, "You're talking nonsense! His Highness would never—"
"Never what?" Lin Xiaofan sneered, pulling out the poisoned needle lodged in the pillar. After scanning it with the system, he thrust it in front of her. "Look for yourself! What poison is on this needle?!"
[Detected compound toxin: Belladonna + Deadly Nightshade +......]
[The toxin is of the same origin as that which afflicted the princess.]
[Guaranteed death within twelve hours after poisoning.]
Liu Rushuang's face turned as pale as paper. "Impossible... The Crown Prince wouldn't..."
Lin Xiaofan released his grip, allowing Liu Rushuang to slump to the ground. Her exquisite makeup was now smeared from tears, her eyes vacant like those of a walking corpse.
"It seems even his own woman isn't safe from him," Lin Xiaofan crouched down, his tone surprisingly gentle. "After serving him for so long, all you got in return was a poisoned needle?"
Liu Rushuang suddenly let out a piercing laugh and ripped open her sleeve. "Do you think I did this willingly?!"
Her snow-white arms were marred with grotesque scars—whip marks, branding burns, and most shocking of all, a deep knife wound across her wrist.
"This is..." Lin Xiaofan's pupils constricted.
"The Crown Prince did this himself," Liu Rushuang said with a bitter smile. "Every time I failed him, I received another scar. He said this way I'd remember my lessons..."
Lin Xiaofan fell silent for a moment before softly asking, "Is it worth it to serve him like this?"
Those words acted like a key, clicking open Liu Rushuang's tightly shut heart. She suddenly broke down in tears, curling up like a lost child.
"I... I can help you," Lin Xiaofan offered her a handkerchief. "But you need to tell me everything you know."
Wiping her tears away, Liu Rushuang unsteadily stood up and walked over to the vanity. She retrieved a ledger from a hidden compartment. "This is the real ledger of the Crown Prince's control over the grain transport; it lists all the officials he has bribed."
As soon as Lin Xiaofan took the ledger, a warning suddenly popped up from the system:
[Detected that the pages of the ledger are soaked in delayed-action poison!]
"Damn it!" Lin Xiaofan quickly wrapped the account book in his clothes. "There's poison on this too!"
Liu Rushuang was momentarily stunned by his words, but then she unexpectedly burst into laughter. "What a thorough extermination..."
She staggered toward the door, but suddenly coughed up a mouthful of black blood at the threshold and collapsed straight down!
