Li Yan's expression froze completely after my words fell.
He lowered his head, staring intently at the cigarette butt, his pupils constricting violently.
Du Rong's smile also froze at the corners of her mouth, pale as a sheet of paper.
She opened her mouth as if to say something, but no words came out.
"What's wrong, Officer Li? The fingerprints on the cigarette butt are quite clear, aren't they?"
I laughed contemptuously; my voice was not loud, but it struck like a hammer against Gao Chen and Zhao Yuan's hearts.
They had thought I was out of tricks, but little did they know this was just the real beginning.
Li Yan suddenly raised his head, his gaze sharp like a poisoned blade, piercing straight at me.
"Wang Zheng, stop putting on a show here!"
His voice was hoarse, trembling with a hint of impending collapse.
Yet his hand instinctively tightened around the cigarette butt, as if it held some earth-shattering secret.
"Putting on a show?"
I scoffed and leisurely pulled out a few torn photographs from my pocket.
The photos were blurry images of Li Yan and Gao Chen conducting a transaction in a dark corner.
I casually tossed them onto the table, the fragments scattering like shattered lies.
"Officer Li, take a look at these. Don't they look familiar?"
The patrons in the restaurant were instantly drawn to the photos on the table.
A few sharp-eyed diners gasped in surprise.
Though the images were unclear, the figures of Li Yan and Gao Chen were unmistakably recognizable.
Li Yan's face turned ashen, veins bulging on his forehead.
He slammed his hand on the table, producing a deafening sound.
"Nonsense! These are all edited!"
His voice was laced with a desperate hysteria.
However, I didn't give him a chance to argue.
I gently placed an old tape recorder on the table.
I pressed the play button, and after a crackling sound of static, a deep male voice began to resonate.
It was the voice of Li Yan, filled with suppressed greed, clearly audible in conversation with Gao Chen.
"...That batch of goods, I told you, can only go through this route..."
"...As long as the money is in place, anything can be discussed..."
"...Don't forget, Wang Zheng still has some use..."
The content of the recording struck like thunder, exploding in the ears of Gao Chen, Zhao Yuan, and Du Rong.
The restaurant instantly fell into a dead silence, everyone holding their breath.
Shock, fear, and disbelief were written on each face.
Gao Chen's body trembled violently as he instinctively glanced at Li Yan.
Li Yan's eyes were fixed on the recorder, his body rigid as if nailed to the spot.
Cold sweat dripped down his forehead, sliding across his contorted face.
"It’s impossible... this can’t be happening..."
He murmured to himself, his voice weak and filled with a sense of desperate helplessness.
Zhao Yuan's face turned pale; she covered her mouth tightly, afraid to make even the slightest sound.
Her eyes darted back and forth in terror between Li Yan and Gao Chen.
Du Rong trembled all over, her petite body curled up as if she might faint at any moment.
"Officer Li, Mr. Gao, do you have anything to say now?"
I looked at them coldly, a lit Chinese cigarette dangling from my lips, my gaze exuding a wild defiance.
Li Yan's lips quivered as he tried to say something, but no words came out.
He attempted to pick up the cigarette butt on the table, only to find his hand shaking uncontrollably.
Gao Chen's eyes flickered as he quietly reached into his pocket, trying to grab his phone.
However, just as his fingers brushed against it, he discovered that the phone was firmly stuck to the inside of his pocket with transparent tape.
His face turned pale instantly as he shot his gaze back at me.
My eyes held a hint of mockery as they met his.
"Mr. Gao, it seems your phone isn't very cooperative," I said casually, sending a chill down Gao Chen's spine.
It dawned on him then that I had been prepared all along.
The recording and the few photos were merely bait to lure the snake out of its hole.
The real trap had long been buried in his every move.
"You... you crazy man!"
Gao Chen's face twisted in rage as he shouted.
His hand gripped the pocket tightly, trying to pull out his phone.
But the tape was stuck unusually firmly.
At that moment, Zhao Yuan suddenly let out a piercing scream.
"You all can die!"
Her eyes were bloodshot, and her face was contorted with fury.
She abruptly grabbed a handgun from the table, aiming it directly at Li Yan and Gao Chen.
The gun gleamed under the light, appearing especially glaring in the dimly lit restaurant.
Chaos erupted in the restaurant as diners screamed in terror and fled in all directions.
Tables and chairs were overturned, dishes shattered, creating a cacophony of noise.
Du Rong's face turned pale with fright as she let out a short, startled cry.
In that chaotic moment, I discreetly pulled a small chip from my pocket.
It lay quietly in my palm, emanating a cold, faint glow.
The data on the chip had already been sent out through my pre-set program before the chaos erupted.
I watched Zhao Yuan's nearly frantic actions, a barely perceptible smile curling at the corners of my mouth.
Her loss of control was part of my plan.
Screams, the sound of shattering glass, and people's cries intertwined to create a chaotic symphony.
The restaurant had completely turned into a hellish battleground.
Li Yan and Gao Chen's faces were etched with despair.
Their masks had finally shattered at this moment.
