"They're over there."
Mu Mu tugged at my arm, hiding behind a pillar in the banquet hall.
Chen Jiayi, dressed in a Chanel haute couture gown, exuded the elegance of a century-old family with every gesture.
"Will you honor me with the next dance, Mr. Zhou?"
Chen Jiayi slightly lifted her head, inviting Zhou Shaojun to join her on the dance floor.
"It would be my honor." I noticed Zhou Shaojun's expression brighten.
Zhou Shaojun graciously pulled out a chair for Chen Jiayi.
His movements were gentle, his gaze focused.
That gentleness was something I had never experienced.
That focus had never been directed at me.
Mu Mu tightened her grip on my hand.
"Hang in there, don't let them see."
As the waltz began to play, Zhou Shaojun wrapped his arms around Chen Jiayi and glided into the dance floor.
They twirled, drawing close, their actions intimate and oblivious to the world around them.
Whispers circulated among the crowd.
"I heard Zhou Shaojun is going to collaborate with the Chen family?"
"Yes, the Zhou family has finally found a way to rise up."
Each mocking word felt like a needle piercing my ears.
My chest tightened, and I struggled to breathe.
"Come on, stop looking," Mu Mu urged, pulling me toward the terrace.
The cold wind brushed against me, bringing a bit of clarity.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my emotions.
"Actually, everyone in the industry knows that Zhou Shaojun has been trying to get close to the Chen Family," Mu Mu handed me a tissue.
"Although their family is wealthy, they are still far from the status of the Chen Family's century-old jewelry brand."
I glanced toward the banquet hall, filled with socialites laughing and chatting.
I felt like an outsider, completely out of place.
The wealth of my family meant nothing in their eyes.
The history of the Chen Family was the real bargaining chip.
I took another deep breath.
"Mu Mu, I want to go abroad."
"I want to use the startup funds from my family to learn how to create my own brand."
"Really?" Mu Mu looked at me in surprise.
"Yes, but don't tell anyone just yet."
"Of course, he doesn't deserve you." Mu Mu hugged me.
"After marriage, you will be the brand ambassador."
Zhou Shaojun once envisioned our future this way.
"The resources of the Xu Family can inject new vitality into the Zhou family's brand."
Looking back now, I realize I was merely a resource in his eyes.
"Is this your design draft from university?" Mu Mu flipped through my portfolio.
"Wow, why would you hide such talent?"
"Because I thought that was love," I said with a bitter smile.
Mu Mu helped me search for information and contacted a business school in the United States to apply for a luxury management program.
In addition to organizing application materials, I also needed to prepare visa documents.
"I'll invest in you!" Mu Mu declared, slapping the table decisively.
"Those rich second-generation kids mocked me for being a parvenu back then; now we’ll show them!"
"Thank you, Mu Mu."
"I'm so glad to have you."
After Mu Mu left, I sat on the bed, reminiscing about the expectations Zhou family elders had for me.
"Ke Ke has great temperament; she would be perfect as an ambassador."
"After the marriage alliance, your father's project can be launched quickly."
What they are always after is the money of the Xu Family.
"Dad, Mom, I have something to tell you." I entered my parents' room.
"What is so serious?" my father put down his newspaper.
"Zhou Shaojun is using our family’s marriage alliance to elevate his own family's status."
"I heard him say that I am just a stepping stone."
"Hmph! How dare he..." my father slammed his hand on the table.
"Dad, I want to start a business in America." I held my father's hand tightly.
"I refuse to be anyone's stepping stone."
"Don't give a single cent to that Zhou family's project," my mother said firmly.
That night, I continued to gather information and plan my own brand.
"Timeless."
