In July 2001, the summer in Beijing was particularly sweltering. Liu Ya, six months pregnant, sat in a luxurious suite at a hotel in the outskirts of the city, gazing out at the bustling traffic, her heart feeling like ice.
This suite, costing 12,000 yuan a month, had been reserved by her husband, Wu Jun, specifically for her. As he put it, "Pregnant women need rest the most; you don't need to worry about work." It sounded considerate, but Liu Ya knew all too well that this was a form of house arrest.
She thought it was just a fleeting whim of her husband's. After all, since returning from Canada, Wu Jun had been unusually attentive. He brought her various supplements every day and even hired a nanny to take care of her needs.
"This child is hard to come by; you must take good care of yourself," Wu Jun said, gently touching her belly with a tenderness she had never seen before.
However, Liu Ya soon noticed something was off. First was the cash in their home safe. That was the "emergency fund" they had saved over the years—over two million yuan—was gone.
"I took the money to the bank; it's not safe at home," Wu Jun explained nonchalantly.
Then there were her jewelry pieces. Those were her "private savings" accumulated over the years and worth quite a bit.
"It's better to keep them in the safe to avoid theft," he said.
Even the property deed for their house in Jinan had been taken by Wu Jun.
"I have a friend who invests in stocks with great returns. I used the house as collateral and invested seven million," he stated as if it were perfectly reasonable. "It's still our house; it's just a different way to make money."
Liu Ya wanted to protest, but Wu Jun's words left her speechless: "With your current condition, what can you worry about? Isn't it better to focus on your pregnancy?"
Then something even more chilling happened. One afternoon, while sorting through things, Liu Ya accidentally discovered Wu Jun's phone. A message on the screen caught her eye: "Are you coming tonight? I miss you." The sender was a woman with an unfamiliar name.
Liu Ya opened the message thread, and its contents nearly made her faint:
"Last night was truly wonderful."
"Once I handle things at home, we can be together."
"The woman is pregnant; she shouldn't suspect anything."
The timestamp of the last text message was from last night. Last night, Wu Jun had told her he was going to meet a client and would be home late. Liu Ya recalled Wu Jun's hurried excuse to return to the country and his various unusual behaviors during this time. All the clues pointed to a cruel truth: her husband not only betrayed her but was systematically transferring their joint assets.
When Wu Jun returned home that evening, Liu Ya had already regained her composure.
"What client did you meet today?" she asked casually.
"Oh, just a boss in the import-export trade, quite capable," Wu Jun replied without missing a beat.
"How did it go?"
"Pretty well, we're preparing to collaborate on a project."
Liu Ya nodded, choosing not to say anything further. She understood that questioning him at this moment was pointless.
That night, as Liu Ya lay in bed, watching the man beside her sleep peacefully, an unprecedented hatred surged within her. This man had once been her first love, her husband, and her partner in business. They had built their enterprise together and amassed millions in wealth. But now, at the moment she needed him most, he had betrayed her.
What was even more terrifying was that he intended to kick her aside while taking all their assets and flying off with another woman.
"You think I will just sit back and do nothing?" Liu Ya sneered inwardly. "Since you have no mercy, don't blame me for being heartless."
