The heavy rain pounded against my helmet like hail.
I twisted the throttle of my electric scooter and sped toward the next address—Jinxiu Villa District.
Five minutes late; this delivery would be a waste, and I’d lose money.
In the back seat of the Delivery Box, besides the overpriced Seafood Congee, there was a stiff brown paper package.
The customer had left a message: “Make sure to deliver it personally to Mr. Zhang. Don’t open it; the reward is doubled.”
Curiosity gnawed at me like ants.
While waiting for the red light, I impulsively pulled back a corner of the paper package.
A cold, dark metallic sheen pierced my vision.
A handgun!
Sweat instantly soaked my back, colder than the rain.
Should I deliver it or call the police?
Delivering it could get me involved in something deadly.
But calling the police? How could I explain why this was in my box?
Fingerprints? Surveillance? Jumping into the Yellow River wouldn't clear my name!
The green light was on, and the horn behind me blared insistently.
My heart felt like it was about to leap out of my throat.
Stay calm!
I took a deep breath, the rain mixed with the scent of rust filling my lungs.
My fingers trembled as I shoved the gun back into the paper bag, wrapping it up just as it was.
The lid of the Seafood Congee had softened from the rain.
A wild thought flashed through my mind.
I tore open the congee lid, scalding broth splattering onto the back of my hand.
Ignoring the pain, I pressed the entire brown paper bag into the thick congee!
I covered it up and pressed down firmly.
Perfect, the gun was submerged in the congee; from the outside, it just looked like a spilled meal.
At least for now, I was safe.
The phone rang, and it was the client, a cold female voice asking, "Where are you?"
"I'm... I'm almost there! The rain is too heavy!" I stammered.
"Ten minutes. If you don't deliver, you know the consequences." The call ended abruptly.
Consequences? She certainly knew what was inside!
I pressed the accelerator all the way down, and the electric bike surged through the flooded streets.
The security booth at Jinxiu Villa was lit up.
I lowered my hat brim and announced my arrival, "Building 18, Area A, delivering food."
The guard scrutinized my soaked clothes and the crooked delivery box with suspicion.
"Register," he said, sliding a notebook toward me.
I scribbled a name hastily, smudging the ink with my fingerprint.
The electric gate slowly opened.
It resembled a mouth ready to swallow someone whole.
Building 18 was brightly lit, and a Black SUV was parked at the entrance.
The car window was tinted dark, resembling the eyes of a monster.
As soon as the vehicle came to a stop, the door of the villa opened.
Two men in black suits emerged, their builds robust and their gazes sharp.
It wasn't Mr. Zhang.
"Where's the stuff?" one of them approached me directly, his voice low and menacing.
He reached out to lift the lid of my Delivery Box!
Cold sweat instantly broke out on my forehead.
"The porridge... it might have spilled a bit..." I instinctively pressed down on the box lid.
The man in black gripped my wrist like a vice!
A sharp pain shot through me.
"Let go!" the other man barked at his companion, but his gaze was even colder. "Mr. Zhang is waiting inside. Hand over the box."
Without waiting for a response, he snatched the box away from me.
My heart stopped.
He weighed the box in his hands, seemingly uncertain about its weight.
His gaze sliced through the air like a knife, cutting across my pale face.
With his other hand, he slowly reached for the latch on the box's lid...
This is it! I’m going to be discovered!
Just then!
"Woo—woo—"
The shrill sound of a police siren grew louder, piercing through the rain!
The red and blue lights flashed wildly against the villa's exterior and the faces of the men in black.
The expressions of the two men shifted dramatically!
The man holding the box froze, his eyes flickering with suspicion and menace.
"Damn it! Why are the cops here?" The man gripping my wrist cursed under his breath, suddenly releasing me.
They exchanged a glance, and without hesitation!
They abandoned the Delivery Box and turned to sprint toward the Black SUV.
The engine roared as the off-road vehicle sped like an arrow across the lawn, racing towards the back path.
I collapsed onto the ground, mud soaking through my pants, my body cold and shivering.
A police car came to a halt at the entrance of the villa, and several officers quickly exited, warily surrounding the area.
One officer's sharp gaze swept over the scene before finally landing on me and the muddy Delivery Box at my feet.
"Who are you? What happened here?" he demanded sternly.
I opened my mouth, but my throat was too dry to produce any sound.
The officer's gaze shifted to the Delivery Box lying quietly on the ground.
The lid had been jarred open during the earlier chaos, revealing a crack.
Thick Seafood Congee slowly seeped out from the gap.
Within the congee, a corner of cold, dark metal faintly glimmered.
