“‘Viper’?!” Captain Chen sprang up from his chair, his face turning paler than the walls of the interrogation room.
The young officer nodded vigorously, his voice trembling with barely contained fear. “Yes! The fingerprint characteristics match perfectly! It’s him!”
The air in the interrogation room seemed to freeze, heavy and suffocating.
I slumped in my chair, feeling icy all over.
“Viper… that legendary demon who kills without blinking, responsible for a massacre… one of the men in black is actually him?!”
The gun I had given him could very well be the murder weapon used to kill Mr. Zhang!
And I had unwittingly become the unlucky fool who delivered the weapon right to him!
A wave of terror coiled around my heart like a cold snake, tightening its grip.
Captain Chen took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down, but the shock and seriousness in his eyes remained unchanged.
He turned to me, his gaze sharp as a knife. “You just said you remembered a pattern on the wrist of that man in black who grabbed the box? A green snake?”
I nodded desperately, as if grasping at a lifeline. “Yes! He rolled up his sleeve a bit, revealing the inside of his wrist. It looked like… like a green snake coiled around! The color was very dark, almost like a tattoo!”
“A coiled green snake…” Captain Chen repeated softly, his eyes sharp as an eagle’s. “The signature tattoo of ‘Viper’ is a dark green venomous snake coiled on the inner side of his left wrist! It seems it’s really him!”
This confirmation sent me plummeting into an icy abyss.
Just then, Captain Chen’s phone vibrated urgently.
He glanced at the caller ID, his brow furrowing even deeper before he quickly answered. “Speak!”
The voice on the other end was frantic; even without speakerphone, I could vaguely hear several words: “… safe house… breached… warning…”
Captain Chen’s expression darkened ominously.
“Understood, I’ll be there right away!” He hung up and looked at me with a complex expression. “Wang Lei, your troubles are bigger than you imagined! ‘Viper’ has left us a ‘message’!”
Captain Chen didn’t explain what the “message” was immediately but signaled to the young officer. “Keep an eye on him! No one is to approach without my orders!” With that, he dashed out of the interrogation room like a gust of wind.
I found myself staring blankly at the young police officer, both of us caught in a moment of uncertainty.
Fear and confusion twisted my nerves like two hands kneading dough.
About half an hour later, Captain Chen returned, bringing with him a chill from outside, his expression even more grim.
He waved the young officer out, leaving just the two of us in the interrogation room.
"Wang Lei," he said as he sat down, his voice hoarse and weary, "you've been wondering why the police car showed up so 'timely' near Jinxiu Villa Block 18, right?"
I looked up sharply; this was one of my biggest questions!
"It wasn't a coincidence," Captain Chen stated bluntly. "We received an anonymous tip just five minutes before you arrived at the villa."
An anonymous tip?
"The informant claimed that a large illegal transaction was taking place at Jinxiu Villa Block 18, involving 'dangerous items.' The parties involved might be armed and very dangerous," Captain Chen fixed his gaze on me. "The informant provided a very specific license plate number—exactly that of the Black SUV!"
I was taken aback.
Who was it? Who could know such details?
That woman? Or… a cohort of Viper? Internal strife?
"Our nearest patrol car rushed over immediately, intending to set up surveillance first," Captain Chen's eyes were sharp. "But as soon as we reached the entrance, we heard what sounded like a struggle inside the villa, followed by that SUV barreling out, along with you… and that suspicious Delivery Box."
So that was it!
It was that anonymous tip that brought the police here!
It seemed to have saved my life (preventing me from being silenced by those in black), yet it had directly landed me in the police station, embroiled in an even deeper whirlpool!
"Can we trace the source of that tip?" I asked urgently.
Captain Chen shook his head slowly. "Encrypted network call; it's untraceable. The voice was also processed, making it unrecognizable."
A ghostly informant!
"What you just mentioned about the 'message'...?" My voice trembled, a sense of foreboding creeping in.
Captain Chen's gaze instantly turned icy and piercing.
"We found signs of a break-in at a temporary safe house used to protect key witnesses," he said, his voice low and filled with suppressed anger. "No valuables were taken. But..."
He paused, seemingly weighing his words, before finally pulling out his phone and displaying a photo, turning the screen towards me.
Just one glance made my stomach churn!
The photo showed an ordinary living room coffee table.
But on the table lay a brutally disemboweled dead mouse!
The mouse's bloody entrails were pulled out and arranged into a twisted pattern—like a coiled snake!
Next to it, in crooked letters written with mouse blood, was one word:
"Mouth."
A chill shot from my feet straight to the top of my head!
"This... this is..." I was too frightened to speak coherently.
"A warning from Viper," Captain Chen's voice was as cold as ice. "He is telling us, and you—"
"Keep your mouth shut, or you'll end up like this mouse."
A blatant death threat!
It was aimed directly at me, the only witness!
"How... how does he know about the safe house? How does he know about the police..." My teeth were chattering.
"That's precisely the most terrifying part!" Captain Chen slammed his fist on the table, producing a dull thud. "This safe house was set up temporarily, and very few people knew about it! The fact that Viper could find it so quickly and break in with such precision means what?"
He stared at me, speaking each word slowly and deliberately:
“There may be eyes on him within the police department!”
This news sent a chill down my spine, even more than the threat from “Viper” itself!
Is there no safety even within the police?
Who can protect me now?
Everything I confess here could reach “Viper” at any moment!
Despair washed over me once again.
Who is the anonymous informant? Who is the mole for “Viper”? What has Mr. Zhang gotten himself into? Who can I trust?
Captain Chen took back his phone, his expression grave to the extreme.
“Wang Lei, you are now a thorn in ‘Viper’s side, and your situation is extremely dangerous. At the same time, there may also be a risk of leaks within the department.” He spoke quickly, with determination. “We can’t stay here any longer.”
He grabbed the intercom on the table: “Old Wu, prepare the vehicle! Execute the ‘Eagle's Nest’ plan! Immediately!”
Soon, the door to the interrogation room opened.
Two completely unfamiliar police officers entered, their expressions serious and movements efficient.
“Captain Chen!”
“Take him away! Level One alert!” Captain Chen commanded. “Ensure absolute safety!”
The two officers grabbed me, one on each side, and without further ado, they placed a black hood over my head!
Suddenly, everything went dark!
“Where are you taking me?” I asked in terror from beneath the hood.
No one answered.
I was half-dragged away, quickly leaving the interrogation room and passing through the corridor, seemingly entering an underground parking garage.
I was shoved into a car, and the engine roared to life.
The vehicle sped away in silence.
An unknown fear consumed me.
I lost track of time until the car finally came to a stop.
The hood was yanked off my head!
The blinding light made me squint.
As I looked around, I realized I was in what appeared to be the upper level of an abandoned warehouse.
It was empty and cold.
The two police officers who brought me stood guard at the only entrance, their faces expressionless.
In the center of the warehouse stood a figure with his back to me, dressed in plain clothes.
That person slowly turned around.
The moment I saw his face, it felt like a thunderbolt struck me, leaving me completely frozen in place!
That face bore a striking resemblance to the deceased Mr. Zhang—Zhang Guodong!
