She took out three silver needles and pierced them into several acupoints on her body. As the needles entered, a strange chill emanated from the points, spreading throughout the room.
On the windowsill, a nightingale had unknowingly perched there. The moment it was touched by the cold air, it froze suddenly and then fell silently from the ledge, lifeless. Nangong Shuang glanced at it, a flicker of sorrow crossing her eyes. This was her constitution; when the Cold Poison flared up, even nearby living beings would be affected. This was also one of the reasons she had refrained from getting too close to others over the years.
"It needs to be completely controlled..." She gritted her teeth in pain and took out a special acupuncture chart from her medicine box, a secret technique left to her by her master—The Hanling Reverse Needle.
Following the chart, Nangong Shuang took out seven more silver needles and inserted them into specific acupoints on her body one by one. With each needle that pierced through, a wave of cold air escaped, coalescing into visible white mist.
After a moment, the Cold Poison was finally brought under temporary control. Nangong Shuang leaned weakly against the headboard; her face remained pale as paper, but her lips were as red as if stained with blood. She took out a bronze mirror and saw her eyes flickering with an unnatural blue light, resembling two cold stars.
"My master said that the Cold Poison Physique is rare in a millennium. If I can practice the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique, not only can I control the Cold Poison, but I can also transform poison into strength..." Nangong Shuang murmured to herself. "No wonder even the Crown Prince's faction covets this book so much."
After putting away the medicine box and silver needles, Nangong Shuang's thoughts returned to the dream she had. The figure in black holding a long knife, the emblem on his jade pendant—exactly like what Zheng Yushi wore today at the Execution Ground!
"It really is him..." Nangong Shuang clenched her fists tightly, cold light flashing in her eyes. "Zheng Yushi, you are one of the murderers who slaughtered my Nangong Family! For ten years of blood feud, I will make you pay in blood!"
Just as she was filled with rage, a rustling sound suddenly came from outside the window. Nangong Shuang raised her head alertly and saw a shadow flash past on the window frame.
"Someone has intruded!" She quickly got up, grasping a silver needle in her hand, and silently approached the window.
Another faint sound followed, as if someone was moving around in the courtyard. Nangong Shuang cautiously pushed open the window and saw two figures in black sneaking toward the main house.
"Are they coming for the Sixth Prince? Or..." Nangong Shuang pondered and decided to follow them to find out.
She nimbly climbed out of the window and landed silently on the ground, moving through the shadows like a night owl. Years of martial arts training and a life on the run had honed her skills to perfection.
The figures in black seemed very familiar with the layout of the courtyard, skillfully avoiding patrolling guards as they headed straight for a side hall behind the main house. Nangong Shuang followed closely behind, suspicion brewing in her heart.
In front of the side hall door, they stopped; one of them took out a key from his pocket and gently unlocked it.
"Strange, there’s actually an insider in the Sixth Prince's residence?" Nangong Shuang hid behind a nearby rockery and squinted to observe.
Once inside, they quickly closed the door. After hesitating for a moment, Nangong Shuang decided to investigate further. She quietly approached and found a small window on the side of the hall that allowed her to peek inside.
The candlelight within was dim; she saw two black-clad figures searching for something. One of them lifted up a floorboard revealing a hidden compartment and pulled out an ornate box.
"We found it!" one of them whispered excitedly as he opened the box to reveal a jade pendant that bore an uncanny resemblance to the Plum Blossom Mark on Nangong Shuang's wrist!
"The Plum Blossom Token!" A shock ran through Nangong Shuang; this was precisely the key to unlock Mei Ying Villa's secret chamber!
"We have what our master wanted; let's hurry," one of them said quietly.
"Wait," said another in a lowered voice. "There’s still one more piece; Sixth Prince said there are two halves—both are essential."
