Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment before nodding, "That makes sense. My father mentioned in his letter that the jade pendant and the Plum Blossom Mark can unlock the secret chamber of our ancestral home. We should search for it."
The three of them meticulously examined every inch of the basement walls, looking for any potential mechanisms. Finally, on one wall, Nangong Shuang discovered a recess that perfectly matched the shape of the jade pendant.
She inserted the pendant into the recess while pressing her left wrist's Plum Blossom Mark against a nearby circular imprint. The wall slowly shifted, revealing a more concealed secret chamber.
They cautiously entered. This chamber was much smaller than the basement, containing only a stone table and a stone chair. On the table rested a brocade box, which was likely where the will was hidden.
As Nangong Shuang approached the stone table to retrieve the box, she suddenly halted, turning back with alertness. "Someone's coming!"
Indeed, footsteps and voices echoed from outside. The pursuers had found the entrance to the secret chamber!
"Quick, hide!" Xiao Zhongyan whispered urgently, pulling Nangong Shuang behind a stone pillar.
Lu Ming took cover in the shadows on the opposite side, holding his breath and focusing intently.
Before long, a commotion erupted outside as several men in black entered. The leader among them was none other than the Third Envoy from Shadow Pavilion!
"Search! We must find the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique and the will!" he commanded sharply.
The men in black rummaged through the outer chamber and quickly discovered the opened wooden box and scattered letters.
"My lord, the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique is missing!" one of the black-clad men reported.
The Third Envoy fumed, "It must be that wretched Nangong who took it first! Search every corner!"
The black-clad men intensified their search and soon uncovered the mechanism leading to the inner chamber.
"My lord, there's another secret chamber here!"
"Open it!"
The three heard the commotion and realized danger was imminent. Nangong Shuang quickly took the brocade box and hid it in her bosom before exchanging a glance with Xiao Zhongyan.
The door to the inner chamber slowly opened as a group of black-clad men streamed in.
"There's someone here!" one of them shouted upon discovering their hiding place.
"Run!" Xiao Zhongyan shouted fiercely, drawing his sword to block their path. "You go first; I'll hold them off!"
Nangong Shuang couldn't bear to leave him behind. "No, we leave together!"
"Listen to me!" Xiao Zhongyan insisted firmly. "Taking the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique and the will is more important than anything else!"
Nangong Shuang gritted her teeth, knowing he was right. She and Lu Ming dashed toward the outer chamber but found it already guarded by several men in black.
"I'll take care of them!" Lu Ming exclaimed as he drew a short sword. "You find a chance to escape!"
With that, he charged toward the men in black like a whirlwind, his short sword flashing with cold light as he swiftly took down two enemies.
Nangong Shuang was not to be outdone; she pulled out silver needles from her sleeve and accurately shot them at the pressure points of several black-clad men. In an instant, multiple foes collapsed to the ground.
However, the enemies were numerous, and Lu Ming soon found himself overwhelmed. He was quickly injured and forced back against the wall.
Seeing this, Nangong Shuang realized that fighting head-on was not a viable option. She quickly took out her last pouch of Zui Hun San and scattered its contents into the air. A colorless and odorless powder immediately filled the atmosphere.
The black-clad men were caught off guard, swaying unsteadily as they fell into confusion.
"Let's go!" Nangong Shuang urged as she pulled the injured Lu Ming toward the exit.
As they made their way, she remembered that Xiao Zhongyan was still in the inner chamber holding the rear and hesitated for a moment.
"Don't look back!" Lu Ming gritted his teeth. "He's from the Xiao Family; he has his own way to escape. You have an important mission; you can't take risks!"
Nangong Shuang felt reluctant but knew that Lu Ming was right. Gritting her teeth, she led Lu Ming out of the secret chamber in search of a way to leave the manor.
Just as they burst out of the main building, they found the courtyard filled with black-clad men blocking their path. At the forefront stood a burly figure with sharp eyes—none other than Yang Zhe Shou, the leader of the Mountain Bandits who had escaped that day!
