"I will be careful," Nangong Shuang nodded and asked, "So, how should I handle the meeting with the physician tomorrow?"
"Feigning illness and not attending is the safest option, but it might raise more suspicion," Qing Zhu pondered. "I suggest you go, but take this beforehand."
She handed Nangong Shuang a black pill. "This is the 'Hun Yuan Dan,' which can temporarily alter your physical characteristics, making it difficult for even the imperial physician to detect. The effect lasts for two hours, which should be enough for you to handle the physician's examination."
Nangong Shuang took the pill and thanked her. Qing Zhu then provided some additional precautions and finally warned, "Remember, the Qian Mansion is intricate; everyone has their own stance and purpose. The only person you can truly trust is yourself."
With that, she turned and melted into the night, her figure quickly disappearing.
Nangong Shuang stood still, her mind racing. Qing Zhu's appearance and warning made her realize she was in a far more dangerous environment than she had imagined. The Qian Mansion, the Xiao Family, the Shadow Pavilion, the Feng Yu Pavilion—various forces were secretly vying for power, and she was at the center of it all.
"I must be more cautious," Nangong Shuang murmured to herself as she tightened her grip on the pill. "I will navigate tomorrow's trap safely."
The moonlight poured down like water onto her pale face, casting a layer of resolute light over her determination. No matter how many obstacles lay ahead, she would overcome them one by one to seek justice for the Nangong Family and uncover the truth!
Despite Qing Zhu's warning echoing in her ears, Nangong Shuang had no choice but to proceed as planned to meet with the physician. Qian De's intentions were all too clear—this was a test of her identity.
At dawn, Nangong Shuang rose early and took the Hun Yuan Dan given by Qing Zhu. The pill melted in her mouth, and a warm current coursed through her body, completely masking the coldness that had been lingering within her. To her surprise, she found that her body temperature had normalized significantly, and the Plum Blossom Mark on her wrist was less pronounced.
"It really works," Nangong Shuang thought with relief as she adjusted her clothing and headed towards the physician's residence.
The physician at Qian Mansion was named Xu Lao, an elderly man with white hair and beard who was said to have served in the Imperial Medical Institute and possessed exceptional medical skills. As soon as Nangong Shuang arrived at the door, she saw Qian De waiting for her.
"You’re here?" Qian De said sternly. "Xu Lao is highly skilled; make sure to learn well from him."
Nangong Shuang bowed respectfully. "Thank you for your guidance, Chief Steward."
Xu Lao sat in an inner room surrounded by various herbs and medical books. Upon seeing Nangong Shuang enter, he smiled warmly as he scrutinized her. "So this is the new maid of Second Miss? She certainly has an extraordinary presence."
Qian De introduced her from beside him. "Xu Lao, this girl is said to have some knowledge of medicine; Master instructed that she learn from you."
"Oh? Knowledgeable in medicine?" Xu Lao's interest was piqued. "Tell me what you have learned."
Nangong Shuang humbly replied, "I grew up in a medical clinic and learned some basics from my master; I recognize some common herbs and can prepare simple prescriptions—nothing worth mentioning."
"Is that so?" Xu Lao looked at her meaningfully. "Let me check your pulse first to see what your foundation is like."
Nangong Shuang's heart skipped a beat; she knew this was the beginning of a test. She calmly extended her wrist while secretly circulating her internal energy to maximize the effect of Hun Yuan Dan.
Xu Lao's fingers gently rested on her pulse as he closed his eyes to feel it. After a moment, he frowned slightly. "Your pulse shows some abnormalities; it seems you've caught a chill."
Nangong Shuang's heart raced, but she maintained a calm exterior. "You have keen insight, Xu Lao. Last night I kicked off my blanket in my sleep and caught a chill; I did feel somewhat unwell upon waking this morning."
“Oh?” Elder Xu pondered for a moment and said, “Let me feel it more carefully.”
His fingers pressed down on Nangong Shuang’s pulse once again, this time with greater pressure, probing more meticulously. Nangong Shuang understood that he was testing for any traces of Cold Poison lurking within her, and she secretly tensed her nerves, exerting all her effort to control her internal breath.
