She decided to take the initiative and search for clues. Under the pretense of preparing medicine, Nangong Shuang wandered around the Guo Residence, secretly observing every corner. In a secluded spot in the backyard, she discovered several maidservants whispering to each other, one of whom was Xing Er from the previous night.
Nangong Shuang hid behind a rockery, carefully listening to their conversation.
"The plan failed; that girl is too cautious and didn't touch the refreshments at all," Xing Er said in a low voice. "The master will be unhappy."
Another maid whispered back, "Don't worry; the master has a new plan. I heard that Lord Guo will host a banquet today to thank that girl, and there will be plenty of opportunities then."
"But her medical skills are indeed remarkable; even the people from the Imperial Medical Institute couldn't diagnose the Purple Butterfly Poison, yet she recognized it at a glance," said a third maid with concern.
Xing Er scoffed, "So what? No matter how skilled she is, she can't escape the master's grasp. Don't forget why we are here."
The maids exchanged a few more hushed words before dispersing. Nangong Shuang remained hidden, contemplating the information she had just overheard. Clearly, these maidservants were spies planted in the Guo Residence, and they knew about the Purple Butterfly Poison, making it highly likely that they were involved in the poisoning.
"Who could the master be?" Nangong Shuang wondered to herself. "The Xiao Family or Shadow Pavilion? Or someone else entirely?"
While she was deep in thought, distant footsteps and voices approached. Nangong Shuang looked up to see a dignified middle-aged man striding forward, surrounded by a group of attendants—this must be Lord Guo. He was tall and serious-looking, dressed in official robes with an imposing demeanor.
Nangong Shuang quickly stepped aside to avoid being seen. Lord Guo walked straight toward the inner courtyard, presumably to visit his daughter. Once he was out of sight, she made her way back along a small path.
As soon as she entered the inner courtyard, she heard Guo Chunyi's laughter coming from within the room, indicating that she had already regained some spirit. Nangong Shuang entered to find Lord Guo sitting by the bed, looking affectionately at his daughter while Madam Guo smiled warmly at them both.
"Father, this is Sister Shuang who saved me," Guo Chunyi exclaimed excitedly, pointing at Nangong Shuang. "Her medical skills are incredible—better than those from the Imperial Medical Institute!"
Upon hearing this, Lord Guo turned his gaze toward Nangong Shuang, his eyes sharp as if trying to see through her. Nangong Shuang respectfully bowed and said, "Nangong Shuang pays her respects to Lord Guo."
"So this is Nangong Shuang," Lord Guo remarked as he scrutinized her from head to toe. "Young yet so skilled in medicine—truly rare. I am Guo Dian, currently serving as Censor Zhongceng. I thank you for saving my beloved daughter’s life."
Nangong Shuang humbly replied, "Your Excellency is too kind; I merely did what little I could; it is nothing worth mentioning."
"You are too modest," Lord Guo said seriously. "If it weren't for your timely diagnosis of the Purple Butterfly Poison, my daughter would have faced dire consequences. This kindness is something I will never forget."
He turned to Madam Guo: "Madam, have you prepared a generous gift to express our gratitude to Nangong Shuang?"
Madam Guo nodded: "It has already been prepared; we were just waiting for you to return so we could present it together."
"Good," Lord Guo replied with satisfaction before addressing Nangong Shuang again. "Your medical skills are exceptional; would you be willing to stay at the Guo Residence as our guest? I assure you that you will be well treated."
Nangong Shuang felt a stir of interest; staying at the Guo Residence would indeed allow her access to more information about court affairs and greatly aid her investigation into the truth behind the annihilation of the Nangong Family. However, she also understood that this could be a dangerous choice, especially with unknown spies lurking within.
"Thank you for your generous offer," Nangong Shuang politely declined. "However, I am already serving at Qian Mansion and cannot make such decisions on my own. I will wait for Madam Qian's return and consult them first."
Lord Guo nodded slightly: "That is acceptable. Tonight I will host a banquet in your honor and invite Mr. and Mrs. Qian as well; we can discuss this matter further then."
