Nangong Shuang thanked Lord Guo, who then gave a few more instructions regarding Guo Chunyi's care before leaving to handle official business.
In the afternoon, Nangong Shuang prepared the last dose of medicine for Guo Chunyi. Just as she finished and was about to take it to the bedroom, she saw Xing Er rushing towards her.
"Nangong Shuang, the lady requests you to come immediately!" Xing Er said anxiously. "Miss is having another episode, and it's worse than before!"
Nangong Shuang's heart sank, but she did not act immediately. Instead, she calmly asked, "The medicine is ready; I'll take it over right away."
"There's no time!" Xing Er urged. "Miss is already foaming at the mouth, and the lady is crying in panic. Please hurry!"
Nangong Shuang placed the medicine bowl on the table without showing any emotion and followed Xing Er out of the kitchen quickly. However, instead of heading directly to Guo Chunyi's bedroom, she took a detour through another corridor to approach quietly.
Peering through the window, she saw Guo Chunyi lying peacefully in bed while Madam Guo sat beside her reading a book, completely unaware of the urgent situation described by Xing Er.
Understanding what was happening, Nangong Shuang turned and swiftly returned to the kitchen. Just as she reached the door, she noticed a young maid stealthily sprinkling some powder into the medicine bowl before quickly leaving.
Nangong Shuang let out a cold laugh and quietly followed her. She saw the maid meet up with Xing Er, and they exchanged a few hushed words, both wearing smug expressions.
"It seems they plan to poison the medicine and frame me," Nangong Shuang thought to herself. "I must find an opportunity to expose them."
Returning to the kitchen, she discarded the poisoned medicine and brewed a new batch while secretly hiding a small porcelain vial containing the extracted poison powder from the original bowl in her sleeve.
Carrying the new medicine into Guo Chunyi's room, Nangong Shuang found Madam Guo still present and said, "The medicine is ready; please let Miss take it."
Guo Chunyi obediently drank the medicine and smiled, saying, "Sister Shuang's medicine may be bitter, but it works wonders! I feel completely recovered!"
Madam Guo smiled with relief and said, "Thanks to Nangong Shuang." She glanced outside at the sky and added, "It's getting late; I will check on the preparations for tonight's banquet. Nangong Shuang, please stay here and chat with Guan Chunyi for a while; a maid will come soon to help you get ready."
"Yes, Madam," Nangong Shuang replied respectfully.
After Madam Guo left, Guo Chunyi excitedly grabbed Nangong Shuang's hand and said, "Sister Shuang, tonight's banquet will be lively! Father has invited many officials from court; even the Sixth Prince will be coming!"
"The Sixth Prince?" Nangong Shuang's heart skipped a beat as she recalled how he had helped during the incident at Mei Ying Villa. If he appeared tonight, it could be either a blessing or a curse.
"Yes! The Sixth Prince is close with my father and often visits our residence," Guo Chunyi said innocently. "By the way, Sister Shuang, I heard you were Lady Qian's personal maid at Qian Mansion? How is that annoying Qian Ruyi doing?"
Nangong Shuang was surprised. "Miss Guo knows Miss Qian Er?"
"Of course! We used to play together all the time but had a falling out later," Guo Chunyi pouted. "She’s so full of herself and always boasts about how good Xiao Zhongyan from the Xiao Family is to her; it's infuriating."
Nangong Shuang felt a stir in her heart; it seemed that Guo Chunyi had a grudge against Qian Ruyi, who was closely related to Xiao Zhongyan. Could there be some connection here?
"Speaking of which, does Miss Guo Chunyi know Young Master Xiao from the Xiao Family?" Nangong Shuang asked tentatively.
Guo Chunyi shook her head. "Not very well; I've only seen him a few times at palace banquets. But I heard that Second Young Master Xiao Zhongmo has recently gained favor with His Majesty; many people in court are trying to win him over."
“Xiao Zhongmo?” Nangong Shuang noted the name, recalling that Xiao Zhongyan had mentioned having a younger brother, who must be this person.
As they were chatting, Xing Er entered with several maidservants, saying they were there to help Nangong Shuang get dressed and ready. Guo Chunyi urged Nangong Shuang to prepare, stating that she also needed to change into new clothes for the banquet.
