The words were spoken quite bluntly, almost explicitly. Nangong Shuang felt a jolt in her heart, but her face remained as calm as water. "You jest, my lord. The Nangong Family has long been exterminated; where would there be any riches? I am merely a lonely girl, far inferior to the daughters of prominent families."
"Perhaps," Xiao Zhongyan replied, a smile playing at the corners of his lips, his gaze deep and inscrutable. "But I can't help but feel that you bear a striking resemblance to the missing young lady of the Nangong Family."
The two locked eyes for a moment, and the atmosphere became tense. Just then, the sound of footsteps broke the silence.
"Cousin Zhongyan! So this is where you are!"
A girl dressed in a pink gown approached gracefully, her beauty evident but with an air of arrogance about her. She cast a glance at Nangong Shuang, her eyes flashing with disdain before she linked her arm with Xiao Zhongyan's. "Cousin, my aunt sent me to fetch you."
"Yuyan," Xiao Zhongyan said with a slight frown as he gently pulled his arm away from hers. "I am in conversation with Nangong Shuang; I will return shortly."
"Nangong Shuang?" Xiao Yuyan scrutinized Nangong Shuang from head to toe, her tone dripping with contempt. "Oh, she's the maid who treated Guan Chunyi. Why would you be conversing with someone like her?"
Nangong Shuang looked at this young lady from the Xiao Family and couldn't help but smirk inwardly—she must be the one who caused Guan Chunyi to fall into the water earlier. Maintaining her composure, she replied lightly, "I am merely a novice in medicine; it was just a few inquiries from my lord. If Miss Xiao has urgent matters, I shall take my leave."
"Wait." Xiao Zhongyan stopped her and turned to Xiao Yuyan, his tone slightly cold. "Yuyan, go back and tell my aunt that I will join her shortly."
Xiao Yuyan cast an unwilling glance at Nangong Shuang before leaving in a huff.
"I apologize; my cousin can be quite willful. Please do not take offense, Nangong Shuang," Xiao Zhongyan said apologetically.
Nangong Shuang shook her head slightly. "It's nothing. I just wonder why Miss Xiao seems to harbor some resentment towards Miss Guan Chunyi?"
"Well..." Xiao Zhongyan appeared somewhat awkward. "To put it simply, Yuyan has relied on me since childhood and feels jealous seeing me get along well with Guan Chunyi."
I see now. Nangong Shuang understood; Guan Chunyi had feelings for Xiao Zhongyan while Xiao Yuyan harbored affections for her cousin. In this tangled triangle, it was no wonder that animosity arose.
"Are you and Miss Guan Chunyi cousins?" Nangong Shuang feigned surprise.
"Indeed, my mother and Madam Guo are sisters," Xiao Zhongyan explained before shifting the topic. "By the way, Nangong Shuang, having just arrived in the capital, have you heard about the extermination of the Nangong Family?"
The sudden question made Nangong Shuang's heart tighten. Xiao Zhongyan's eyes held a probing light as he stared at her, seemingly trying to see through her facade.
"I have heard some rumors," she replied cautiously. "It is said they were executed for treason; it is quite unfortunate."
"Unfortunate?" Xiao Zhongyan raised an eyebrow. "Do you feel pity for the family of traitors?"
Realizing she had misspoken, Nangong Shuang quickly clarified: "I merely lament that the Nangong Family had been skilled in medicine for generations yet met such an end. If only their medical texts could have been preserved for future generations."
"You make a valid point," Xiao Zhongyan nodded, though an inexplicable emotion flickered in his eyes. "However, matters in this world are not always as they appear. Whether the Nangong Family truly committed treason remains to be verified."
Nangong Shuang felt a jolt within; what did Xiao Zhongyan mean by that? Did he have a different perspective on the extermination of the Nangong Family?
As she pondered this, a voice called out from afar: "Nangong Shuang! Miss Guan Chunyi requests your presence!"
"Forgive me, Young Master." Nangong Shuang bowed and was about to leave when she suddenly remembered something. "By the way, that jade pendant at your waist is quite exquisite. May I ask where you acquired it?"
