The surrounding pedestrians quickly avoided the scene, fearing trouble would come their way. Qian Wan'er was also startled by the commotion and pulled Nangong Shuang to take a detour.
"Miss, wait a moment," Nangong Shuang gently freed herself from Qian Wan'er's grasp, a glint of coldness flashing in her eyes.
The woman, seeing her painstakingly crafted items being destroyed, had tears in her eyes but stubbornly knelt down to pick up the scattered embroidery pieces. One of the ruffians, noticing her plight, sneered and aimed a kick at her hand.
At that critical moment, a flash of green appeared, and the ruffian's foot hung suspended in mid-air, unable to descend.
"What kind of skill is it to bully a weak woman?" Nangong Shuang had somehow appeared beside the woman, her slender fingers seemingly delicately blocking the ruffian's leg but holding him in place like a vice.
"Who are you? How dare you meddle in my affairs!" The burly man stepped forward angrily, reaching out to grab Nangong Shuang by the collar.
Nangong Shuang sidestepped effortlessly, avoiding him while revealing a silver needle that had somehow appeared in her hand. With a flick of her wrist, she lightly pricked the burly man's arm. He immediately cried out in pain as his entire arm went numb and fell limp.
"What... what did you do?" The burly man looked at his now unresponsive arm in terror.
"I merely sealed your acupoint; it will return to normal in half an hour," Nangong Shuang said calmly, her gaze as cold as ice. "If you want to keep your arm intact, take your people and leave now. Otherwise, next time I won't just seal your acupoint."
The ruffians exchanged glances, clearly not expecting to encounter someone skilled in martial arts at the lantern market. After weighing their options, the burly man gritted his teeth and said, "Today you’re lucky; I’ll settle this with you another day!" With that, he led his men away in defeat.
Nangong Shuang then knelt down to help the woman gather her scattered items.
"Thank you for your assistance," the woman said gratefully as she looked at Nangong Shuang, her voice sweet and melodious. "If it weren't for you, I would have lost everything."
"It was just a small effort," Nangong Shuang replied with a slight smile as she carefully examined the woman before her.
Though dressed simply, there was an air of intelligence and agility about the woman. Her hands were delicate and fair, with neatly trimmed nails—clearly not those of an ordinary poor girl. What caught Nangong Shuang's attention even more was that when the ruffian had aimed to step on her hand moments ago, a sharp glint had flashed in the woman's eyes—a sign of someone trained in martial arts.
"What is your name?" Nangong Shuang asked casually while helping her organize her stall.
"My name is Qiao Er," the woman replied with a sweet smile that revealed two dimples. "And what about you?"
"I am Nangong Shuang, a maidservant of Qian Mansion," she pointed to Qian Wan'er waiting not far away. "That is my young lady."
Qiao Er's eyes brightened as she followed Nangong Shuang's gesture. "Miss Qian? Is she the daughter of Dong Cheng Qian Yuanwai?"
Nangong Shuang nodded but felt a twinge of suspicion—how could this seemingly ordinary vendor know about the Qian Family?
Seeing her confusion, Qiao Er hurriedly explained, "I often set up my stall around here, and the young ladies from the mansion frequently come to buy my embroidery pieces, so I know a little about them."
Nangong Shuang did not respond but merely smiled slightly. At that moment, Qian Wan'er approached them.
"Nangong Shuang, are you alright?" Qian Wan'er asked with concern as she curiously examined Qiao Er's stall. "Oh! These embroidery pieces are exquisite."
Qiao Er was quick-witted; she picked up a pink pouch from her stall and presented it with both hands. "If the young lady likes it, please accept this as my token of gratitude."
"This... doesn't seem right," Qian Wan'er said hesitantly.
"It's not worth much, Miss, please don't disdain it," Qiao Er insisted. "If I hadn't stepped in to help, these things would have been taken by those wicked people long ago."
