After Qiao Er took her leave, Nangong Shuang fell into deep thought. Qiao Er was becoming increasingly mysterious, knowing too many secrets, possessing remarkable skills, and having some connection with the Nangong Family. Was she a friend or a foe? Was it coincidence or fate's arrangement? Nangong Shuang could not tell, but she decided to make use of this unexpected ally for the time being.
In the morning, Nangong Shuang accompanied Qian Wan'er in reading and practicing calligraphy, but her mind had already flown to Meihua Villa. Was Xiao Zhongyan's invitation sincere in wanting to reveal the truth about the Nangong Family, or was it a carefully crafted trap? If it was the former, then there might indeed be divisions within the Xiao Family; if it was the latter, how could she extricate herself safely?
While she was pondering, a voice from outside announced, "Miss Guo from Guo Residence has arrived!"
Nangong Shuang's heart tightened. Why would Guo Chunyi come unannounced? Could it be related to Xiao Zhongyan?
Before long, Guo Chunyi was ushered into the flower hall, and Nangong Shuang rose to greet her along with Qian Wan'er.
"Sister Chunyi, what brings you here?" Qian Wan'er asked warmly as she took Guo Chunyi's hand.
Guo Chunyi hesitated, glancing nervously at Nangong Shuang. "I... I would like to speak with Sister Shuang alone. Is that alright?"
Though curious, Qian Wan'er was considerate and said, "You two chat; I will go check on how the kitchen is preparing things."
Once Qian Wan'er left, Guo Chunyi grasped Nangong Shuang's hand urgently. "Sister Shuang, do you know about Cousin Xiao's invitation to meet?"
Nangong Shuang was taken aback and feigned ignorance. "What do you mean, Miss Guo Chunyi?"
"I heard my cousin say yesterday that he wanted to meet you at Meihua Villa," Guo Chunyi bit her lip, her eyes filled with concern. "Sister Shuang, please do not go!"
"Why not?" Nangong Shuang asked sharply.
Guo Chunyi looked around cautiously and lowered her voice. "Yesterday I accidentally overheard my uncle—Xiao Family Second Master—talking with someone about setting a trap at Meihua Villa to catch someone called 'Nan Gong Yu Nie.' I'm afraid... I'm afraid my cousin is in danger, and I'm worried you might get caught up in it too..."
Nan Gong Yu Nie! Nangong Shuang felt as if struck by lightning; this was indeed a trap aimed at her! Moreover, the Xiao Family's second branch was clearly colluding with the Shadow Pavilion, just as Qiao Er had said.
"Miss Guo Chunyi, why are you telling me this?" Nangong Shuang asked cautiously.
Guo Chunyi's eyes reddened slightly. "Because my cousin has always treated me well; I cannot bear to see him in danger. She did not finish her sentence, but Nangong Shuang understood. It seemed that Xiao Zhongyan truly had conflicts with the Xiao Family's second branch and might even be secretly opposing the extermination of the Nangong family. Moreover, Guo Chunyi's feelings for Xiao Zhongyan were clearly more complicated than mere cousinly affection.
"Thank you for informing me, Miss Guo Chunyi," Nangong Shuang said gratefully. "I will be careful."
"Sister Shuang must promise me not to go to Meihua Villa!" Guo Chunyi implored earnestly.
Nangong Shuang reassured her, "Don't worry; I won't act recklessly."
After sending Guo Chunyi off, Nangong Shuang returned to her courtyard feeling unsettled. On one side was Xiao Zhongyan's invitation; on the other was Guo Chunyi's warning; combined with the information provided by Qiao Er... The trip to Meihua Villa was fraught with danger.
While she was lost in thought, Qiao Er appeared silently in the courtyard. "Sister, I am ready."
Nangong Shuang turned around in surprise to find a rugged-looking woman standing before her. If it weren't for those lively eyes, she would hardly recognize this person as Qiao Er.
"What a remarkable art of disguise!" Nangong Shuang exclaimed, and immediately relayed the news brought by Guo Chunyi to Qiao Er.
Upon hearing it, Qiao Er's expression changed drastically. "There really is an ambush! Sister, you must not go!"
