Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment and made up her mind. "We will split up. Qiao Er, you create some chaos to attract the patrolling guards; little brother, keep watch on the perimeter; I will go to the woodshed to rescue Xiao Gongzi."
"Sister, it's too dangerous!" Qiao Er said anxiously.
Nangong Shuang shook her head. "I have my own methods. If all goes well, I will retreat with Xiao Gongzi through this small path; if I fail, you must not wait for me and leave immediately."
The boy and Qiao Er exchanged glances. Though worried, they understood the urgency of the situation and nodded in agreement.
After agreeing on a signal, the three of them set off in different directions. Following the route indicated by Qiao Er, Nangong Shuang stealthily infiltrated the back courtyard of the manor. The night provided her with excellent cover, and with the safe route marked by Qiao Er, she successfully avoided the patrolling guards.
The woodshed was isolated in a corner, guarded by four men in black who vigilantly watched their surroundings. Nangong Shuang hid in a nearby thicket, contemplating how to approach.
At that moment, a sudden commotion erupted from a distance, followed by urgent whistles and shouts. The four guards exchanged glances, and two of them immediately rushed toward the source of the noise, leaving two behind to continue their watch.
Qiao Er's diversionary tactic had indeed worked! Nangong Shuang felt a surge of joy and took out two silver needles from her sleeve. With a swift movement, she approached the woodshed and flicked her wrist; the needles flew silently through the air, accurately hitting the acupoints of the two remaining guards.
The two men in black felt a sudden numbness in their necks and collapsed to the ground before they could even cry out.
Nangong Shuang quickly moved forward to check the lock on the woodshed door. It was sturdy, but for someone skilled in medicine like her, it posed no challenge. She took out a silver needle as fine as a hair and gently prodded it into the keyhole; with a click, the lock opened.
Pushing open the door, a musty smell assaulted her senses. In the dim moonlight, Nangong Shuang saw a figure slumped against the wall, hands shackled with iron chains, head bowed as if unconscious.
"Xiao Gongzi?" Nangong Shuang called softly as she cautiously approached.
The person slowly lifted his head to reveal a face smeared with blood—it was Xiao Zhongyan! He looked badly injured but his eyes remained clear.
"You are... Nangong Shuang?" Xiao Zhongyan spoke laboriously, his voice hoarse. "You shouldn't have come... it's a trap..."
"I know," Nangong Shuang quickly examined his injuries and found only superficial wounds. She breathed a sigh of relief. "But I need to know the truth about the Nangong Family."
Xiao Zhongyan forced a bitter smile. "It seems my identity has been exposed... I wanted to tell you more about the Nangong Family, but I didn't expect my second uncle to find out..."
Nangong Shuang took out her silver needle and began to unlock his chains. "What identity?"
"I..." Xiao Zhongyan was about to speak when he suddenly widened his eyes. "Watch out!"
Nangong Shuang instinctively turned around just as a cold light aimed for her back! She sidestepped at the last moment, narrowly avoiding a fatal blow, but her left arm was still grazed by something sharp, blood immediately seeping out.
At the doorway stood a man in black holding a dagger, looking at her coldly. "So it’s Nan Gong Yu Nie who has walked right into my trap!"
Nangong Shuang's heart sank; she had miscalculated! It seemed that those two guards she had taken down were merely a distraction; the real expert had been lurking in the shadows all along.
"Nangong Shuang, hurry and go!" Xiao Zhongyan struggled desperately but was firmly shackled by the iron chains.
The man in black sneered. "Leave? No one is leaving today! Zheng has been looking forward to seeing both of you!"
With a flash of movement, he lunged once more at Nangong Shuang, his speed astonishing. Nangong Shuang dared not be careless; she performed several backward flips to evade the attack while simultaneously launching three silver needles from her sleeve.
