As "Miss Nangong" was mentioned, Qiao Er's eyes were fixed intently on Nangong Shuang, seemingly observing her reaction.
Nangong Shuang's heart jolted, and a sense of alertness surged within her. Wasn't "Miss Nangong" referring to her? Had Qiao Er already recognized her?
Just as she hesitated, the distant barking of dogs grew louder; the pursuers had evidently not been led too far astray.
"Sister, we need to hurry!" Qiao Er urged anxiously.
Nangong Shuang took a deep breath and decided to trust Qiao Er for the time being. "Lead the way."
The two quickly traversed through the cave and emerged onto a narrow path at the back of the mountain. The path was winding but unobstructed, clearly well-trodden by frequent users.
"This is our Jinyi Tower's secret passage; it leads directly to the outskirts of the city," Qiao Er explained. "The pursuers won't find us here."
Halfway along the route, Nangong Shuang suddenly halted, scanning her surroundings with heightened vigilance. "There’s an ambush!"
Qiao Er's expression changed dramatically. "How could that be? Only people from Jinyi Tower know about this path..."
Before she could finish her sentence, six or seven figures in black suddenly sprang from the surrounding bushes, encircling them completely!
"Nan Gong Yu Nie, you will not escape today!" the leader among the black-clad men said coldly.
Nangong Shuang swiftly drew out her silver needles, assuming a defensive stance, but confusion filled her mind—how had they found this hidden route? Could it be...
She shot a glance at Qiao Er, only to see the girl’s face pale and her eyes wide with fear and confusion. "It’s impossible! I’m the only one who knows this path!"
Seeing Qiao Er's reaction eased some of Nangong Shuang's worries. At least Qiao Er wasn't intentionally leading her into a trap, but now they were in a dire situation, surrounded by six or seven experts from Shadow Pavilion.
"Qiao Er, how many hidden weapons do you have?" Nangong Shuang asked in a low voice.
"Three flying daggers and a pouch of smoke powder," Qiao Er replied quickly.
Nangong Shuang nodded. "Follow my lead; you handle the two on the right while I take care of the rest."
"Sister, be careful! These people are elite from Shadow Pavilion!" Qiao Er warned.
The black-clad men did not give them more time to converse; with a command from their leader, all six or seven attacked simultaneously with ruthless strikes aimed at vital points.
Nangong Shuang moved like a swallow, weaving effortlessly through their ranks as silver needles flew from her hands, accurately hitting two of the black-clad men in their acupoints. The two froze in place, unable to move.
Qiao Er was not to be outdone; she hurled three flying daggers that pinned two black-clad men against trees and then threw out a pouch of smoke powder to obscure the enemies' vision.
"Run!" Nangong Shuang grabbed Qiao Er and dashed out of the encirclement amid the chaos.
The two sprinted away, quickly shaking off most of their pursuers, but still two of the most skilled black-clad men were hot on their heels.
"A stream ahead," Qiao Er said breathlessly, "we can float downstream and shake them off!"
Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement, and the two quickened their pace, soon reaching the stream's edge. The water rushed swiftly, but its width was just right to mask their scent, causing the hunting dogs to lose their trail.
"Be careful of the current!" Qiao Er reminded, leaping into the water first.
Nangong Shuang followed closely behind; the icy water pierced through them, but there was no time to dwell on it. They floated downstream, quickly putting distance between themselves and their pursuers.
After swimming for about half an hour and confirming they were safe, they finally climbed ashore to rest. It was deep into the night now, with the moon hanging high and the surroundings eerily silent.
"It seems we're safe for the moment," Nangong Shuang sighed in relief, wringing out the water from her clothes.
Qiao Er, panting from exhaustion but filled with admiration, said, "Sister, your skills are extraordinary; even the assassins from Shadow Pavilion couldn't handle you."
Nangong Shuang smiled faintly, choosing not to respond. During the earlier fight, she had noticed that Qiao Er's skills were indeed impressive; her throwing knives were particularly accurate, indicating she had received professional training. This was not quite in line with her identity as a "little girl from the Nangong Family."
