As Nangong Shuang and Qian Wan'er dismounted from the carriage, they were about to enter when Guo Chunyi hurriedly approached, grabbing Nangong Shuang's hand and whispering, "Sister Shuang, there's been a change. Not only has Xu Taiyi arrived, but Zheng Yushi is also here!"
Nangong Shuang's heart sank. Zheng Yushi! He was the presiding official of the Nangong Massacre Case and the mastermind behind the Shadow Pavilion. How could he appear at the Yao Yan in the Li residence?
"Why is Zheng Yushi here?" Nangong Shuang asked warily.
Guo Chunyi bit her lip. "I heard that Li Yingxue specifically invited him. She told Zheng Yushi that today there would be a female physician with exceptional musical skills, very much like those of the Nangong Family..."
Nangong Shuang's heart tightened; so that was it! Li Yingxue not only intended to publicly embarrass her but also harbored murderous intent, wanting to use Zheng Yushi to eliminate her!
"Sister Shuang, should we go back?" Guo Chunyi suggested anxiously.
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment and shook her head. "There's no need. Since we are here, we must make ourselves comfortable. Besides, with so many guests present, they wouldn't dare to act openly against me."
Guo Chunyi remained worried but saw that Nangong Shuang had made up her mind and did not press further.
The three of them entered the flower hall of the Li residence, where guests were already seated. Li Yingxue, dressed in an exquisite peony-red gown, was warmly attending to the distinguished guests. Upon seeing Nangong Shuang and the others enter, a flicker of cold amusement crossed her eyes, but she quickly put on a smile and approached them.
"Miss Qian, Miss Guo, you’ve come! Please take your seats," she greeted enthusiastically. When her gaze turned to Nangong Shuang, her smile took on a mocking tone. "Ah, this is quite an honor for my Li residence with Nangong Shuang in attendance."
Nangong Shuang maintained her composure and replied respectfully, "Miss Li is too kind. With the favor of the Dowager of the Duke of State, I wouldn’t dare not come."
A flash of anger crossed Li Yingxue's eyes but was quickly replaced by a smile. "The Old Lady has already arrived and is waiting for you all to take your seats. With your exceptional medical skills, I’m sure you will provide everyone with a great experience today."
Nangong Shuang smiled slightly but did not respond.
The seating had already been arranged according to status. As a servant girl, Nangong Shuang was supposed to stand behind Qian Wan'er; however, the Dowager of the Duke of State had specifically instructed for her to sit beside her.
"Nangong Shuang, come sit here," the Old Lady beckoned kindly. "I have some questions I would like to ask you."
Nangong Shuang respectfully stepped forward and sat down on a low stool beside the Old Lady.
With a gentle expression, the Old Lady quietly asked, "That piece you played yesterday, 'Mei Ying Xue Hun,' was it truly passed down by your master?"
Nangong Shuang's heart skipped a beat; it seemed that the Old Lady had some knowledge about the Nangong Family. She cautiously replied, "It was indeed passed down by my master. Why does the Old Lady ask?"
The Old Lady smiled slightly. "Because I heard this piece many years ago at a friend's house. That friend’s surname was Nan Gong and belonged to a family renowned for their medicinal fragrance."
Nangong Shuang's breath caught in her throat as her heart raced. The Old Lady truly knew about the Nangong Family!
Just as she was about to inquire further, she noticed Li Yingxue had walked to the center of the hall and announced loudly that the Yao Yan was officially beginning.
"Today we are fortunate to have Xu the Great from the Imperial Medical Academy and Zheng Yushi in attendance; I hope both esteemed gentlemen will share their insights," Li Yingxue respectfully bowed towards the two dignitaries seated at the head table.
Following her gaze, Nangong Shuang saw an elderly man with white hair sitting at one end; his serious expression and piercing gaze confirmed he was Xu Taiyi. The other man was middle-aged with a gaunt face and sinister eyes—none other than Zheng Yushi whom she had encountered years ago!
Zheng Yushi's gaze swept across the room like lightning. When it landed on Nangong Shuang, a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. Nangong Shuang's heart tightened, uncertain if he had recognized her.
Xu Taiyi stroked his beard and smiled, "I had no intention of going out today, but upon hearing that Miss Li has organized a gathering for renowned physicians to exchange medical skills, I simply could not miss it." He looked around and inquired, "May I ask which esteemed doctors are present today?"
