Three days after the incident at the Li residence, Nangong Shuang finally rid her body of the lingering effects of the Hazy Powder. On that morning, she was practicing her finger techniques in the courtyard when a young servant rushed in, holding a gilded invitation.
"Nangong Shuang, an invitation has arrived from the Minister of Revenue's residence, inviting you to a banquet today."
Nangong Shuang took the invitation and frowned slightly. The Li residence? Was it Li Yingxue again? Just when the crisis with Yao Yan had passed, why was this daughter of the Li family seeking her out again?
Upon opening the invitation, she read: "At noon today, we will host a banquet at our residence to invite distinguished physicians in the city to exchange medical knowledge. We hope that Nangong Shuang, with her exceptional medical skills, can grace us with her presence." The signature read "Li Yingxue, daughter of the Minister of Revenue."
Qiao Er stepped closer, looking worried. "Sister, that day Li Yingxue nearly caused your death. This time she invites you again; there must be a plot."
Nangong Shuang sneered. "After Yao Yan's failure, she must be unwilling to let it go. She’s setting up another scheme."
"Then you shouldn't go," Qiao Er urged.
Nangong Shuang shook her head lightly. "No, this is a good opportunity to see what tricks she has up her sleeve. Besides, if I back down now, it would only confirm my guilt."
"But sister, this is clearly a trap!" Qiao Er exclaimed anxiously.
Nangong Shuang's eyes flashed with determination. "Knowing there are tigers in the mountains, yet still heading toward them. However, we must be fully prepared this time."
After pondering for a moment, she suddenly had a glint in her eye. "Qiao Er, go prepare some things."
Nangong Shuang whispered a few instructions to Qiao Er, who looked surprised but quickly nodded and hurried away.
Just as she was about to return to her room to get ready, footsteps approached from outside the courtyard. Turning around, she was surprised to see Qian Wan'er herself coming in, also holding an invitation.
"Nangong Shuang, you received an invitation from the Li residence too?" Qian Wan'er asked with a hint of concern in her expression. "Guan Chunyi just sent word that Li Yingxue has invited many people this time for some 'medical competition,' specifically targeting you."
Nangong Shuang smiled reassuringly. "Miss Wan'er, there's no need to worry. If Miss Li wants to compete, Nangong Shuang will certainly oblige."
"But... regarding the incident with Yao Yan, I've heard from Guan Chunyi. That Li Yingxue is ruthless; this time it’s likely another trap."
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment. "Precisely because of that, Nangong Shuang must go. Otherwise, she will spread rumors that I am afraid of battle and fled; that would become a weakness against me. Rest assured, I have my own strategies."
Seeing her insistence, Qian Wan'er could only nod reluctantly. "Alright then; I'll accompany you."
"There's no need," Nangong Shuang replied firmly. When she saw Qian Wan'er’s look of astonishment, she softened her tone and explained further. "Your status is noble; if any disputes arise on-site, it might implicate you. It’s better this way: I will go alone and take Qiao Er with me."
Qian Wan'er felt reluctant and was about to persuade her further when another maid came in with news: "Miss Guo Chunyi sent someone to inform you that she has accepted the invitation from the Li residence and will be waiting for you at their entrance at noon to enter together."
Nangong Shuang felt warmth in her heart; although Guo Chunyi was a wealthy young lady herself, she was loyal and had helped her several times before. Today’s arrangement clearly indicated that she wanted to support her at the Li residence.
"In that case, please tell Miss Guo that Nangong Shuang will definitely arrive on time," Nangong Shuang said to Qian Wan'er.
Seeing this development, Qian Wan'er knew further persuasion would be futile and could only remind her: "You must be careful; if anything happens, let Qiao Er return immediately so I can send help."
Nangong Shuang nodded, and after Qian Wan'er left, she immediately returned to her room to prepare. Since Li Yingxue had made it clear that she wanted to compete with her, she could not afford to be unprepared.
She took out her medicine box and carefully checked the supplies. Although the trap set by Yao Yan from the Li residence had been perilous, it had also made her more vigilant. This time, Li Yingxue would undoubtedly be even more ruthless; it was likely that she would employ some sort of intricate poison scheme.
"The poison of the medicine... the comparison of medical skills... could it be..." A glint of insight flashed in Nangong Shuang's eyes as if she had seen through something. She quickly took out a few special herbs and placed them into a small porcelain vial, then retrieved several silver needles and hid them in her hairdo, feeling somewhat reassured.
