As she was contemplating, Qiao Er returned from outside, holding a delicate food box. "Sister, the items you requested are ready."
"Thank you for your hard work." Nangong Shuang took the food box and opened it to reveal several exquisite pastries, their colors enticing and emitting a faint fragrance. She nodded in satisfaction. "Very good, this will be enough."
After putting away the food box, Nangong Shuang continued to organize her belongings, a cold smile appearing on her face. "Li Yingxue, if you want to use poison against others, I will let you taste the bitterness of using poison against your enemies!"
Qiao Er stood by, observing Nangong Shuang's confident demeanor and couldn't help but ask, "Sister, have you already guessed what trick Li Yingxue is planning?"
"Pretty much." Nangong Shuang's gaze deepened. "Last time at Yao Yan, she tested my medical skills. This time, the so-called 'competition' must have ulterior motives. Given her ruthless nature and our previous encounter, it’s highly likely she will resort to poison."
"Poison?" Qiao Er's heart trembled. "What kind of poison?"
A glint of coldness flashed in Nangong Shuang's eyes. "The most insidious poison is that which uses others as a weapon. I suspect she will set up a trap to ensnare me."
Qiao Er looked at Nangong Shuang in surprise. "Sister, your foresight is remarkable. How should we respond?"
"When the soldiers come, we shall block them; when the water comes, we shall cover it." Nangong Shuang smiled faintly without elaborating further. She took out two small porcelain vials from her medicine box and carefully tucked them into her sleeve.
With everything prepared, the time was nearing noon. Nangong Shuang changed into a light blue dress with a simple hairstyle held up by a plain hairpin, looking both elegant and poised.
"Sister, you look especially beautiful today," Qiao Er praised sincerely.
Nangong Shuang smiled slightly. "Today is a tough battle; naturally, I must bring forth all my strength." After saying this, she glanced at the sun outside. "It's getting late; let's set off."
The two had a light breakfast before heading to the Li residence. On the way, Qiao Er couldn't help but express her concern. "Sister, that day at the Li residence during Yao Yan, I saw Xiao Zhongmo from the Xiao family. He seemed to harbor hostility towards you. If he is present today, it might cause more trouble."
Nangong Shuang nodded lightly. "Xiao Zhongmo... I noticed him last time at Yao Yan as well; his gaze was sinister and calculating, quite different from Xiao Zhongyan's temperament. It seems the Xiao brothers are indeed at odds, just as you mentioned before."
Thinking of Xiao Zhongyan made Nangong Shuang's heart stir. Only one day remained until their agreed meeting at Nangong Ancestral Home, yet she had to first deal with Li Yingxue's challenge. However, avoiding the Li residence might raise more suspicion and jeopardize tomorrow's plan.
"The Second Young Master of the Xiao family is close with Zheng Yushi; if he is present today as well, you must be even more cautious," Qiao Er reminded.
Nangong Shuang nodded again. "I am aware."
Upon reaching the entrance of the Li residence, they indeed found Guo Chunyi waiting there. Seeing Nangong Shuang approach, she hurried forward and grasped her hand tightly. "Sister Shuang! You finally made it! I was worried you wouldn't come."
Nangong Shuang smiled back. "With Miss Guo Chunyi here, how could I not come?"
Guo Chunyi's expression turned serious as she whispered, "I heard that this time Li Yingxue invited many young doctors and even several disciples of imperial physicians under direct tutelage; on the surface it's a competition of medical skills but in reality, they want to cause you trouble."
"That's fine," Nangong Shuang replied calmly. "Those with reason can travel freely across the world; those without reason cannot move an inch. If Miss Li wishes to compete openly and fairly, I shall gladly oblige; if she resorts to any schemes or tricks, I am not afraid."
Guo Chunyi was inspired by her composure and nodded in agreement. "With Sister Shuang saying this, I feel reassured. Let's go in together."
The three entered the Li residence together. Inside was already bustling with guests—much larger than during their last gathering at Yao Yan. In the center of the hall were several tables displaying various medical books and herbs, clearly prepared for the medical competition ahead.
