Li Yingxue, adorned in a luxurious brocade gown, was welcoming guests in the center of the hall. When she saw Nangong Shuang and her companions enter, a flicker of coldness crossed her eyes, but her face remained adorned with a smile as she quickly approached them.
"Nangong Shuang, you’ve arrived!" Li Yingxue exclaimed with a beaming smile. "I've heard so much about your exceptional medical skills. Today, I’ve arranged for a medical exchange and hope you can share your insights."
Nangong Shuang responded with a gentle smile and a bow. "Miss Li is too kind. I merely have a basic understanding of medicine and wouldn’t dare claim to be exceptional. It is truly an honor to engage with such esteemed medical experts today."
Upon hearing this, a hint of disdain flashed in Li Yingxue's eyes, but she discreetly took Nangong Shuang's hand. "You are too modest, Nangong Shuang. Last time at Yao Yan, Xu Taiyi praised your skills endlessly! Come, let me introduce you to some distinguished guests today."
Nangong Shuang followed suit but discreetly scanned the hall with her peripheral vision. Sure enough, she spotted Xiao Zhongmo seated in a prominent position. Dressed in a moon-white brocade robe, he had an attractive face but exuded an air of gloom as he quietly conversed with several young men nearby, occasionally casting scrutinizing glances.
Li Yingxue led Nangong Shuang to the front of the main table and introduced her to the guests. "Everyone, this is the renowned 'Divine Doctor' Nangong Shuang, whose medical skills are said to be extraordinary—so much so that even Xu Taiyi admires her."
Her words dripped with sarcasm, clearly intended to undermine. The crowd exchanged glances at Nangong Shuang, their expressions ranging from curiosity to skepticism and disdain.
A middle-aged man stroked his beard and chuckled, "So this is Nangong Shuang? Indeed, seeing is believing! At such a young age, to possess such medical skills is quite remarkable!"
Nangong Shuang recognized him as Zhou Taiyi from the Imperial Medical Institute; she had seen him at Yao Yan before. She respectfully bowed. "Thank you for your kind words, Master Zhou. I am merely fortunate to have saved a few lives; I do not deserve the title of 'Divine Doctor.'"
Zhou Taiyi smiled warmly. "Nangong Shuang is being humble. I have heard Xu Taiyi mention your 'Wu Du Jie Gan Tang'; it is indeed a marvelous remedy. I would love to learn more about it."
Just as Nangong Shuang was about to respond, Xiao Zhongmo interjected sharply: "Master Zhou, how can we take seriously the claims of a mere female doctor? She has likely only been lucky a few times and has been excessively praised."
At his words, silence fell over the hall. Nangong Shuang maintained her composure and replied calmly with a faint smile: "Young Master Xiao, that is not quite right. A healer’s heart lies in saving lives; it has nothing to do with one’s status."
Xiao Zhongmo sneered. "A healer’s heart? Ha! What a grand excuse! I have heard that some practitioners use their skills under the guise of healing while actually harming innocent people with poison. What does Nangong Shuang think of that?"
His statement was clearly accusatory, causing the guests in the hall to exchange confused glances.
Nangong Shuang felt a chill run down her spine; Xiao Zhongmo was insinuating that she used poison—did he already suspect her identity?
Before she could respond, Li Yingxue quickly intervened with a smile: "Second Young Master speaks too harshly. Nangong Shuang’s skills are undoubtedly used for healing purposes. Today we have gathered here for an exchange of medical knowledge; why dwell on unpleasant matters?"
Turning to Nangong Shuang with a friendly yet slightly provocative smile, she continued: "Nangong Shuang, shall we begin today’s theme? I have prepared several medical questions for our esteemed guests to compete against each other; would you care to give it a try?"
Nangong Shuang nodded slightly. "Miss Li, please go ahead; I am all ears."
Li Yingxue clapped her hands, and several servants promptly approached to set up a long table in the center of the hall, displaying dozens of medicinal herbs and several medical texts.
"The first question is quite simple," Li Yingxue said with a smile. "Please choose from these herbs to create a formula that can treat 'Cold Poison.'"
