Everyone's gaze turned to Nangong Shuang, waiting for her response.
Nangong Shuang smiled slightly and calmly walked forward, crouching beside the maid to pretend to take her pulse. After a moment, she stood up and said calmly, "This young lady is not truly suffering from abdominal pain."
At her words, the hall fell silent, and everyone looked at Nangong Shuang in shock.
Li Yingxue's expression changed slightly but quickly returned to normal as she sneered, "What do you mean by that, Nangong Shuang? She is clearly in excruciating pain, yet you say she is fine?"
Nangong Shuang remained unflustered. "If Miss Li does not believe me, perhaps I should prove it."
Saying this, she took a silver needle from her sleeve and aimed it at a specific acupoint on the maid's body, poised to stab down.
The maid, seeing this, showed a hint of fear in her eyes and instinctively shrank back, her expression of "abdominal pain" wavering.
Nangong Shuang let out a cold laugh. "A person truly suffering from abdominal pain would have their acupoints tense due to the discomfort. If I were to use this needle, not only would she not feel more pain, but it would actually alleviate it. This shows that she is not genuinely in pain but is merely acting!"
Upon hearing this, the maid's face changed dramatically as she looked helplessly at Li Yingxue, seemingly seeking guidance.
A flicker of anger flashed in Li Yingxue's eyes, but she maintained her composure. "Nangong Shuang, your words are erroneous. This maid is clearly in agony; how can you refuse to treat her and instead slander her as pretending? What reason do you have for this?"
Nangong Shuang remained unmoved and replied calmly, "If Miss Li does not believe me, let other physicians come and take her pulse as well. The truth will be evident."
Several physicians exchanged glances, and one elder stepped forward to examine the maid's pulse. After a moment, he spoke with an odd expression, "Indeed, as Nangong Shuang said, this young lady's pulse is stable and shows no signs of illness."
Li Yingxue's face grew increasingly grim, but she was still unwilling to concede and continued to argue, "Perhaps her condition is special and does not show in the pulse?"
Nangong Shuang shook her head calmly. "Miss Li need not argue any further. This maid is indeed pretending to have abdominal pain with the intention of creating a false impression that the pastries are poisoned to incite panic among everyone."
As she spoke, she pointed at the pastries on the table. "And the real problem lies with this plate of pastries."
The crowd erupted in confusion, unable to understand why Nangong Shuang would say such a thing.
Li Yingxue's face turned ashen as she forced herself to remain calm. "What do you mean by that? The pastries were carefully made by our family chef; there is absolutely no issue!"
Nangong Shuang laughed coldly. "Is that so? Then Miss Li should eat a few more pieces to prove it to everyone!"
With that, she picked up a piece of pastry and offered it to Li Yingxue.
Li Yingxue instinctively took a step back, panic flashing in her eyes. "I... I've already eaten; there's no need for me to eat more."
"Oh? Miss Li only took a small bite before putting it down," Nangong Shuang pressed on. "If the pastries are truly fine, why does Miss Li hesitate to eat more?"
Li Yingxue's complexion darkened further, but she still forced herself to argue back. "Nangong Shuang is slandering me! I'm simply not hungry!"
Nangong Shuang said no more but instead took out a small porcelain vial from her sleeve and poured out a bit of white powder onto the pastry. To everyone's astonishment, the surface of the pastry immediately turned a shade of blue-purple!
"This is 'Test Poison Powder'," Nangong Shuang explained calmly. "It can detect certain toxins in food. As you can see, the pastry has changed color, indicating that it indeed contains poison."
A wave of panic swept through the hall as everyone stared in horror at the discolored pastry, then glanced at the pale-faced Li Yingxue, already forming their conclusions.
A physician exclaimed, "This... this reaction is from 'Belladonna', isn't it? The pastry has been mixed with Deadly Nightshade Powder!"
"Belladonna!" another physician gasped. "That's highly toxic! A small amount can cause dizziness, while a large intake can be fatal!"
